Owner description: T&R Theakston Ltd is one of the oldest family breweries in Yorkshire and home of the legendary Old Peculier Ale. Visit this historical brewery in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales town of Masham. Experience first hand the craft and skill that goes into brewing our beers, the brewing process is built on almost two centuries of tradition, passed down through five generations of the Theakston family.2013 is a very special year as not only are we celebrating the 186th year of our company's foundation in 1827,but also ten years since we bought the brewery back from Scottish Courage and once again became a family owned independent brewery. Have a pint of our legendary beer in the Brewery Tap - The Black Bull in Paradise, names after the original inn, the Black Bull, where Robert Theakston first brewed our legendary ale and also the site where our brewery stands, once known as Paradise Fields. We always have six differnent Theakston Ales available on tap including our famous Old Peculier served from wooden casks. There is plenty to do and see including the Cooper’s shop where the cooper crafts the wooden barrels – one of the last remaining working cooperages in the country. Leave plenty of time to browse the gift shop full of ‘Peculier’ souvenirs and other Yorkshire delights.

“informative and beer heaven”
Reviewed July 25, 2013

took the brewery tour which was interesting and informative, a small brewery but generations of history. The brewing process was explained and all of our questions were answered. The tasting session at the end was well organised and great for beer lovers and included in the price of the tour(soft drinks or tea /coffee were also included for non drinkers or drivers).

We also visited the other brewery in the village in the same day (Black Sheep) and did not enjoy it at all very modern and too much emphasis put on the family rift by the guide and not the process.

“A Must for Beer Enthusiasts”
Reviewed June 27, 2013 via mobile

This is a really small but interesting place. Its really fascinating to learn about the brewing process from when the factory started to the current day. A tasting session at the end meant that you could really enjoy the produce as well. Well worth it.

“Not the best brewery tour”
Reviewed June 24, 2013

When you arrive you enter via the shop, there is a bar and around the corner as small sitting area. The tour guide was not very informative and was unable to answer my question regarding which beers were vegetarian. If you are a beer enthusiast then it will be worth a visit but otherwise compared to the Black Sheep Brewery which is just up the road this Brewery comes a poor second.

“Guided tour a must”
Reviewed June 13, 2013 via mobile

Great tour full of history and knowledge. Well worth visiting just for the tour, but the on-site pub is also a great venue. Try all the beers they have. You can get 3rds of a pint so you don't have to get messy. Unless you want to of course.
