“What a disappointment!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 5, 2013

We stayed there for 2 nights and besides the view and the quality of the food, the stay was atrocious. Primarily because of well-known power failures that management had not made provisions for. At the price we pay for the accommodation, they could at least put in battery or generator backup for the lights. And not leave us in complete darkness. The power failed on both nights of our stay for hours on end.
There are other minor things like the air-conditioning not working or broken electrical plugs or huge cracks in walls, broken ceiling and furniture, poor waiter and bar services and poor room ventilation resulting in rooms smelling like bacon from breakfast first thing in the morning… etc… that don’t belong in such a highly priced venue.
I would not return unless it was the last option available…

Room Tip: Don't take room 6. We did not stay there, but it opened up into the dining room. We stayed in r...

We needed a 1 night stay in the Durban area before moving on and choose this place for it's sea views and "on the beach" location. We were not dissapointed, loved the views from the terrace and had a nice walk along the spotless beach just below the club. A great location if you want a beach based holiday. Our room was at the back and not particularly special, dissapointed that the air con was not working, luckily it was not all that hot at the time.Bed was very comfortable and all else about the room was fine. Dinner & breakfast was good, nothing remarkable, but again nothing to complain about. Although brief we overall enjoyed our stay but would not consider returning as it is very expensive in comparison to other places we stayed whilst on holiday in South Africa.

Room Tip: A sea view room would be awesome!

We stayed for 5 nights here and what a wonderful location, like staying in your own private residence. Very low key service but that suited us just fine. Wonderful rooms, with the most comfy bed i have ever had at a hotel! A great location for some chilling out time at the beach, with plenty of local restaurants in Ballito or Salt Rock.

One note to the managers though..... please change the CD, we got so fed up with Fleetwood Mac's greatest hits after 5 solid days!

Room Tip: Worth the expense of having an upstairs room with a seaview

I was quite excited about staying at the hotel as i had heard it was great. I was a bit disappointed though.
The location is brilliant - right next to the beach. Just walk down the steps and onto the beach.
The rooms were very odd though. Our one opened straight into the dining room!! Literally! We were woken quite early by the sounds people working in the kitchen and kids making a noise in the dining room. It felt really weird to walk out of our room and straight into the dining room.
The rooms were very small but comfortable. The same goes for the bathroom.
We had dinner there which was nice but a very limited menu and a few things on the menu were not available. Same problem with the wine - even though it was on the wine list it wasn't available.
I can't say it was bad but I also wouldn't rush back.

Room Tip: Ask them to make sure you are upstairs and not downstairs near the lounge or kitchen.

A fantastic location. The hotel is stark and void of any personality. It's almost asif the hotel was opened before ready. It seems to have been poorly built. The power kept tripping all night and we were told it was due to a wiring issue. No air conditioning working in the room which made it worse because the guards begin making a noise early in the morning, and you have you can't shut the windows because aircon doesn't work.
not a good experience at all. On the other hand staff seemed to be trying their best despite the lack of backup from management.

Room Tip: Pick another place to stay.

We stayed in the Canelands in the SA winter, this made us the only guest for two of our five nights. This is what celeb live is all about. The very personal service made us feel quite at home. This was topped off with the dolphin sighings we had over breakfast. Really amazing!

Saltrock is a nice location to do beach, mircoplane flying, eating and golfing. The Canelands is the perfect basis to do so. We also had lovely dinners in the restaurant!

If you have time to spare, do the spa! Great massages and treatments at afforadable prices.

We would image that the Canelands looks and feels different durng summer, it that becomes more lively with more guest and visitors attending. Just that you check it out, before booking.

We stayed at Canelands for two nights relaxation at the end of a very busy four week trip to SA and treated ourselves to a sea-facing room – well worth the extra! The room was simply stunning. The doors opened the full length of the room onto our balcony which had a lounger for catching the sun first thing. The bed faced out onto the ocean and so did the bath (which was huge!) The shower was also huge and the wardrobe space endless (if you were lucky enough to be staying long enough to fill it!). A turn down service is provided and towels for the pool. The pool area was nice and relaxing and there is steps leading onto the beach from which it’s a short stroll to the tidal pools for swimming. The staff were all very polite. We didn’t have dinner at the restaurant but the breakfast was lovely. There are a few nearby bars/restaurants and we also drove around 5 minutes to Ballito which has a wide selection.

Highly recommended!

Room Tip: Sea-facing rooms are well worth the extra.
