“Explore every nook and cranny of this beautiful town :-)”
Reviewed September 12, 2013 via mobile

Eventhough this town is very touristic one must certainly not miss out in exploring this town.... Full of souvenir shops... A word of advice....DO NOT BUY DAGGERS OR SWORDS FROM THE SHOPS!!! As you may in no way take them out of the province.. Unless you are driving... But you might be stopped at the airport ...

Apart from that the town is very lively with busy markets and good restaurants all day... And in the evening go and dance with the locals and other travellers alike... Its fun and you make quick friends.

During the day visit the large square where there is the yak... Go up he stairs to the Buddhist temple / altar... And join in to spin the large prayer wheel three time, clockwise...

Most of all enjoy this town .... I miss it!!!!

“Local flavour”
Reviewed September 10, 2013 via mobile

Yeah, agree with previous comments. Quite sleepy town, and old town has plenty of character. Check out the local ladies lead the crowd in traditional Tibetan dance at sunset in the square. Good place to stop for a couple of days to adjust to the altitude. Try Puppet Inn Hostel. Dorm Y30

“Nice village atmosphere”
Reviewed July 23, 2013

After 4 days of Lijiang, Shangri-La was way more relaxed and enjoyable; I wish we had scheduled more time in Shangri-La, and less in Lijiang.

Dukezong Ancient Town felt more authentic and the shops had a bit more variety and interest than Lijiang. Yes, the stores sell touristy garb, but if you go into town, you will see the 'real' local stores. We found the restaurants and stores to be much more reasonably priced and the service was much friendlier than in Lijiang. The streets were not crowded and we felt generally safe walking around with our kids in the evening, apart from the occasional tourist wanting to grab my kids for photos - but his occurred far less often than in other places like Beijing and Lijiang.

“Great Old Town to Walk Through”
Reviewed July 10, 2013

Shangri la has a nice old town, it still has the major tourist element but I liked it better than Dali and Lijiang's old town. Try the yak jerky, yak burger, and yak cheese. The Buddhist temple with the large prayer wheel was also huge highlight.

“Old town not to be missed ...”
Reviewed June 30, 2013

This is my second visit here, and I'm still loving it! The buildings and cobblestoned (slope-y and slippery) streets make it a great experience. Many shops, quite a few of which are unique and selling things that are of a local flavor but which you get nowhere else.
