I booked a Standard room (£70) with four-poster and Jacuzzi for a Saturday night, after seeing the very impressive website, offering 'impeccable' standards. The location could not have been better, with the Georgian building in the Market Square, and the room looking out across it. However, there were problems with the room, which was one of the Georgian-style rooms, although not the one pictured on the website. The four-poster (four posts, no drapes) has a loose post which was leaning at an angle and obviously in need of repair, and after filling the bath remnants of previous occupants floated to the surface. We drained it, rinsed it out and started again, but when the Jacuzzi was switched on pink and brown gunk (limescale?) came flying out. After that, we didn't bother trying again. I can't comment on the breakfast (£6.95 per person) as we went elsewhere, but on the plus side the room was quiet, considering it was above a pub, and warm. A review of the newer Superior rooms in the converted stable block behind the hotel has been posted under the Kings Head, Darlington, and it sounds like we would have been better off in there. I complained and we were given a 50 per cent reduction in our bill, with apologies and a promise to fush out the Jacuzzi, which I thought was very fair. Unfortunately, none of the Superior rooms were free for us to view, as I would have been willing to give them another chance (my husband disagrees). And really, when you book a break, you want the experience you expected at the price you expected - not a disappointment, even with compensation.
