Having read previous reviews and travelled a lot, how people feel about these studios definitely depends on what you are looking for. There is no doubt that they are a low cost option and that the studios, corridors and stairways are kept very clean by Zac and Georgio's mum, Maria. There were five of us travelling together and we were made to feel very welcome - for most of the week we had the whole place to ourselves! We had picked what was clearly the last week of the season and really enjoyed the quiet roads and empty streets but it did mean that many restaurants were in the process of running down.

Zac and Georgio keep a very careful eye on the comings and goings of people from their CCTV centre behind the bar! The garden, pool and bar were fine - just a bit tired.

In making a decision on whether to stay here the low cost of the studios needs to be balanced against a number of other factors.
The views from the balconies aren't great - mainly across the road, partially finished buildings and small car/agricultural businesses to the north and east and mixed areas of fields and housing to the south and west. The almost constant barking of the large dog next door did get wearing at times.
The rooms themselves were kept very clean - bins emptied every day except Sunday. Although I think the pillows had seen better days! The furniture is all a bit tired. If the weather isn't good there is no table inside to on which to prepare or eat breakfast and no chairs to sit on inside unless you bring in the plastic balcony chairs.
Because we had the place to ourselves we made good use of the larger communal balcony at breakfast time and also at the end of the day.

As other reviewers have commented, there is no shower curtain around the shower tray and with just a hand held shower fitting, the small bathroom can get very wet. Towels were changed once during our week's stay.
There is a small fridge - which was perfectly adequate for what we wanted, one hot plate and a kettle. We asked Zac to cook for us on two occasions - once we had some very tasty grilled chicken and chips and on the second occasion lamb cooked in the clay oven with potatoes.
It is also worth noting that there is no lift to the first, second or third floors.

Ammoudara itself has a very nice beach and a long road which runs parallel to the beach where you can find bars, small shops etc. At the very far end of the road - about 2 miles away - is a large Carrefour which we used a lot. Ammoudara is a really good central location from which to explore the island. We hired a car for the week from 'Just Car Rentals' based at Iraklion airport and got a very good deal. Our favourite restaurant - was definitely 'Uncle George's Taverna' about 10 minutes walk away.

The hotel has great hospitality; we were welcomed with a nice cold beer on our arrival and treated by first name basis from day one. You quickly get to know everyone else at the hotel especially in the evenings at the sort of communal meal time (excellent food). Most of the guest's were returns (people that came year on year to the same hotel as it's that good) however you never felt left out and everyone was warm and friendly. They have a free pool table and internet in the bar area, which is an extra bonus.

The pool area and bar are like an oasis on Crete with palm trees; excellent for a lazy day by the pool. The pool is really good and was cleaned regularly, so was the pool area and toilets. A big plus was you could always get a sun bed at anytime of the day. The bar was very good with lovely cold beer but was a little on the expensive side compared to the taverns down the road.

The accommodation however is about a 2 star, it was lovely clean but basic (reflected in the good price). The only annoying part was the water problem which came and went on its own accord, one guest described this as "quirky" I would say it was annoying; but the water never disappear for more than 5 minutes. We did cook when we were there but with only one hot plate and saucepan we were slightly limited to what we would do.

The hotel is an ideal base for exploring the island, with the bus stop at the end of the road to Heraklion and from there we took public buses to explore the whole island. Ammoundara is a nice resort lovely sandy beach which was never crowded when we were there. There are quite a few supermarkets and places to eat out.

So I would highly recommend the Imperial to anyone who wants a quiet get away in VERY friendly surroundings, or as a base to explore the island. But if you are looking for high quality accommodation so that you can sit in your room every day and stare at the walls in high comfort then the imperial is probably not for you.

