Firstly, the good points:
Great location; the beach isn't too far away and there are a few FREE Wi-fi Hotspots on the beach if you are lucky if enough to find the right place.
People who run the hotel are very kind and welcoming.
The food in the evening time is amazing with a surprisingly great choice for vegetarians.
Now, the bad points:
The room is VERY basic.
You have to pay for drinks which, are around €2 each and air conditioning which, is, if I remember correctly, €5 per night! We, with a family of 3 ended up paying an extra €100+ for this!
The breakfast is very repetitive but just good enough to bear for the time we were there.
It's fairly noisy at night but bearable.

This is not to do with the hotel however, I thought I'd make people aware if they are thinking of travelling to Crete and are thinking that the excursions will be cheap... They most certainly will NOT be. Make sure you bring at least €350+ if, you want to go on a good few decent excursions and don't bother shopping round at the different Travel Offices they are ALL the same price... I just recommend going to the one closest to you.

In conclusion, I recommend this holiday if you are looking for a relaxing holiday, near the beach and willing to fork out a few extra quid here and there if you want a good time.

Firstly, a big 'thank you' to all who left a review here, without your comments we may not have booked, and what a treat we would have missed! Without a doubt, Kostas and Artemis made the holiday for us, they are so friendly and welcoming, I know we will stay in touch with them for years to come and definately we will return. The apartments are clean and all you need is there. Breakfast was toast and coffee, tea or juice, plentiful, and the Greek bread is divine! We ate at the taverna every night and we all enjoyed every meal. We had fish, chicken, beef and pork and it was all cooked beautifully, the salads are fresh and the feta cheese and tzadziki are nothing like what we have here, soo tasty!
The sea was a bit choppy whilst we were there, so the pool at the Albatros appts nxt door is fab, the food is lovely too, just have a drink or a snack and you can use the pool no problem. The owners, George and Maria are lovely people and we spent many a happy hour in their company.
The bus runs from the airport to Amoudara and it is 1.50 euro but if you're a bit wary of finding your way, a taxi is 25 euro, we did but got the bus on our return journey. Its the number 6 and you have to buy tickets before you get on, but there is a booth at the bus stop at the airport or the supermarket nxt to the appts in Amoudara.
The beach is lovely and only minutes away from the apartments. There are lots of bars and cafes if you feel like a change of scene, but it is fairly quiet and would be suitable for families or couples wanting a relaxing holiday. There is a lot more I could babble on about, but honestly, go and see for youself, we had a fantastic time and cant wait to return!

Room Tip: The air con is extra, but it was well worth it to get a good nights sleep.

My boyfriend and I went to Crete last June and we stayed at uncle George's apartment. We chose this destination as it was a last minute deal; cheap and cheerful.
The aim of our holiday for to relax and soak up some sun. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
It is not a lively area however we did go to a few cocktail bars in the evenings. During the day we relaxed on the beach which was lovely because it was very spacious and under crowded; very quiet.
The highlight of our holiday was the food served at the apartment, it was delicious! I love Greek food and their food was spot on. It was a set menu throughout the week so it was a different surprise every day and we were not disappointed. The morning breakfasts were standard, consisting of bread, ham, cheese and tomatoes. We found it quit repetitive and we found we were eating too much bread. So we would go to the pool bar next door for breakfast. The pool bar does not look like much however their breakfasts were really good. We had their omelette and it was fantastic, very generous with their fillings. These Greeks are amazing chefs!
In terms of excursions we went to a water park for the day and had a great time and we also went to the main city for some shopping and touring which was equally good.

I would recommend this destination if your holiday is based on relaxing.

Room Tip: My room was on a main road so a bit noisy however this personally was not an issue for us.

We loved our stay here. Kostas and Artemis made us feel so welcome and it felt like we were eating at our local friendly restaurant every night. The Greek food they served was so tasty and very well priced. The accommodation was very clean and a great standard for the price paid. The beach is just a short stroll down the street as well, which a fantastic bonus. By the way if you order a ouzo expect to get a large glass for your money! Book here and you will not regret it.

Lovely people and nice food served in a pleasant setting - beach is blue flag (about 1 min walk, behind taverna) - very choppy but the life guards keep a strict eye. although the premises do not themselves have a pool, there is a nice little pool bar next door. Half board was good value - different home-cooked, set meal each evening rather than self-serve buffet (e.g. chicken & chips, burgers, meat balls, gyros, mousakka, souvlaki ...preceded by salad, bread, dip and followed by watermelon) with the a la carte menu offering more extensive range of choices. Wine/beer/cocktails were inexpensive. Breakfast was Scandinavian continental (bread, jam, cheese, ham, tomato, egg mayonnaise) and served till quite late, with nearby bakeries offering pastries if you fancied a change or maybe an early start. Rooms are good sized, basic self-catering as is the norm in Crete, serviced weekly, but you can ask for extra towels if needed. Rooms at the front/higher up would have the best view i think, not sure if these cost extra. Again, as is the norm, air con is a little extra (it's breezy, so you might not need it) and later check out carries a fee. There are bars and a few clubs nearby with low key night-life, plus a cinema. Bus to airport is £1.50, very handy, took about an hour - Heraklion well worth a visit. A good mix of locals and various nationalities, plus beach sellers.

Uncle Georges is a traditional Greek Taverna with apartments over the top situated 150 yards from the beach (Ammoudara translates as long sandy beach). The owners Costas and Artemis are very friendly and the food (much of which is cooked by Costas' mother) is simply wonderful. If you book half-board you may not see a menu (unless you want to) but will be brought one of the dishes of the day. We stayed for 2 weeks and had something different for dinner every night without a single complaint. If you prefer, of course, you can order from the extensive menu.
Breakfast is generally bread, cheese, ham, jam, juice, coffee etc but if you prefer you can order a full English.
The rooms are basic but comfortable and are near enough to other bars and a nightclub (250 yards) to be accessible by an evening stroll but far enough away not to be upset by the noise.
Beach is nice and there are plenty of places to hire sunbeds etc.
This will be our 3rd time and we have met people who have been going there for 15 years. There is also a bus stop outside which goes directly to Heraklion for shopping and also the Airport for 1 euro 10 cents each way so don't pay £25 for a taxi.

We arrived after 11pm local time and we were met by Artemis (wife) who was smiling and very welcoming. She took us up to our 2 bed apartment and showed us the apartment right through. (Good English speaker). After a quick drink downstairs we retired to bed. The following morning we met Costas (the boss and husband to Artemis) again a very warm welcome and nothing was too much trouble and this was the theme throughout the whole of our 2 week stay. We were S/C and ate most of our meals in their Taverna downstairs and every meal was well presented and cooked beautifully which ended with the complimentary sweet and Raki.
Costas even took time out to run us 30 mins to a local monastary so I could light a candle in memory of my family.
We have been to the Greek islands on several occasions and to Crete 3 times now and we both agree this was by far one of the best relaxing holidays we have had.
The apartments/Taverna was clean and well presented and right in the middle of the village and everyone we encountered were very friendly and hospitable.
You can get the bus from the village to Heraklion port or even the airport for only 3 euros which annoyed us somewhat because the late hour we arrived it cost us 25 euro's ina taxi from the airport. The buses to Ammoudara is the No 6 should you need it from the airport and from Heraklion the bus stop is outsid the big cinema opposite the main square.
Yammas if you choose to go relax and enjoy.
