“Lovely place in the heart of the Dales”
Reviewed October 10, 2013 via mobile

I travelled to Masham for a work appointment and normally would choose a hotel with a gym etc and as a lone female traveller I tend to like large soulless restaurant/bars to hide away in a corner and brouse my IPad. This time however I decided to read the reviews on trip advisor and found this gem! Not only is Masham delightful, nestled along one side of the town square is this delightful hotel. The room I stayed in was right above the bar (room 1), it was tastefully decorated, large, had a lovely comfortable bed, free wifi, large bathroom and great views across the town square. What makes this inn a great inn is the staff and the food! Everybody is so warm, you feel right at home! I had fish pie the first night and then cod and chips the second, the food is awesome! Very well presented, large portions, great price. Can't enthuse about this place enough, it's a gem, thanks for two nights I thoroughly enjoyed......and it was work!

Ive stayed here on several occasions over the years.
There seems to be a fairly new management team running the show and the service they offer is perfect for a Dales hotel- warm, friendly and unobtrusive- they really have got a grip on the place.
The rooms are of good standard with some of the olde world quirks and annoyances that you expect from a centuries old building and the food is of good quality if a little pricey. Splendid cask ales as you would expect in Masham and a cosy bar that will be lovely on a cold winters evening.
Highly recommended if you are ever out that way.

A group of 4 other couples and my husband and I have recently returned from visiting this wonderful historic hotel in Masham which is situated over looking the beautiful market square. (This was our second visit in a year and we enjoyed it so much the first time which is why we returned). This hotel is good value for money, I would recommend booking room numbers 1,2 and 3 (but be warned room three is over the bar area so if you want an early night in this room forget it) on the first floor and 7 and 8 on the third floor as these rooms as larger than the rest and they overlook the beautiful square. The bathrooms are clean and tidy and the rooms have been decorated in a modern fashion but yet sympathetic to the old beams and style of building. Our bed was comfortable but our friends in room 8 had an uncomfortable night due to a very lumpy mattress. Our other friends who stayed in room 2 had problems with the flushing of their toilet and had to use a bucket liner out of the bathroom bin to be able to flush it. Not great I hear you say but this is a very old historic building and I'm sure it is not neglect on the hotel management's part but because it is such a very old historic building. We ate in the restaurant on Saturday evening (I would recommend you book a table in advance as we have done so on both occasions we have visited as it gets rather busy). A few of our party ordered Trio of Game at £17.49 (very reasonable) the majority enjoyed it but one member of our party found his pheasant a bit tough and dry. I had a sirloin steak and asked for it to be cooked medium and it was cooked perfect but wished it could have been a little warmer. Also wished there could have been a choice of baked potato with salad instead of chips and onion rings even though they were delicious. Suggestion to hotel maybe use warmed plates to serve the food on. We also had to send a bottle of white wine back as it was warm. Overall our meal was very enjoyable and we would recommend it - these difficulties we had encountered may have been because there was 10 adults on our table to be served all at once. The Manager had explained to us that the menu had recently been changed and had been made smaller so that they were able to cook the majority of their meals from scratch - and this was an improvement from the last time we visited so well done and keep it up. We enjoyed breakfast the next morning (£7.95 I think extra) but this was wonderful, a great selection of cereals, fruit juices, yoghurts, fresh fruit salad to start, plenty of endless tea and coffee and then to follow a full english cooked breakfast which included two slices of bacon, one thick sausage, plum tomato, mushrooms and then a choice of scrambled, fried or poached egg with lashings of freshly cut bread with selection of jams, preserves and marmalades. You were able to toast your own bread if you preferred using a toasting machine which gave us endless fun on our first visit. The management and staff are all so friendly and nothing was too much trouble. There is lots to do and see in Masham, on Saturday there is a small market directly outside the hotel, lots of lovely little shops to visit and nice walk in the surrounding village and area. A must visit is Theakstons Brewery, go on a tour it's fantastic and very interesting, we went there on our first visit. This time we went to the Black Sheep Brewery and to be honest it was rubbish compared to Theakstons, it is more commercial and centered around promoting their products, we didn't find this tour as personable as Theakstons and the Black Sheep Tours was, I am afraid, get as many tours going round at any one time and they tended to clash at times. The Tour guide was so so boring that half of our party left the tour early. Saying all that the beer is fab and speaks for itself. If you want to go on a brewery tour go to Theakstons. We all would highly recommend this hotel and we will all be returning. Thank you to all the staff and management at The Kings Head Hotel for yet again making this such an enjoyable weekend for us all.

Room Tip: See my review for best rooms. Rooms on the side of main hotel are smaller and quieter. There are s...

Decided on a spontaneous whistle stop tour of the Yorkshire Dales, overnighting at Masham. A few of the reviews I'd seen on here made me hesitate a little, but we could not have had a better experience. We hadn't booked in advance, but the staff were glad to accommodate us, and we had a lovely executive room in the courtyard with the biggest bed I'd ever seen! Everything was well maintained and spotlessly clean. We ate both dinner and breakfast in the main restaurant, and everything was perfectly cooked, and the dinner reasonably priced. The staff were relaxed and helpful and seemed to genuinely care about their guests. We'll definitely stay again when we return to the area.

Had a delicious meal here tonight. The Camembert cheese, rib eye steak were amazing. Cooked perfectly, portion size really good (and coming from a farmer that's saying something!!). Had a creme brûlée for desert and it was outstanding!! (And being someone who eats lots of desert I do know!!). Full marks to everyone there. The waiting staff were very professional and friendly. 10 out of 10. Well done!!!

We are a group of male 50 something bikers. A lovely hotel. All the staff were so very friendly, a great Yorkshire (and Durham!) welcome makes you feel immediately at home. Food was great and the beers(all of them) were ace! This is the blueprint for anyone who wants a definition of a great place to eat, drink, stay and be happy. Think we will scrap the annual 12 day bike trip to the alps and come here instead: the leathers wouldn't fit after a week here though! Brilliant thanks to every single member of staff.
