“pretentious amateurism”

the restaurant 'Au Jardin De La Mer' is attached to Hotel Les Thermes and it has a lovely garden. Since we stayed here overnight we decided to have dinner downstairs. Not a good choice after all, what a disappointing experience! We love French regional food, we even can tolerate the 'modernized' pimped up version of it by great chefs like Pierre Gagnaire or Ferran Adrià. But only if these chefs have the skills and the classic training that is needed to experiment with the classics. Otherwise, it's a joke.

This chef clearly suffers from pretensions that are not realistic, all dishes touched by him were disappointing. The main problem was the fact that every plate looked like a demented Picasso; wild colours and dips and dashes of sauces in all colours and shapes. If only the chef had added some taste and great ingredients. We had green and red paint on our hands and clothes after dining here. The only plates that were acceptable for us were those that the chef hadn't prepared. Like the plateau with local oysters and the cheese platter. All the other dishes in our 'menu gourmand' and 'menu saveurs du terroir' were a true disaster.

My partner had a big plate with a tiny portion of snails, accompanied by a sweet (!) sorbet of undefined herbs and a portion of 'wild' mushrooms that looked and tasted like chewy tofu. A weird combination and dito taste. The main dish that followed had ok beef, with almost raw vegetables. Al dente ok but these were plainly raw. The beef, surprisingly, had no taste.
My main was a huge plate with a minuscule portion of 3 coquilles St Jacques that were clearly frozen before they landed on my plate, chewy and not nice at all.

On top of all this we had a nasty confrontation with the waiter who brought us a white Bordeaux that clearly had cork upon inspection. He refused to take the bottle back and added it to our bill. After a heated discussion about this, in a crowded room, he finally agreed to subtract the bottle from our bill. But without any apology nor any other form of courtesy. So arrogant and rude! The bill was very expensive for the meal we had and after leaving the restaurant we were still hungry . Service was grumpy and not pleasant at all.

We will never come back here, nor do we advise this place to anyone.
