cant comment on hotel rooms, but stayed in the lodge in the grounds.beautiful(but @£150 night should be). clean, living room, kitchen, with fridge, cooker, washing machine.upstairs bathroom, contained bath and shower.two bedrooms(1x2 1 twin+camp bed). clean, rooms/bedding. beds nice and firm.if staying in double its close to the road, noise from traffic. tastefully decorated/and furnished.. staff are helpful/attentive.only let down was breakfast, at £15 a tad pricey for 3* hotel.

Room Tip: the lodge, sleeps 4-5

From the moment we enquired about using the Glen Yr Afon as our wedding venue to the time we left for our honeymoon nothing was to much for Carol and the team.
The bride-to-be and her family arrived the day before the wedding and were treated like royalty by everyone, the meal in Clarke's was superb with waiter service akin to that which you would receive at the most prestigious of resturants.
On the day of our wedding my wife was made to feel like a princess and thanks to Carol not one but two floral 'hicups' (i might add, by an external florist) were quickly rectified.
The wedding breakfast was exquisit, again nothing to much trouble.
I'll finish the review (before it becomes more like a diary entry) by saying a big THANK YOU to everyone who made the day so special.

I will be recomending the Glan Yr Afon to anyone and everyone.

Our daughter got married at this hotel on Friday 9th November 2012 and what a fantastic day. From the by first visit that our daughter and now son in law made to the hotel the experience was positive. Carol the wedding co-ordinator, fabulous lady, was professional and organised and if at any time we needed her she was always available and happy to help.
We stayed at the hotel the evening before and were so well looked after at dinner.
On the big day, there were staff on hand from first thing preparing for our wedding, happy to help but not intrusive.
Our host on the day was Mat and he was superb to say the least. He and his team made so much effort to make the day special, not just for Laura and John but for every guest.
The food and service were exceptional and nothing was too much trouble.
The evening disco was excellent with music choices to suit all and the dance floor was never empty.
We can see why the venue is so very popular for weddings and if our experience is anything to go by they definitely deserve to be Wedding venue of the year.
Carol, Mat and the whole team, thank you so much for making the day absolutely perfect.

Room Tip: The majority as of the guests stayed at the hotel and all of the rooms appeared to be nice. The brid...

The AMAZINGLY LOUD and frightening fire alarm in our room went off at 1:00 a.m., waking the whole hotel, including our party of septuagenarians staying overnight after a reunion dinner for 22 people. After several minutes of alarm and confusion we could detect no evidence of fire and phoned reception. We were told that there was a fault in the system and that guests should return to our rooms and beds. At 3:20 a.m. the same alarm went off AGAIN for what seemed an age, and once more there was much alarm and confusion. After some delay a member of staff was heard moving outside our door. He told us that it was another malfunction and that nothing could be done or would be done temporarily to disable the alarm system because it was "a safety issue". That was silly, because by that time nobody was going to take further alarms that night seriously. He could give no assurance that it would not happen again. We returned to bed and waited. My wife did not go to sleep after 3:20 a.m. In the morning at checkout no senior member of staff was present to explain or apologise. The day staff on duty appeared to know little of the night's disruptions. A verbal complaint was made with a request for a token reduction of £20 in the bill. The receptionist went away to confer and returned, with no apology, to say that because it was "a safety issue" nothing could be allowed. For fear of embarrassing ourselves and our friends (who had already checked out) we bit our tongues and paid up. It was a very poor response, after a VERY disturbed night.

Our room was a fair size, but the lighting in room 10 and in its bathroom was less than adequate.

Room Tip: Avoid room 10 if you prefer a well-lit bathroom.

Dear jmrholsworthy

Thank you for taking the time to post a review on tripadvisor.

It is quite a common occurrence for fire alarm to be triggered in hotels. Thankfully fire alarm activations are few and far between at the Glen yr Afon and I can’t recall one going off at night before.

