We visited Canelands as a stop-over from the airport in Durban, before departing the next day to the Drakensberg region. For this purpose, it was really fine but we were expecting more having had a good look at the website beforehand. Here a few positives and negatives of our stay:

*Near to the airport
Yes, the drive is only about 20 minutes from the Durban Airport and is quite easy to find
*Great breakfast
The extensive breakfast served on the outside terrace was delicious and very memorable
*Modern-style building
We liked the modern concept of the house and were able to park just in front
*Normal rooms a little small
We found our rooms to be a little on the small side (the explanation here is that they looked larger on the website)
*Somewhat run down
This was the point that hit us all: the house needs urgently a proper house maintenance staff that makes sure that cleanliness and functionality are ensured (the wooden stair banister was sticky, some of the lights were not working, opening the porch door was quite a challenge, our friends' shower was clogged and overflowed... etc.)
*Somewhat loud
On our side of the building we heard all the restaurant noise. The surf can be also quite loud.
*Pool use limited
The pool is nice but located just beyond the fully-glassed restaurant and reception area. If you do not mind being observed then this is fine, but...

All in all, Canelands fulfilled its purpose - a good stop-over from the airport - but I would hesitate to recommend it for more.

We absolutely loved our couple of days here. With stunning views over the ocean, this hotel was welcoming and beautifully designed. We loved our dinners in the restaurant - their curry of the day is a must! The food really was fantastic and the views from our room so beautiful. We enjoyed some massages in the spa and genuinely didn't want to leave

Room Tip: Book one of the honeymoon suites even if you're not on honeymoon! Well worth it for the incredible setting!

We spent 2 nights at Canelands and were pleasantly surprised. The Hotel is right on the beach, very clean and the staff very friendly. Breakfast was excellent. We couldn't get a sea view room and unfortunately had a view of the parking lot but this was not entirely bad. there is a very nice German pub and restaurant right across the road (Siggie's) with excellent food and big screen TV. The hotel lacks decent TV channels as we are sports fans but Siggi's made up for this. Highly recommended and we will be back !

Room Tip: Sea view room

A stunning 4* boutique hotel, located on the North Coast of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, a mere few feet away from the ocean.

The overall service from the staff was excellent and they were generally friendly.

The Spa service is superb, it stocks only the best of brands, including an organic range.

The room itself was beautiful and tastefully decorated. I loved the bathroom...
Loved the addition of the plush white bath robes in the room.

We loved waking up to the beautiful sun rise, the view and sounds of the ocean, and the fresh sea breeze.

I would most definitely have planned additional trips to this beautiful boutique hotel and spa. But the food was beyond disgusting. I complained to the Head chef about the food in particular a meal he prepared for us, his response was the food was fine. The pastries served at breakfast are not freshly made. In general the food lacked flavour and the menu is extremely limited. On our second night, after consuming lunch (which I had complained did not taste right both to the waiter and Head Chef) I became extremely ill.

Furthermore, hotels in general should offer halal food, by not doing so, you are limiting your clientele.

The tea/coffee/ hot chocolate bar should be replenished daily.

Another huge concern was the cleaners, even when the door is locked (whether you are inside or not), they unlock the doors and enter without permission. My poor husband awoke with a fright when a cleaner let herself into our locked room. There were other awkward moments too...

The key could not be found for the bar fridge in the room, and there was a broken lamp shade which I requested be fixed when we arrived but this was not attended to.

Besides the minor flaws/faults, I'm certain that if the food were to improve then this hotel would easily attain 5 star status.

Room Tip: Most rooms are supposedly garden facing, but there really is no garden. Rather opt for a sea facing room.

The location of this place is awesome right on the beach. It was rather empty when we were there so it did feel a little stale given that we had children with us. The staff were very polite but i did have to constantly look for them in the "office" to get served a beer. The breakfast was good however the service was very slow being that we were the only ones in the hotel we waited for up to 15 mins for a coffee. The place is next to the sea so there were areas in need of attention. It did seem apparent that as soon as a certain female was around who turned up towards our last days and asked how we enjoyed our stay the staff seemed to have a "second breath". Overall a pleasant stay i do believe this club does cater for couples rather than families.
