Capofaro Malvasia & Resort
Ranked #4 of 6 Hotels in Malfa
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed July 6, 2009

I cannot say enough good things about Capofaro. My husband and I decided to spend a good portion of our honeymoon (8 days) at the resort and after a very long journey from New York City, we were not disappointed. From the moment we arrived, the staff at Capofaro did everything they could to make us feel welcomed and relaxed. Since it was our honeymoon, they even had a complimentary bottle of sparkling wine and dessert tray waiting in our room for us.

The resort is perched on top of a cliff overlooking the Mediterranean Sea and two of the other Aeolian Islands: Stromboli and Panarea (if you are lucky, at night, you can see Stromboli spew lava!). Capofaro is set in a working vineyard, which makes for a very peaceful and beautiful setting. While there is no private beach (few, if any, hotels on the island have this), the resort makes up for this with their amazing pool and lounge area that looks like it belongs on the cover of a travel magazine. The rooms are decorated very nicely and well kept. Each room has views of the ocean.

The food at Capofaro was very good and beautifully presented. If you want to venture into town for dinner, there are plenty of good options, but if you do not have a car, it can be bit pricey - 30 euro roundtrip for a taxi.

In addition to its beauty and good food, the staff at Capofaro really helped make the trip memorable. From the front desk staff who was eager to help answer questions regarding airport transfers, arrange taxis and also help us decide on the right excursions for us, to the attentive wait staff and bartenders, everyone was so friendly and really tried to go above and beyond to make our stay special. One example that really stands out is one night, when we ordered room service. To our surprise, practically the whole restaurant was brought up to our room so that we could dine just as well as if we were at the restaurant. They prepared a table out on our terrace, complete with romantic candlelight. We were not expecting anything extravagant (since it was room service!), but it really could not have been more romantic and special.

Capofaro is all about relaxation and enjoying some down time with friends or a partner - their "activities" consist of getting massages, taking a dip in the pool and having an aperitivo while watching the sun set. While these are all very worthy pursuits (and I enjoyed them all to the fullest!), for those who don't need so much down-time, there are also opportunities for adventure outside of the resort. I would recommend taking a day trip by boat (Capofaro can help you arrange this) to the island of Panarea. The town is very beautiful and the captain of the boat will also take you to out-of-the-way beaches and coves to go swimming and snorkeling. Another excursion that is well worth the money is a private boat rental - known as a gommone in Italian - these small motor boats can fit about 4 people and can be easily driven around Salina. My husband and I had never driven a boat before, but got the hang of it very easily and spent the day finding secluded coves around the island to swim in. This was one of the highlights of our trip! You can also rent at scooter for around 20 euros per day, which would give you the ability to drive to Salina's beaches. While the beaches are nice - especially Pollara - and deserve a visit, for me, they couldn't beat the allure of Capofaro's relaxing pool and attentive poolside service!

We could not be happier with our choice to spend our honeymoon at Capofaro!

I stayed in Capofaro with my girlfriend and have to say it was an amazing place. We had a very warm and friendly welcome when we checked in and even had our room upgraded free of charge which was a very nice surprise.

The room we stayed in was very spacious with a trendy décor and a great bathroom with a good powerful shower. The bed is a large mattress placed on a concrete plinth that is actually very comfortable.

The pool area and restaurant is a fantastic place to relax and enjoy the brilliant cooking and service. If you want to get away from it all you can also sit on the roof of your room where there are funky lounge chairs for you to enjoy the view of the light house, sea and back drop of one of Salina’s hills. The area around the hotel is totally free of development so you will enjoy a great quiet atmosphere your whole trip.

We explored the island by moped that the hotel organized for us and I can highly recommend it. It was great fun whizzing around the Island visiting the villages, restaurants and generally taking in the scenery.

I cannot begin to explain how amazing Capofaro is - from the staff to the location to the restaurant to the atmosphere. My wife and i spent 8 days on our honeymoon in July and it was serenity personified. I could not imagine a more peaceful setting. This is truly the place to go if you want to get away from everything and unwind. The location speaks for itself, but i must give credit to the staff - amazing attention to detail and an obvious and distinct interest in our enjoyment. Our stay could not have been better. Thank you everyone at Capofaro for a truly amazing week.

This is a modern hotel set on a peninsular of Salina, a quiet and unspoiled island. Warm welcome, informative staff who were always helpful. Rooms set apart nicely, most with spectacular views - some are set back in gardens so, if the sea view is of utmost important, check this out before booking. Simple accommodation - lots of white - with modern, stylish bathrooms with a good shower - if a bit cramped. Accommodation comfortable but the pillows were horrid - cheap foam filled and uncomfortable. All have their own terrace area. Pool is large with decking and gardens so plenty of space for everyone. Restaurant is great - changing menu each day which is quite short but the food is always excellent. A problem for us as we need to be in contact with work is that it does not have WIFI or computer connection in the rooms. There is one computer connection in the communal room which is nearly always busy - and very slow - also, the internet security had run out when we were there so we could not do some financial bits we needed to do. Salina does not have a huge amount to do - this is a place to relax, walk, swim and sunbathe. If you tire of this, it is a short boat ride to the other islands. We also found a lot of restaurants closed so be aware out of season. Pictures advertising this hotel are what you get - it is a truly nice place set between the port and the island's main village.

We spent three nights in Capofaro at the end of May, and would have happily extended our stay, but were unable to as the resort was already fully booked. Capofaro Malvasia is a truly magical place. The setting is beautiful, the architecture of the rooms and suites are in keeping with the lovely landscape, and the service is exceptional. The quality of the staff, from Alberto the manager, down through all the maintenance staff, housekeeping, restaurant servers, and reception clerks, was only matched by the quality of our surroundings - the furnishings, the linens, and the softest towels I’ve ever felt.

The resort is on a working vineyard owned by the Tasca d’Almerita family, and fields of Malvasia grapes cover the rolling hills, surrounded by a variety of fragrant flowers and herbs. The seaside view is of the islands of Stromboli and Panarea, and our suite was the first on the bluff with an unobstructed and unparalleled view. The poolside restaurant is lovely as well, and the food was outstanding. Although we didn’t need to leave the resort given the level of comfort and luxury and availability of all amenities, we chose to take a taxi one evening (from Antonello – a super-friendly cabdriver who provides services to Capofaro) to see the sunset at Pollara. We stopped briefly in the town of Malfa and had a drink in the piazza, and then watched the sunset at Pollara, the setting for the film Il Postino.

While we spent 2 weeks in total travelling through Sicily and stayed at a number of the top rated hotels (including the Kempinski in Mazzara del Vallo and Palazzo San Domenico in Taormina), Capofaro was our favourite and the most romantic destination I have ever visited. We will definitely return one day, hopefully in the not too distant future.

We stayed at Capo Faro Resort for 3 days. We were greeted and taken on a tour of the property by the manager and then shown to our room. We had a suite with a large bedroom, a small sitting room, a large bathroom with a jacuzzi bathtub, two french doors that opened on to a terrace with comfortable outdoor funiture overlooking the vineyard and the sea!! Magnificant!!! The staff was very friendly and helpful. They have two housekeeping services - one in the morning and one in the evening.

You will need to rent a car or a buggy if you want to see the island because the taxis are very expensive. The hotel can set this up for you. It is very secluded and remote which I think adds to the serenity of the grounds.

The only complaint I have is the food. The restaurant was horrible!! They need to invest in a good chief!! Normally I would say this would ruin our stay but the place is so wonderful we over looked it. The breakfast is very good. They have the best mixed fresh fruit drinks I've ever had.

Can't wait to return!!!
