Owner description: T&R Theakston Ltd is one of the oldest family breweries in Yorkshire and home of the legendary Old Peculier Ale. Visit this historical brewery in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales town of Masham. Experience first hand the craft and skill that goes into brewing our beers, the brewing process is built on almost two centuries of tradition, passed down through five generations of the Theakston family.2013 is a very special year as not only are we celebrating the 186th year of our company's foundation in 1827,but also ten years since we bought the brewery back from Scottish Courage and once again became a family owned independent brewery. Have a pint of our legendary beer in the Brewery Tap - The Black Bull in Paradise, names after the original inn, the Black Bull, where Robert Theakston first brewed our legendary ale and also the site where our brewery stands, once known as Paradise Fields. We always have six differnent Theakston Ales available on tap including our famous Old Peculier served from wooden casks. There is plenty to do and see including the Cooper’s shop where the cooper crafts the wooden barrels – one of the last remaining working cooperages in the country. Leave plenty of time to browse the gift shop full of ‘Peculier’ souvenirs and other Yorkshire delights.

Particularly stayed at the delightful village of Masham with a visit to Theakstons Brewery in mind, as I've been drinking this beer for years! Entrance fee of £6.50 per adult included a guided tour of just under an hour and free samples equivalent to a pint per person. A good tour by an obviously knowledgable member of staff not only able to recount the history and process of brewing Theakstons beer, but also offered and was able to answer any random questions from visitors. Enjoyed samples in 1/3rd pint glasses, 1/2, or pints (your choice). Able to buy packs and numerous Theakston gifts, most of which I thought were a tad expensive. An enjoyable visit though for 2+ hours.

Tour was just short of an hour. Guide was passionate about the company she works for or maybe she's family? Very informative and enjoyed my both males and females. The entry fee inludes a pint or 3 thirds so you can try 3 different beers. You can pay extra at the bar to have 3 more thirds and have all 6 on a board set out in low to high strength.
Try it,

Skip the tour and do the bar - It saves time! While you are in Masham visit the Black Sheep Brewery too!

We enjoyed the tour which is excellent value as it includes a pint, or the sampling of a few beers, when you finish

I would agree with the previous comment about the lady on the main desk at Theakstons not been very welcoming or friendly - however, she conducted our tour which at first I was disappointed by but actually she was extremely good as a tour guide, very knowledgable and did managed to smile and warm up a little. We visited on a Saturday when the brewery wasn't operational, I would imagine the tour is more interesting when the brewery is in full operation. I did find it much more interesting than I thought I would though, we visited more for my boyfriend as he's a beer drinker. We were given vouchers to purchase either two pints, 4 halfs or you could get the taster menu of 6 1/4 of the different beers they have on offer. When visiting the brewery park in the main square in Massham and then you have a short walk - look for the signs.
