“Love this place!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 25, 2013

This was our second visit to the Bay Horse. Spent 2 nights there in January 2012 and returned for 3 nights in December, with friends. Love the atmosphere here, real fires, real ale and excellent food. They offer an extensive menu with generous portions, especially breakfast!

Sharon, Ken and the staff are so friendly and welcoming, as are the locals. The dogs Tillie and Hank are real characters, especially Hank!

Masham is a beautiful village, with a real village atmosphere and two breweries. It is a great base to explore the beautiful surrounding area. Sharon gave us a route to follow up to the Tan Hill pub, highest pub in England, with lots of places to visit along the way, which is a great day out with lots of places recommended to stop off on the way, amidst wonderful scenery.

I would definitely recommend the Bay Horse as a place to stay or if just visiting Masham for the day to call in and have a drink and a meal and enjoy the atmosphere.

Thanks to Sharon, Ken and all the staff - we will be back!

Me and my Husband stayed in the Bay horse just before Christmas and we really enjoyed our stay. The atmosphere was cosy with the real fires, the food was fantastic and the staff couldnt do enough for you, they were so friendly. We cannot wait to return this year.

Just spent 2 days and nights at the Bay, and yes, it does have real beer, real fires, real food and it is a real pub with really great staff. It actually takes you back to when we had proper pubs with friendly staff serving great ales and food. Our room on the first floor was a good size with a huge comfy bed and a nice shower room.It was cosy and lovely and warm. We had a lovely meal on our first night, homemade steak pie, homemade thai fish cakes and the chips were gorgeous. After a good night sleep we were ready for a cooked breakfast before a day of walking. It was absolutely perfect. Excellent quality sausage, bacon etc ,a huge choice and presented beautifully .We chose the full engish breakfast with the best poached eggs we have had (Ken) the landlord has mastered them down to a fine art.Wish i could cook them like that !!. After a day of exercise and fresh air we returned to the pub at teatime to the lovely log fires and friendliness .That evening we opted to have the steak special ,2 perfectly cooked steaks, they were huge ,with all the trimmings and a bottle of wine for the cost of £32..We left the next morning very happy customers and we most definately will return. Thank you Sharon,Ken and your lovely friendly staff. So pleased Bay Horse is a success because you deserve it

Room Tip: Room one is where we stayed and cant fault it.

We stayed here for 2 nights for my birthday treat. It's a lovely pub, with very friendly, welcoming staff and we felt at home as soon as we were through the door. Our room was at the front, over the bar and we weren't bothered by any noise from either the bar or early morning traffic, despite sleeping with the window open.

We ate here both nights. The first night the food was superb, the second night it was distinctly average. (The pheasant was overcooked and very dry) Maybe the chefs changed?

Our problem was there was a dreadful smell in our bathroom, which apparently was due to recent flooding and sewage drainage problems. It was so bad that I couldn't bear to be in the bathroom for any length of time, so was unable to use the shower, and used the pub loo instead of our own, during the day. Apparently ours was the only room with this problem and there were no other rooms available, so we weren't able to move. We were told that a plumber would call, but when we asked what the conclusion was, we were told that instead of getting a plumber, they had put bleach down the loo! (this didn't, unsurprisingly, cure the problem!)

The owners were away; I feel maybe they would have handled the problem differently. The staff did their best, but I'm afraid it spoiled our stay immensely. On checking out, and talking to the owner, who was now back, I had hoped that maybe the £20 extra we were to pay for the bigger room (upgrade on a Groupon deal) would be waivered to compensate, but no such luck.

However, it doesn't put me off recommending this lovely, friendly pub! The staff are a credit to the place, which is popular amongst locals and visitors alike. I would go back again, but not when the floods are about!

The first room I was shown had a dirty bathroom, hair on the bed and could not walk around the bed. Second room larger but smelly bathroom, no heating and musuc till 01.00a.m. Had no choice as was already late evening and nothing else available. Breakfast not good. Went to pay bill and staff eating a fry up on the bar while I am trying to pay. Very unprofessional! Also a japping dog, which does not help.

Thank you for your review.

We found out that my 15 year old son had let his friend have a shower in the room you were shown to and being young and not thinking he had not told us, hence the dip in the bed where someone had sat.
We apologized and showed you to another room. I am sorry if there was a problem with the drain that evening - it is something that is being dealt with by the water board and happens occasionally throughout Masham.
We are very laid back in The Bay Horse - it is our home as well as our business and residents will find quite often, one of us or the staff having breakfast at the end of the bar - it is a pub - not a hotel and a very friendly one at that and as for the dogs "japping" well yes they do bark at the post man when he comes in like most dogs and when they are going for a walk - and I would not change a thing.

I am sorry the Bay Horse was not for you.

Stayed recently at this pub for a short break. We were made to feel very welcome and the breakfast was fantastic. We ate in the pub on the first night and I enjoyed the steak pie. My wife did not enjoy her meal however a refund was issued and an alternative offered which was great. The room was nice and well heated with a good shower too. Some would say the room is small from other reviews on here however we felt comfortable and slept well (our room was just above the bar). Ideally located in the centre of Masham (pronounced Mass ham) with the black sheep brewery very close too. Would recommend to all and look forward to another stay in the near future. Many thanks
