Private Highlight of Lijiang Day Trip: One Day Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge Tour...

Only had a day's time, so didn't do the trek on the high path to get from Upper Rapids to Middle Rapids, which we heard was not too fantastic compared to the Middle Rapids trek and will take at least the entire day. Continued the journey on the bus that took us from Lijiang to Tina's Guesthouse at Middle Rapids. Bags deposits for free. Take your day pack, walk abit, cross the bridge and descend via Tian Ti (Heavenly Ladder) near Bridge Cafe, down to the gorge. This is a path "managed" by a family of locals. A token road crossing fees apply. Steep but manageable trek down. Look out for the path to the other rock right next to the "Tiger Leaping Rock" (where you'll be charged for admission), to get really close to the gorge and water for free. Recommended to take a seperate way up although a seperate token road crossing fees apply as it's seperately "managed" by another family. Come up from the gorge abit and look out for the right turn onto Yi Xian Tian Path. Easy, gentle, scenic route to Walnut Garden. Great photo ops throughout the entire way. Whole excursion down to the gorge took only a few hours including plenty of time for photo-taking. We started after lunch at Tina's and had time to make our way to Haba Village (1hr drive away) for dinner and a night stay-over after the trek.

We stopped at the gorge whist travelling from Lijang to Shangri la. It was great to stop and have fresh air whilst climbing down to see the water thundering past.

There are 2 sides that you can choose from- one with a few km walk and the other with about 500 steps down. We went the steps route and it seems like we got a much better view down the river and we were almost over the water. I think the negative views must have visited the other side. The only people trying to sell us stuff were the ones offering to carry us down and back up the stairs in wicker chairs. We saw an elderly lady use this service!

Definitely recommend it!

Best attraction around the area in my opinion. Allow a few hours to hike along the trail, but be prepared to shell out RMB10 each time you pass a checkpoint (total of 3 in the trail).

There're 3 ascents, Along the middle one, which is called 天梯 or "Sky Ladder", after climbing a ladder towards the top, you can rent a horse where the caretaker will bring you towards the main road. They brought us all the way to the Youth Hostel since we were catching a bus there. For RMB80 and to ride a horse up along a valley is an unforgettable experience!

Amazing hike. Spectacular views. Clean air. Great escape from the much of the rest of China.

Can message with specific questions, but we started on evening in Qiaotou. Hiked 1.5 hours to Naxi Family guesthouse. Woke up, started at 930 and hiked to Sean's Guesthouse, arriving around 5. This was after stopping for lunch and a short detour to see some views of the middle gorge.

It is a tough hike. If you are in decent shape you should be fine. if not, allot a little more time for the portion from Naxi Guesthouse, as it is mostly uphill from there through the 28 bends.
