Hotel location:
Very difficult to locate, we drove around for a long time, getting lost in the residential area at the back.
No locals or shop/restaurant owners seemed to know the hotel or it's location.
It was only when we thought to pop into a hotel on a main road with a similar sounding name and to our surprise were had stumbled into the right hotel

On arrival, we were given a room on the top floor (4 flights of stairs).
We requested a room on a lower floor as we could not take all our luggage up, we were kindly given a room on the first floor (2 flights of stars).
We were lucky to have done this, as we later found out from other guests that the water is usually cold on the higher floors.

We were also lucky that we went during a quiet period, as it was often noisy, with doors banging when other guests came up to go to bed. The rooms are not soundproof & I predict could get very noisy during a busy period.

Bedroom:
Contained a fridge.
Very basic electric hob and some cutlery, pots and pans.
It was quite unclean, that we ended up eating out most of the time.
I think that the hotel owners wished to encourage guests to eat at their bar.

The room was very basic and needed a clean.
A couple of the guests (regulars to the hotel) later told us without any prompting that they deep cleaned the rooms whenever they stayed.

No iron in the hotel, I was lucky that the owner reluctantly did lend me an iron in the end as I desperately needed it as I was attended a formal Greek ceremony and needed to ensure smart attire.

Balcony:
Dirty, with dirty furniture
View was not scenic

Bathroom:
Basic
No hair dryer - made it very difficult when getting ready to attend a formal Greek ceremony.

Parking:
Our hire car aerial was stolen whilst parked in the drive.
Parking could be difficult if other guests did not park further down the drive, or sensible enough to leave a space down the middle for other cars to exit.

Garden:
Beautiful fragrant basil plants in the walk way. Nice garden.
Swimming pool available, though we didn't try it as we were concerned about it's cleanliness after experiencing the bedroom.

Other guests:
The other guests seemed unhappy that we did not spend all our time in the hotel.
It seems that the same people come once or more times each year and befriend others who are similar to themselves and they do not leave the hotel at all.

Positives:
Very cheap
The two brothers seemed to be trying hard and were friendly enough
The road into Heraklion itself is almost straight and direct (though we had a car)
The owners' aged mother was very friendly, kind and very hospitable though she spoke no Greek. If we had had more time, we would have spent more time with her.

I would recommend only if you are desperately short on cash, but do not expect to cook in the bedsit room.

Room Tip: If staying during a quiet period, select a room closer to the ground floor to ensure you get hot wat...

Booking budget accommodation can be risky, but we were very pleasantly surprised by the Imperial Studios. The room was basic, but it was very clean and we had plenty of space for all our stuff and a fridge to keep our beers and food cool, and a tiny cooker. We didn't expect to get a room with a balcony and an open outlook for under £100 for two people for the week, but we did, and it was great!
The pool area was really lovely, clean and relaxing and it has a very welcoming feel - the owners were friendly and helpful, and keep the garden areas well maintained.
The local beach was a 5 minute walk away. We hired a car in Amoudara (we should have bargained harder as it was low season) and visited historical sites and beaches around Heraklion and across Crete, with lots of fun adventures on the way. Without the car it'd have been hard to have seen so much as Crete's huge.
I'd highly recommend the Imperial Studios to anyone who wants a relaxing break and isn't fussy about glamour or being in the thick of it 24/7.

My son and I spent I lovely relaxing week here recently and it was exactly what we needed. Pool great, service great, lovely people, lovely pool, nice gardens, home grown food and very clean. I can highly recommend this for a lovely peaceful break. Only 5mins walk to the beach and easy to get local transport to Heraklion. Nice short trip from airport and can highly recommend :-)

Small hotel in a semi-rural location, 5 minutes walk to the nearest restaurant.
Zac and Georgio are the perfect hosts, greeted with a free ice-cold beer on arrival.
Zac's food from the wood-burning oven not to be missed, drinks prices about what you’d expect in a hotel – slightly dearer than in resort.
The pool/bar/garden area are idyllic, evenings at the bar are a very friendly affair, the small number of guests means everyone gets to know each other.
Rooms are typically Greek/basic, we had an issue with mozzie infestation on arrival, but a plug-in from the local shop sorted this.
Rooms typically Greek/basic, but clean and comfortable. We had a broken kettle, which Georgio replaced immediately with one that only had an intermittent fault!
Plenty of quality restaurants and bars in Ammoudara – but please note, it is just one very long road. Recommend are the Windmill restaurant and Stella bar.
We had a look at the beach, but didn’t find much there.
For a change, half an hour walk will take you to the village of Gazi, where there are a couple of nice Greek bars and a busy gyros eatery.
Iraklion is a short bus ride away if you want something busier.
HAd a fantastic time and would return.

This was a fantastic place to stay in, it was quiet but the people and owners were lovely. It's ideal for families or those wanting a quiet get away. The owners treat you like family and the food was delicious. I would go back any time!

Having read previous reviews and travelled a lot, how people feel about these studios definitely depends on what you are looking for. There is no doubt that they are a low cost option and that the studios, corridors and stairways are kept very clean by Zac and Georgio's mum, Maria. There were five of us travelling together and we were made to feel very welcome - for most of the week we had the whole place to ourselves! We had picked what was clearly the last week of the season and really enjoyed the quiet roads and empty streets but it did mean that many restaurants were in the process of running down.

Zac and Georgio keep a very careful eye on the comings and goings of people from their CCTV centre behind the bar! The garden, pool and bar were fine - just a bit tired.

In making a decision on whether to stay here the low cost of the studios needs to be balanced against a number of other factors.
The views from the balconies aren't great - mainly across the road, partially finished buildings and small car/agricultural businesses to the north and east and mixed areas of fields and housing to the south and west. The almost constant barking of the large dog next door did get wearing at times.
The rooms themselves were kept very clean - bins emptied every day except Sunday. Although I think the pillows had seen better days! The furniture is all a bit tired. If the weather isn't good there is no table inside to on which to prepare or eat breakfast and no chairs to sit on inside unless you bring in the plastic balcony chairs.
Because we had the place to ourselves we made good use of the larger communal balcony at breakfast time and also at the end of the day.

As other reviewers have commented, there is no shower curtain around the shower tray and with just a hand held shower fitting, the small bathroom can get very wet. Towels were changed once during our week's stay.
There is a small fridge - which was perfectly adequate for what we wanted, one hot plate and a kettle. We asked Zac to cook for us on two occasions - once we had some very tasty grilled chicken and chips and on the second occasion lamb cooked in the clay oven with potatoes.
It is also worth noting that there is no lift to the first, second or third floors.

Ammoudara itself has a very nice beach and a long road which runs parallel to the beach where you can find bars, small shops etc. At the very far end of the road - about 2 miles away - is a large Carrefour which we used a lot. Ammoudara is a really good central location from which to explore the island. We hired a car for the week from 'Just Car Rentals' based at Iraklion airport and got a very good deal. Our favourite restaurant - was definitely 'Uncle George's Taverna' about 10 minutes walk away.
