“Fantastic break”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 6, 2009

We originally booked for 5 nights at the Crosskeys but enjoyed our stay so much we extended it another 2 days. The welcome is great, the food plentiful and beautifully cooked - where else can you get a full english breakfast in the price! The rooms are cleaned and the towels etc. changed every day. Bob and Mary are lovely people who make you feel really at home. We look forward to staying there again

I agree with the last review. The place was unkempt, with small parking area filled with old cars and vans, (they run a car business also) lots of dead plants, and walls need painting. On entering the 'yard' we saw a man and his face did not change as he looked at us. My partner wound down the car window and said 'Hello, we are stying here tonight.' The man said 'Oh yeah, I will tell the wife.' No smile or welcome. The lady was very smart and smiley and welcoming. She showed us to our room upstairs which had a four poster bed and seemed a nice size with en-suite but after she left we noticed the en-suite was old, brown, there were dead spiders and cobwebs on the ceiling, we found out the next day that the shower was a trickle of boiling or cold water. The bedroom was full of scary dolls. I had to turn them over to stop them freaking me out. There were about 20 in all. There were also lots of doilies, knick-knacks, dusty fake 'flowers' and the furniture was old and stained. It looked like an eccentric old lady's boudoir. The bed was hard and squeeked when we 'moved'. The breakfast was nice, we had what we asked for, poached eggs toast and bacon. The packet sauces were sticky and were either very cheap or had been there ages. The cereal was in cheap old containers. Tea was nice. Everywhere in the place was too warm. We had to open our window in October. When we stepped outside to go, we chatted to the man and I noticed that he was very scruffy with dandruff and hairs all over his fleece. He had been wearing the same thing when he served us breakfast. Very strange weird man and place. Stay here if you have to. Its ok for one night if you need to be local the next morning. It cost £55 for the room. I think it was worth £30.

Booked for just the one night,"Thank God". On arrival I felt as if I was pulling into a Gypsies back yard. The accommodation looks nothing like the photos on the web-sites. Our room was on the ground floor overlooking the River bank. Sounds nice but inside is a different matter. Dolls with wierd faces everywhere, small TV with only 4 basic channels and battered and chewed up handset.
The bathroom..well that needs seeing to be believed. Brown bath and sink with a toliet seat that wouldn't stay up. Consequently for the males it required keeping hold of the toilet lid whilst doing a number one or having the feel of the wooden lid resting on your back whilst sitting on the toilet. Also very cramped.
On a positive side the owner Mary did seem very friendly and offered to move us to another room within the main part of the house, however there must of been about 50 dolls scattered everywhere including on the bed. (Not everybody's taste)