Georgio is not a bad man lol... He is a gentleman and has an excellent sense of humour.. It is a family run business and does not have the frills of an established hotel. If you are travelling on a budget there is no-where better than the imperial. The room is cleaned every day very well by Georgios mother, the fridge and cutlery and pans are old, but very clean... If youre the type of people like us we never intended cooking there, it was a place to sleep and have a welcoming night cap... The back of the hotel is practically tropical with its palm trees and superb pool. Georgio learns your name name instantly and is always happy to greet you until at least 3.00am. He charges next to nothing for super air conditioning and there is a tv which we found a channel that has amazing British films on (with Greek subtitles) that was lovely to fall asleep to. The shower was cool (too hot there in the summer to be cold) but that is more to do with dodgy greek plumming than the place... Its position is great for Amoudara shopping, and the bus system in crete is excellent so a quick bus to the iraklion (so easy to do) has the rest of Crete at your disposal.... The only negative is when the transfer bus stops and says Imperial, dont be scared! The front is beirut, but walk around the back and you have an oasis of lovleiness.... I would visit again :)

Room Tip: They all have balcony's but there's really nothing to look at... Just Shut it up, keep the mozies out have a fun filled day .. Good if travelling with a non smoker so you can keep the smoke out.

I travelled to Crete for a one week cheap break with two friends and booked the Imperial based on the reviews I read on here. To be honest I understand why it gets good reviews as I think people are so swayed by the hospitality of the two owners (which is superb) and the friendly feel of the place. However if not swayed by this, the accomodation is VERY basic and only good if you get a very cheap deal. (We paid £50 each for a week.)

The three bed room was TINY. It had a double and single bed with just enough room to walk between the two. The kitchen was just a sink with a hob and kettle. There was no where to prepare food and even the balcony had just enough room for 2 chairs so the third person had to sit on the end of the bed and lean out onto the balcony! The photo of the 'spacious balcony' is actually the shared balcony that is on the side of the building.
The bathroom was pretty grim and the shower didn't drain properly and was unreliable in regards to water power and temperature.

The pool area was a definite plus point for the accomodation as it was clean and a good size and you can always get a sun lounger. The food at the bar is good and we didn't find the drink prices unreasonable - Georgio often rounds down food and drink prices if you are buying a few which is a bonus!

As mentioned by almost everyone the hospitality is great and you are treated by first name from day one. You also get to know everyone staying at the hotel as well which I'm sure is a plus for many people.

In regards to Amoudara, it is a very quiet resort and has little for teenagers or anyone wanting a nightlife. We enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere but may have struggled if staying for a fortnight.

Room Tip: If wanting a room that sleeps three, book two rooms instead.

We have just returned from these apartments and i have to say,we have had a exellent 2 weeks. Georgio and brother Zac are fantastic. On arrivel we were greeted at the entrance with a friendly smile and a warm handshake and lead to the bar for a free drink, which was lovely after a long flight. The studio's are what they say they are, studios not apartments. The pool area is lovely lots of grass that is cut regular and watered everyday so it is not dry at all. other places we have stayed at you have to be up really early to get a sunbed, not here though there is more than enough to go around. We did try the restaraunts in town but they could not compete with the food you get in the imperial .Especialy if georgio and zac have put the wood oven on in the garden, the food done in it was fantastic we had stiffado, kleftico, chicken and the lamb. We have been going to greece now for 5 years and I have to say the hospitality in these studios was exellent, it is what you expect to find in a family run greek place. We met some wonderfull people here and i have to say because it is a small place you do get to know everybody who is staying. We never run out of water either hot or cold whilst we we here and the rooms were cleaned daily exept a sunday by georgio and zac's mother maria who i think does an exellent job. Amoundora is a long road with bars and resturants on either side of it, If you want something lively amoundora is not for you. We used to go to a lovelly cocktail bar where you got popcorn and watermelon with every drink which only cost 3.70 euro, but she only ever charged 3.40 euro. I would say it takes you 5 min to get to the main street and 10 min to the beach. I can not wait to go back for a chilled out holiday where i no we will be looked after by a lovely family, Georgio Zac and Maria.
