Antares Hotel
Reviewed May 16, 2013

I am not generally a fussy traveller. I've been around the world as a backpacker.

This hotel was awful.

The hotel is about 20km outside of Verona, it is fairly close to the airport. The buses to and from Verona run infrequently (we arrived on a Sunday and there were none at all). A taxi to Verona costs around 30 - 40 €.

The marketing for this hotel is very good and does not at all resemble what we found in the hotel.

On arrival the receptionist was rude and abrasive.

We booked a "suite" because it was my birthday. There was a living room with a sofa facing a wall less than a foot away and a tiny TV which you couldn't wash. The sofa was dirty.

The bathroom had a shower and a jet-bath. The bath had not been cleaned and had dirt marks all over it. I've stayed in backpackers hostels that were cleaner.

Our room had the view of a nice swimming pool (there are two). We found a couple getting intimate (granted not the hotel's fault).

The other pool was full of children who did not seem to be staying at the hotel.

We ate lunch - which wasn't great and again some attitude from the waiting staff.

We arrived at about 2pm and had checked out by 6pm. No apology was given by the receptionist. We moved to Hotel Bologna in the centre of Verona - supposedly a 3 star hotel but was heads and shoulders above this place and far cheaper.

Complete waste of money.

..really did; very easy to find (in the suburb of Villafranca, close to the airport), on the left side, comming from Verona towards Villafranca
If you are lucky you may find a parking spot in the garage, (limited places, I guess there are few places for cars )
very spacious reception hall, 2 young and sypatic girls at the reception,
quite wide range of food at the restaurant (I had breakfast buffet) for italian standards (I was very surprised at the morning) and polite stuff
The room was cosy, bathroom with shower and bathtub, I found complementary shaving kit, toothbrush and toothpast, and cleaning sponge for shoes - never seen/found in any hotel room visited so far!! sleeping quality was very good
When I entered into the room, it was very heated..even too hot to sleep
Behind hotel there is a horse stable, you can watch horse breeding from your room window!
Near hotel is wellness center with saunas, massages and etc...I didn't see it, but I saw a sun terrase on the hotel roof..on the outher side is outdoor swimming pool which was closed (it was in December 2012)
If you are looking for a night or two to stay outside Verona, I definitelly recommend antares hotel in Villafranca di Verona...few steps from hotel are restaurant with pizzeria (La greca), shooping center, clothes stores and self gas station...
Generally speaking my experience is positive and would come back....

Room Tip: there are 3/4 floors (elevators)

Thankfully, the bus to and from Verona (Number 156) picks up right outside the hotel gates. It runs from 6:04am to 19:14pm at hourly / half-hourly intervals depending on the time of day (timetable available at reception). Finding a seat on the bus never proved an issue. The bus to the city takes just over 20 mins and drops you about a 5 minute walk from the Roman Amphitheatre and the heart of the old town on the corso P.Nuova. The last bus from Verona departs at 19:55pm, on the opposite side of Corso P. Nuova, about 2 minutes walk past McDonalds.

As for the hotel, I stayed for two nights on business as the location was convenient, but would not recommend the place to leisure travellers - room maintenance is lax and corners are clearly cut to keep costs down. On the plus side, in room wi-fi was free with no log-in required and signal strength was consistently excellent.

Room Tip: Choose a room away from the front of the hotel, as the curtains were not effective in reducing light...

Rooms are big and nice decorated and it's a shame that they don't give a damn about it. Everything is so dirty, lots of mold etc. We had to change our room because window could not open and it was soooo hot in the room and was lack of air. Shower was broken and etc. Other room was nothing cleaner but at least we could open the window. We didn't get any sleep because hotel was full of children on excursion and they were so loud and running on halls etc. Reception didn't bother. Of course, they speak english very bad. Breakfast was nice though and also dinner. We were on halfboard and I couldn't say anything against food. It's a pity that they don't care about their property. We were there one night only and we won't come back!

Antares hotel is maybe not that far away from verona but a bus is stopping by only once in few hours and if it is full you have to wait another hour or longer. A receptionist was very unhelpful and rude. When she informed us that there are no busses going to Verona on Sunday she did not bother to advice us other options. I felt that we are irritating her each time we asked for some information or help. Unfortunately she was there on all our stay and made us to feel very uncomfortable. The room was very nice but bathroom could be cleaner. On the other hand the breakfast was amazing and we enjoyed free spa and swimming pool too we also liked a decor of the hotel.
If the location and attitude of the hotel staff would be different then we probably would have enjoyed our stay.