Our detection system is very sophisticated, sensitive and fully addressable allowing us to identify the triggered zone easily; our night manager quickly investigated the fault area before silencing the alarm as no danger was visible. Guests were advised that this was a false alarm. Unfortunately the alarm was triggered again by the same sensor, this time the fault was located to a small condensate pump in our cellar. The pump was isolated, the alarm was silenced and guests re-assured. Naturally this was an inconvenience, but the set of circumstances were outside our control.

Quite rightly the suggestion to disable the fire alarm system would never be considered, these detection systems are put in place for the safety and well-being of guests, staff and the fabric of the building. By their very nature they are designed to be loud to alert guests, and must achieve a minimum of 65 decibels of noise by the bed head.

In the morning the owners of the business were serving breakfast (having been present and called back in during both faults) and indeed I think that I’m correct in saying you addressed one directly at the reception desk, where a full apology and explanation was offered.

I am pleased to say that despite the alarm going off twice the rest of our guests that night, including the re-union party were very understanding and gracious. We have since heard from your reunion organiser who was delighted with the evening and was full of praise for the hotel, the food and the serving staff.

The lighting in room 10 is provided by very bright halogen spotlights in the ceiling in both bedroom and bathroom, with the addition of a shaving light in the bathroom, table lamp and wall lights in the bedroom, but thank you for your feedback.

I do hope that you will stay again at the Glen yr Afon and look forward to welcoming you back. A huge effort is put in to provide the best experience – I can assure you that we remain totally committed to our high standards, and trust we can be of service in the future.

Yours sincerely

Mr Tim Strong

This review is a little over due, nevertheless. We were lucky enough to enjoy our Wedding at this exquisite venue, including a family meal the night previous. From beginning to end everything was faultless! The evening before the big day 30 family members and friends attended a Wedding Guest Break evening meal i enjoyed Sirloin Blue with Jack Daniels Sauce, vegetables were fresh and plentiful and deserts out of this world.
Now to the big day, without over exaggerating this hotel serves more Weddings than Hugh Heffner has had sexual partners. They make it look so easy, choice of starters, mains and puddings, silver service resembles a precision military operation. After the Wedding Breakfast the ballroom was turned around with efficiency and style in preparation for 250 Evening Guests.
The hotel organised the brilliant ' Elastic Band ' who made sure the party went on well into the early hours.Breakfast in the morning was plentiful and freshly cooked, there is a wide variety of choices from fresh fruit, cereal, yogurts, fish and cooked breakfast.
There is no doubt this is a great Wedding Venue its recent award is proof of this, but in my opinion its the little touches and attention to detail that set this place apart from its competitors. The tastings, the immaculate grounds (not a cigarette butt in sight or leaf out of pace) manicured gardens, champagne left in the bridal suite and the photo that awaits the bride and groom at the top table! I understand there has been refurbishment to bedrooms which is a added bonus.

Due to attend a wedding on the Saturday I decided to treat myself and go Friday for a two night stay. And what a treat. As a solo traveller I am always a little apprehensive arriving at a strange destination. I need not have worried I was greeted by a friendly young lady who helped me through registration and found some one to carry my luggage to my room. The room was very comfortable and contained all I could want. I went into the lounge bar for a pre dinner drink and again friendly staff ensured I was comfortable. The restaurant staff again were friendly and helpful. . The food was wonderful and I was spoilt for choice.I was given a brief tour of the ground floor by one of the owners. The wedding the next day was superb, again nothing was too much trouble, and the bride and groom and their families couldnt have had a better day. I will definitely try to go back some time in the near future. Diolch yn fawr !

Deservedly known as the best wedding venue in Wales. We have just enjoyed our commitment ceremony (a mixture of an engagement party and a commitment to each other in our second relationship) with all the pomp and occasion of a wedding. The hotel was perfect. The management and staff team were attentive and caring before and on the day; the venue is a reclusive place with charm and character; the food and wine were exquisite; the recommended support of music and entertainment did not disappoint; for staying guests it was a wonderful retreat; the small town of Usk is a beautiful back-drop for walks, eateries and shopping. Look no further for your special venue for your special occasion.
