“Excellent place to stay in Zhongdian”
Reviewed October 10, 2010

While Zhongdian (or Shagri-La) is a really disappointing chinese mass-tourism place, which does not offer absolutely anything attractive, this hotel is the perfect retreat to run away from the exploited mass tourism spots in town. The rooms are spacious, the interior design is really beautiful and we enjoyed a lot the wooden bath tub and the fire place in the junior suite. The balcony is perfect and the view to the backside of the songstam monastery is amazing. Service is friendly and good and the restaurant is absolutely ok. Breakfast is brilliant for westeners and asians. Price-Value is top. So, if these is no chance to avoid going to Zhongdian, then at east stay in this hotel. It will lighten up your stay in Zhongdian.

Songstam Retreat has breath-taking views and tastefully done up, cozy rooms. The Tibetan carpets and artefacts add color and character to the huge room - complete with an Emperor-size bed and a wooden tub. We had peaceful sleep, and woke up to a scenic view of the sun rising over lush meadows and the monastery.

The hotel is walking distance from the monastery, and is easily reachable from the old town. Unfortunately, we were so taken by the old time, that we didn't get the time to visit the hotel bar and library and explore around the hotel.

The staff was warm and friendly, but you'll be better off booking tours from old town rather than the hotel.

We stayed for two nights in a deluxe room, which turned out to be a two level mini-house. There was a toilet on both levels and the full bathroom upstairs had a large wooden tub as well as a spacious shower. The bedroom and main bathroom are together but on three levels with a few steps dividing each level. This was a problem if you needed to use the bathroom in the dark. The steps need to be marked to you cansee them in the dark. The view out to the back of the temple, over a fields of grazing animals was lovely. The breakfast room was heated with a wood stove and offered a nice variety of food. The location is away from the new commercial town and within a downhill walk of the old town around the temple. Consider the location when deciding to stay here - if you want a retreat hotel this is it, if you want to be near town then choose somewhere else.

The local authorities have renamed this city "Shangri-la," which is supposed to be heaven on earth. A foreigner visiting might be tempted to sue for false advertising, because it's almost as far from paradise as you can imagine. That said, you can leave town, go over a small mountain and suddenly, you are at a place that's pretty close to heaven. A beautiful Tibetan monastery (currently being restored) and lovely pastures with traditional Tibetan houses dominate the beautiful landscape. And right behind the monastery (a pleasant 10 minute walk on a trail) sits the Songtsam Resort (not to be confused with the older, simpler Songtsam hotel adjacent to the monastery). This new hotel is quite attractively designed and furnished in Tibetan-style -- "five stars" in every way.

Perhaps the most notable thing about the hotel is the service. The staff really cares about their guests and -- after having some communication difficulties in other 4 and 5 star Chinese hotels -- it was a welcome breath of fresh air to have many staff members communicate with me in PERFECT English! Management seems to have consciously hired employees who have studied overseas, which is wonderful for its foreign guests.

If there's a downside to the hotel, it's that there's really not that much to do in the area. The hotel is apparently building a spa, which would be a welcome addition. They offer a free tour of the monastery, which is nice, and there's some walking to do in the area. They've also started horseback riding, and you can grab a taxi into the Shangri-la Old Town (not as interesting or as large as, say, the Lijiang Old Town). There are some other sights to be seen in the region as a day tour (thermal pool, Tibetan villages, etc.), but you might get a bit bored after a few days.

As far as the restaurant goes, the breakfast buffet (try to get it included in their rates, and they sometimes offer better deals when you contact them directly) is quite good, especially for Western foods. The Tibetan dinner we had was good, and the service and setting outstanding. The food tastiness, however, wasn't much better than at much cheaper restaurants in town. But this is not unusual in China: spending more money on a restaurant meal in China usually gets you more service and atmosphere, but not necessarily tastier fare. Whereever you eat, make sure to try the yak meat and yak yogurt, both very tasty (a bit like beef and dairy).

Finally, don't expect to be able to buy a lot of Tibetan crafts in the area. There's actually little shopping of interest to foreingers, which is a shame. The Shangri-la Old Town is your best bet for what's available.

As others have mentioned already, the location of the hotel and the building is amazing. Sits by itself overlooking the temples. Rooms are great, and the atmosphere is really nice.

We were not so impressed with the restaurant. It is quite expensive for what it is. Went for local cuisine one day, and western the next. The local cuisine is not much different from what you would get in a restaurant elsewhere, and so struggle to justify the huge price premium. The western meal (pasta) come uncooked. The Western F&B manager explained it was due to the high altitude, and he offered that we did not pay and brought a new portion properly cooked in a pressure cooker. Fair. The next day, we had the same problem, and the same F&B manager offered the same solution.

When I arrived on the first night, I had problems with the altitude (huge headache) and got a small bag of oxygen to inhale. Was then charged a hefty price for the pleasure. I am sure that other guests have the same problem, and would have expected that to be part of the price. Especially since local shops charge 10% of the price for a bottle of oxygen.

I liked the hotel building and location. But the experience left me feeling ripped off. It does not justify the premium. For the price, I would have expected better quality service and food. I hope they will get there one day. But at current the local hotels are not that much worse and a lot cheaper.

We stayed at Songtsam Retreat for 3 nights between 5-8 August and had an outstanding experience. The location and views are breathtaking and the rooms are very spacious and well decorated. The balconies/space outside the rooms were great to chill out in the evening with a glass of wine.

The restaurants serve excellent food - especially Yak meat dishes like steak and curry. The breakfast spread is ample to start off the day. The only issue we faced was not getting much choice when we landed at 10:30 PM.

But besides the room and food, what sets the place apart is their service. Very courteous and each and every member of the staff was keen to make our stay memorable. Patrick Druet, the GM, is very approachable and goes out of his way to resolve any issues, as is the restaurant manager.

All in all, an excellent vacation!

I was amazed to find this "retreat" on the edge of a somewhat smaller town in the middle of nowhere, China. This place is worth every penny. Giant wooden baths, separate showers, Tibetan decorated rooms, amazing views. Service and staff are exceptional. Only drawback is that it is not walking distance to town, but the town is loud and dirty anyway and this retreat is on the edge of the mountain overlooking the monastary. Try the Tibetan food in the restaurant- its DELICIOUS.
