“Glad I stayed here. Friendly, honest hosts.”
Reviewed May 5, 2013

I would recommend this place as the hosts told me that I've overpaid on hostelworld and charged me about 40% lower than the rate stated on my booking form. This kind of honesty is very rare. This coupled with a nice room, location of the place, and the overall atmosphere of the hostel has my overall approval. Its located slightly further away from the main square, which is good as they have nightly dancing at the square. Its also close to chicken temple which is about 20 minute hike from the hostel which offers great views of Shangri-la.

As mentioned before its also a great place to get Korean food if you were in the mood for such. Heard the yak burger is pretty good too. You can get laundry done here for 10Y a load and the hosts are friendly and helpful on tips for getting around Zhongdian.

Great hostel all in all - owners are extremely friendly, helpful and provided good travel advice and tips! The common area was a good place to meet people and exchange travel stories. The hostel is located a minute's walk away from the main square but considerably far from tourist madness. Be sure to also visit the white chicken temple located just up the hill behind the hostel. The 5-bed dorm rooms had 2 super single beds that are super comfy with electric blankets. Breakfast was average but they are in the process of changing their menus and the yak burger with potato rosti is a definite must-try! A suggestion would be to add another stove/burner in the common area! Highly recommend this hostel to anyone visiting Shangrila!

We only met the, presumably, wife of Jun who was extremely helpful and friendly and advised us well on things to see and do. The decor was indeed Tibetan in style, simple, homely and very colourful which made a welcome change from other hostels in China. It was in a great location so convenient for everything. We had a double en suite, the bed was huge, comfy and with decent bedding including an electric blanket which is much needed at this time of year. The bathroom was fine, with hot water at all times. Unfortunately because we were downstairs and tucked away in the corner of the building the room was very dark so not a place you would want to be during the day at all (suited us as we were out all the time) but there was also some rot/damp in the timbers in the room which made it smell musty. I really hate to say this but we also heard rats running between our ceiling and the floor above...maybe a seasonal thing and something that can be dealt with.

Just like what everyone say here about Jun, he truly is very funny and very entertaining to his customers in the hostel. The whole experience was very pleasant and I tell all my friends about it. It was like as if I went on sleep over at a friend's house. The hostel is just a very simple yet very humble and warm place where almost all guests mingle at the living room and share different travel stories. Jun would always be there and share his ideas on our travel plans and he also told us of how he ended up staying in Shangri-la for good. Since the hostel is a traditional Tibetan house converted into a seasonal hostel , you cant really expect much about the amenity. During my stay there, I was just so happy and I felt so warm with this nice family who accomodated us so I decided to stay longer. They also serve breakfast and they some meals too if you dnt feel like going out to eat.

We stayed for 3 nights and it was a wonderful experience. Jun and his wife, Christine are such wonderful host. Jun is Korean and married a local Naxi lady and established this gem in Shangri-la. The guesthouse offers two rooms with attached bathroom while others have shared facilties which includes dorm rooms. Fantastic homestay atmosphere. The common area is cosy with TV and an interesting old-fashioned fireplace. Rooms are cozy and beautifully decorated with a Tibetan feel. You can order food as well and their Yak burgers are to die for!!
It is very convenient located to the main square in Shangri-la old town (just less than 5 mins walk). Incidentally, Jun is also an experienced guide. So if you are interested to trek to Yading or Yubeng...he is your man. Great stay for us. Will go back if we have another chance.

Room Tip: Book early as they are very popular

What a great guesthouse!! Jun and Christina make perfect hosts- friendly, chatty, kind and caring. Above all, They are jovial, and a fountain of knowledge on local attractions. It's easy to see why many people make this place a home away from home. I didn't get to try the Korean BBQ, but it looked superb. And the rooms are spotless - traditional Tibetan house-style (ie - basic) but very satisfactory. The balcony is a great place to kick back and unwind. And its all just a few minutes walk to the old town square No wonder they're so busy - be sure to book ahead!!

Tavern47 is about 5-10mins walk from the main square and its abit of a hike to the hostel. However,i found the hostel really comfy,i met alot of interesting people while i was here and the rooms are very clean and fresh. The toilet was also clean, although sometimes there were no hot water, but i can't complain because it was the same everywhere. I think the best thing about this hostel was there was only one area to hangout,so people could just sit around and share their stories. What made this hostel very different from the rest is the owner Jun (korean) and Christine (local) were very entertaining and helpful. They shared their stories about the places they had been and also took us to the local market to buy groceries. Overall, I would definately come back to this hostel if i were to travel to shangri la again!