It seems that some travellers have had poor experiences at the Antares... but don't decide too quickly from the negative reports.

It depends what you expect and what you are looking for.

We stayed in early September for 13 nights for and at 45 euros a night for a big double room with a jacuzzi bath and separate shower we though it was one of the best deals we have ever had.

Others complain about flies, or rude and inattentive staff, or an odour from the stables. I say get used to it.... this rural is Italy in the summer so you expect some flying insects... but we were never bothered by them or he occasional aroma of horses.

The Antares is a large hotel on a main road about 25 minutes by car from Verona and right on the edge of Villafranca, the centre of which is about 12 minutes in the car.

So unless you have wheels or do not mind longish trip on public transport to get to places, then the location could be an issue.

General overview of the hotel: public areas are ample with quirky furnishings. The restaurant is large and most of the staff quite attentive. Any request was always met with a smile and was always fulfilled... like we asked for fresh tomatoes with our breakfast and got a big fresly-sliced bowl of them.

The breakfast itself is extensive, with hot and cold options including cereals, fresh and tinned fruit and yoghurt and spreads like nutella. There a variety of cold meats and cheeses with fresh bread and there is bacon and eggs as a hot option.

We were allocated a room in the "Blue Building". (Some reviewers suggest it is an "older" part but I do not think so. The entire complex would have been built at the same time.) In fact we decided that the Blue Building was the better wing to be in. The hexagonal tower has its drawbacks, including the fact that the windows have limited opening.

Our big double room on the third floor had simple, but tasteful modern furnishings, with comfortable kingside bed. Towels and bedlinen were changed ever days by the pleasant maids. It looked as though it has been re-decorated about five years ago. A great boon is that the two big opening windows could be completely opened wide, with ease. Worth mentioning hat the aircon struggled to beat the heat on really sunny days in our south-facing room overlooking the horse riding centre and the sports fields.

The bathroom (as mentioned) was impressive and one of the biggest I have seen in an Italian hotel. The jucuzzi bath did leak when the motor was operated, so we did not bother with it again, but I guess we could have reported it and go moved to another room if we had wished. We did not bother because we prefer the shower, which was itself of a generous size with plenty of hot water.

The swimming pool is very good - though more of a leisure pool and not really suited to serious swimmers, since it is is shallow at both ends. To swim end to end in deep water you have to go across the centre of the pool. It is surrounded by large areas with sun-loungers, including lawned areas shielded by pomegranate trees and the like (the pomegranates were in fruit when we were there, but down't bother trying to eat the fruit (as I did!)

Altogether the pool is great facility and although it is open to the public at 9 euros a day, it was never crowded when we there there, though I guess that it would be busy in July and certainly in August (two holiday months when we avoid crowds if possible).

There is a large indoor bar with a shaded terrace alongside the pool, serving drinks and snacks all day. It also has pool tables and is clearly aimed at the younger visitors like those from the young touring football teams who use the place because it has three full-sized soccer pitches.

We never used the indoor spa.... but I gather that it is good and would be a real boon out of season.

We toured around Mantova and the surrounding countryside which is full charming towns and villages. The south of Lake Garda is about 30 minutes by car. Lazise, Peschiera del Garda, Bardolino and Garda town are all superb. Certainly the best resorts on the lake, probably in best in Northern Italy, and I'd say in the entire country. In Bardolino seek out the restaurante Corte San Giovanni where the seafood, steaks, pizzas and pasta are excellent and not too expensive!

So, what's not to like? The hotel reception is on the basement level, which is a bit odd. You sometimes have to wait for the smallish lifts. The dinner served in the hotel is not very good value for money, if you are not on an inclusive deal, (but the La Greca restaurant 60 metres down the road is superb.) The disco in the bar was noisy on Saturday night (but it did end at midnight).

Some reviewers tell how the location of the hotel is awful. Well, it is on the edge of the countryside, which is very flat. Th main road heading into Villafranca is lined with shops and there are industrial units on the estate to the south west. But none of this ever bothered us... we like a bit of hustle and bustle and there are plenty of supermarkets within 2-5 minutes drive.

All told we only had very minor niggles and considering the very economical deal we got through Low Cost Holidays, we rate the hotel as truly excellent value for money.

We would not hesitate to return and recommend it to anyone looking for a good value large hotel, but concede that is most suited to those with a car.

Room Tip: As for a room overlooking the country on the 2nd or 3rd floor in the Blue Building.
