“not bad at all”
Reviewed August 15, 2012

We were a bit afraid after the "stay away" reviews below, but our holiday in this hotel turned out to be a very pleasant experience.
The hotel itself is a bit worn-out, I would credit them with 3 stars, but as we spent minimum time inside the room, it was OK. The beds were comfortable, the service was good, towels and sheets were changed daily.
The food was almost perfect, perhaps the breakfasts a bit samey, but otherwise we were very satisfied with the range and choice, especially fruits/vegs and desserts. The year before we spent our holiday in a 5***** hotel in Turkey, but the choice and range was considerably better in Santa Marina.
The beach - Ammoudara is a 7 km long sandy beach, the AI hotel customers had the sunbeds and umbrellas for free, the AI beach hotel bar served soft drinks, beer/wine and ice cream, the staff were very polite and effective.
The beach is guarded between 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the guard won´t let you swim outside the marked area, as there is a huge rocky formation some 15-20 metres from the shore with lots of sea urchins. The marked area of the sea is sea-urchins free. There is a lot of space for swimmers anyway, as the beach is 7 km wide.
What travel agencies probably won´t tell you - there is an electric plant at the left corner of the beach, some 3 km from the hotel, with 5 high chimneys. It seemed to be working every day, incl weekends, but as the smoke went off in a different direction, it was not disturbing. Anyway, it is an ugly spot on otherwise very scenic and beautiful left side of the beach.
The resort itself is visited mainly by the French (70%), the rest is divided between the Russians and Slovaks, I heard some Czech, Polish, Hungarian, some German and some English too. The animation team (Lookea) is 100% French, they are very friendly and try to engage other nations too, usually without much success :) I can imagine that that could put off some other big dominant western European nations (especially Brits and Germans) who are used to have animations in their language, but for us, animations are a totaly irrelevant criterion.
And perhaps - it is worth to stress, as we are speaking about Greece here - there were no visible effects of a crisis situation in the Santa Marina resort, staff friendly and polite, no shortages, no strikes, no hordes of desparate locals wanting to attack German tourists :)
N.B. we were a party of 4 people, 2 adults, 2 kids (10 and 8 years old)

We stayed 4 nights in the hotel, the rooms were clean enough and we had clean towels and sheets every day. We got a baby cot in good condition. We were happy to be treated a bottle of wine and fresh fruit by the hotel´s room service.
We needed to put some raw meat in the freezing for a day and they were helpful as they served us by putting it to the restaurant´s freezer.
You have to prepay the whole days which I think may be a problem if sth changes in your plans.
What we did not like is that the whole animation programmes of the hotel was in French. We are Greeks and we didn't feel at all that we are in our country.
In general though it is a decent hotel and we would stay again.

Very good hotel, food was delicious and nice prepared. Many types of meat, pasta, vegetables, fruits. Icecream whole day. Drinks - super (beer, raki, ouzo, whisky, tequila, wine...). Rooms was cleared every day. We has one year old child and we was worried about food and sleaping. But hotel reserved baby bed. No problems with waiters, animators and other staff of hotel.
Weather was much windy, but ... Beach was clear and beachpatrol was friendly.

Room Tip: Rooms in main building 2+2 with garden view.

We got put up here for one night by Thomsons when our flight got delayed. Supposed to be 4 star what a joke. The room was disgusting, there was human hair in the bed on the floor and on the tiles in the bathroom. The room looked like it had been closed foe weeks it was damp and dirty. The bath was at least 20 years old and it had been painted and the paint was now coming off.
The food was ok but if Thomsons try to put you here if you are delayed please refuse. We made out thoughts known to the rep.
Worst hotel we have ever stayed in.

My wife and I spent two weeks all-inclusive at the hotel earlier this month. The building is 25 years old and is "functional". We had a side sea room facing the mountains and had the hot evening sun on our balcony, and splendid sunsets as the hills changed colour.
The main part of the restaurant is characterless, but there is a lovely tree-covered courtyard in which to eat, and an outdoor eating area overlooking the pool. We used these two, as often as possible.
There is a 150 m green belt between the large pool and the beach. This has many lovely mature trees and shrubs, and also a putting green - 12 holes - and a boules concourse.
The long beach is abour 40 m wide, with many permanent "unbrellas" and quite a large beach bar/cafe. The sea-swimming is very good. The beach is a public one.
While we were there, the guests consisted of two Russians and four Austrians who all spoke German (I speak a little), my wife and I, and about three hundred French. The 12 -strong animation team were all French, and so all the entertainment was in that language. We are both frankophiles, having visited France on more than twenty occasions, so we were quite happy to use our knowledge of the French language, and we enjoyed watching the French enjoying themselves.
For an AI hotel, the food and wine - and the oozo of course - were good, which is one of the reasons it is full of French tourists. There was a carvery six nights a week, with excellent meat. Twice we has delicious fillet steak, slightly rare and very thinly cut by the chief chef. The rose wine, in particular, just "touched the spot".
We tended to go to lunch and dinner rather late, so the vegetables weren't as hot as you would have at home, but the salad dishes and the sweets were first class
All in all, we had a most enjoyable fortnight with a very friendly staff. One complaint I would have, is that the air-conditioning in our room -and I presume others too - was inefficient.

We've spent a week with friends in June 2009. Booking through a tour operator as the rates for individual clients and direct bookings were much higher.
The location was just fine , Amoudara is very close to Heraklion which is very convenient for someone who wants to discover the local night life.
The rooms were rather small as well as tha bathroom. Although the hotel is officialy classified as a 4 stars hotel, i would say it looks more as a good 2 or 3 star hotel.
It certainly needs an extensive modernisation.
The food was average and i would say not really greek, there were few sunbeds around the pool and it was usually quite crowded. It's ok when you are on holidays with a group of friends but not really for a romantic and quiet vacation.
