Off the beaten path, behind the (formerly) world's largest prayer wheel, lies this gem of a restaurant. It offers a wide range of foods, but the eastern Indian food is particularly amazing. The restored building is worth the visit in itself, let alone the conversation with the owner.

It was a really great place, the food was good and the staff were really friendly. The atmosphere is definitely really cool you could really feel the history there, the wood was all old and original and the art (it doubles as a gallery) was top-notch. We met the owner while there and she was really friendly and helpful, even suggesting different places/sites we could go in Shangrila and telling us more about the history of the building. Definitely a must-go place if you're travelling through :) I can't recommend it enough!

Firstly, I must say, the atmosphere with this restaurant matches the mystique of Shangri la in so many ways. The warmth of the wood and the impressive artwork around makes for an inviting and cosy atmosphere - perfect for romance, family dinner or, like me, as one. The main reason I'm writing this, however, is to place on record how Lovely the food was. Its apparent that Ms. Uttara Crees takes much pride in her food quality and presentation. I had a combination Thali set and the eggplant dip as a starter is a must. I was fortunate enough to have a chat with the owner (Uttara) - she was the first foreigner to enter these parts and has a wealth of knowledge to offer. I plan to go back and ill be at Tara Gallery Cafe straightaway!
Thank you Uttara and cheers to lovely Zhongdian.

We had dinner here on our 1 night we spent in Shangri La and found the food, drink and service all to be excellent. We wanted to sample Tibetan cuisine and benefited from the advice on the menu of the very helpful and friendly owner, Uttara Crees who gave us a great selection of dishes.

The prices are higher than you would find in your average traveller restaurant in the area but it is a different experience, aiming for the higher end. The atmosphere was really lovely and I would go back again in a heartbeat!

This is a fantastic cozy place to have a meal, a hot drink and spend time doing your emails from the top of the world. Meals reflect the distant lands trading routes linked in the past and the ubiquitous Masala Chai can be had here as well as Indian meals. It is all mountain atmosphere: trekkers and iPads; adventurous couples; young and old; a dozen different languages spoken all around. Tara's Gallery is in a charming old building, on the original cobble stone Tea-Horse caravan route, complete with original secret storing chambers and carved wooden alcoves. Gyalthang (the original name) was an important staging point for caravans trading between Tibet, Southern Yunnan, Burma and India. A must stop for anybody visiting Shangri La. This is a unique spot! Check out the art on the walls too. Not easy to find but persevere and ask the locals.
