“A wonderful place in midst of beautiful nature”
Reviewed November 27, 2010

Lago Grey is a couple of kilometers down a gravel road from the visitors center of Torres del Paine National Park. It's location is fantastic, isolated at the edge of a large lake, with a striking view on the lake, the Paine mountains, and the glacier Grey. We had a room with view on those three sceneries and enjoyed that a lot. Would recommend to go for one of their recently completed new rooms (room numbers 900 and upwards) that have great view and large windows. It's isolation forces you to eat at the hotel, which offers solid food and good prices. However, we would have liked to have more choice than between two main courses. Still, the restaurant offers a stunning view and very good wines (in bottles as well as open).
We decided to take the boat trip to the Glacier (reserve early, we did it the night before and could only join the 7.30am trip), even if its cost is at USD 85 a bit steep. It's fully worth it, we enjoyed three hours sailing, of which more than half very close to the glacier (much closer than, e.g., you can get to the Perito Moreno glacier).

The location is stunning, overlooking Lago Grey with a view down the lake towards the glacier at the other end. The mountains were hidden by low cloud when we arrived so it was thrilling when the cloud lifted the following day. Because of the remote location there's no TV or mobile phone reception (the internet works from the bar though) but this just adds to the tranquility of the place.

Meals in the restaurant were very good. The restaurant is a good place to linger and enjoy the scenery. On the other hand we ordered sandwiches in the bar one lunchtime and they were very slow to arrive and when they did come the order wasn't right. There isn't really anywhere else to eat though. The staff looked a little overstretched.

The room was fairly basic but comfortable - log cabin style with raised floor, and they faced away from the lake so there was no view from the window. I was awoken one night by foxes scraping under the floor (the Grey fox is a common sight around the hosteria)! The underfloor heating in the bathroom was nice.

The boat trip was memorable as it was the first of the Patagonian glaciers that I'd visited. It takes you up close to the ice wall - a memorable day out. On the down side you're reliant on the elements so there isn't much to do when the weather closes in.

We stayed 2 nights with the intention of taking the Lago Grey Navigation. The boat being cancelled was just the icing on the cake of our disappointments here. The room was very drafty...we stuck a towel in front of the door to cover the large gap letting the cold air in. The breakfast consisted of mostly desserts. There is a set lunch and dinner menu that is VERY pricey and does not cater to vegetarians. We ended up having sandwiches in the bar for lunch. It was necessary to run the shower for 10 minutes before receiving any hot water. There is no TV and internet was only available in the bar area...but the clients attempting to access it were having no luck. Would not recommend staying here without having a car to get around park.

We recently stayed at Lago Grey and found the lodge quite comfortable but do not expect too much luxury. The rooms are a bit on the small side, have no views, no TV and no fridge, mini-bar or coffee-making facilities. The room and bathroom is very clean and comfortable considering that the Torres del Paine National Park is extremely remote. Dinners are served in the dining room and are quite good, but you're limited to two choices of main course and meals are rather expensive. The menu is on a two day cycle and repeats every second day. The view from the dining room and lounge area is stunning and the free internet (only available from the lounge area as the signal does not travel to the rooms) is a welcome bonus given that mobile phones do not work in the park (satellite only). There is absolutely no fuel after Puerto Natales 150km away, so bring extra if you want to drive around. The staff were quite helpful and friendly, but a tour guide should be available to explain hiking and excursion options. We were basically on our own and had to do the research ourselves. Unfortunately the boat to the glaciar was not operating in the winter, so that was quite disappointing. On balance a comfortable lodge, but a bit overpriced at approx. US$250 a day low season, possibly the reason that there were only about 8 guests at the time we stayed here.

Me and my wife were very disapointed by the two night that we spent at the hosteria lago grey during our winter trip there.
First of all when we arrived they gave us a room with no heater (it was 0°C outside!), so we refused, the guy of the reception told us that the hotel was full or the hotel was almost empty (only 8 clients, what a lier!),we insisted and finally we had another room.
Let's talk about the menu (45 $ per person): awfull(no choice and the food was discuting!), let's forget the breakfats composed with the rest of the desserts of the day before.
The only good thing:the view...

We were looking forward to this hotel and hired a car in Puerto Natales for the trip. The drive through the park is awesome, if a bit daunting in a sedan.
We had booked and paid for a glacier view room but we give a room out the back with no view. Had to insist and got moved the following night to the right room but they weren't happy about it.
My wife was born in Chile and on account of my not speaking Spanish she did most the talking. I don't know if it is just the chauvinistic nature of the people or what but we got much better service after I took over did the talking as a knock about Aussie. Maybe it was being an Aussie or maybe it was the few carefully placed tips to the bar man and general service guy but after that we started getting good service including the window seat at the restaurant overlooking the glacier in the distance.
The walks around the lake edge are cool and a good view. The trip to the glacier was also good but if you’re intending on going to Calafate you will get to see even better glaciers (Perito Moreno).
Overall the setting/location was the best thing about the hotel and because of that I would recommend it just remember to tip the right people.

Lago Grey Hosteria was a fantastic place to stay. The setting is stunning directly in front of the lake with the glacier the far end.
The food was very good both in the restaurant and the bar.
The staff were friendly and most were helpful.
One point just to mention though – do not be mistaken by thinking that staying at the Hosteria gives you any priority when going out on the boat to the glacier. Our experience was that if they have a lot of non-guest and the boat is over booked they strongly encourage you to take the next boat( when you have an audience of those non-guest who think they will miss out if you don’t change) . This is fine until you’re told that the next boat is cancelled! Which is what happened to us, only as there were several of us they did decide to take the boat out in the end.
Having said that we really enjoyed our stay and would happily go again.
