Lago Grey Hosteria and Navegacion
Reviewed March 18, 2013

We stayed in this Hosteria by default one night as the only way we could arrange to do the boat tour of the glacier and then make our bus reservation the next day. The hotel itself is worn, a relic from an earlier time (its denomination among Chilean hotels downgraded from 'hotel' to 'hosteria'). Rooms cost $300 and up, and range from adequate to awful. With two exceptions (the fine bar man and a woman in the shop) the staff were impolite, insolent and eager NOT to offer help with anything. The breakfast buffet was meager, the eggs runny; we had better meals while hiking and staying in refugios, and far far better service. They have a captive audience, but only one choice for dinner each night, which runs $50 U.S. per person (not including wine); we ate sandwiches in the bar instead. Though you are staying there, they charge extra ($40.00 U.S. extra per party) for transport to and from. You are paying for location, and location only: the views of the Grey Glacier and lake are beautiful. Next to the quality of other hotels in Torres del Paine, however, this is a waste of money and time, even a bit of an outrage. To charge this much for this little is simply criminal.

This hotel has the most amazing views from some of their rooms. You see icebergs and snow covered mountains while you lay on your bed or take a shower! The food in the restaurant is mediocre but the location is spectacular! If you are staying there, make a point to take a walk along the lake and then around the island that is in front of the hotel, It has a nice trail which brings you very close to the icebergs.

Room Tip: ask for a room with the glacier view.

This hotel (hosteria) is in a beautiful setting. Even from the bedroom window we were looking out on the Lago Grey - watching the blue icebergs floating around in the lake and not wanting to close our drapes on the view. In addition, we had a real king size bed and the bathroom floors were heated. Overall the room accommodations very much exceeded my expectations!

Room Tip: The room with a king size bed and view to the lake is what we were assigned. It was quite lovely!

We stayed at the Hotel Lago Grey for two nights. It is expensive but if you want to stay in the park, a great choice. We opted for a room with a view of the lake which we were very glad to have selected once we arrived. The room was very nice, large, pretty view and had a very nice bathroom. The hotel has a nice bar area with a view as well.

The dinners were a tad noisy as busloads of tourists are brought to the hotel for dinner. But the food was good even if it was expensive (as everything is in Torres del Paine).

We had rented a car to drive the park over several days, and if you do the same, be aware that there are no gas stations in the park so fill up before you get there.

HIGHLIGHT of the trip - The cruise to Glacier Grey. The boat is small enough to get up close to the glacier which is huge. We've seen glaciers in Alaska and Iceland and by far, Glacier Grey is the most impressive one so far. Definitely do this if in the area. The Glacier is stunning, very blue against the massive mountains and the grey of the lake. Apparently there are glacier trekking trips as well which we didn't get to do but would have been impressive.

Torres del Paine is a beautiful park. Go prepared to hike as there are many trails. The wind is fierce so wear a windbreaker. One of our most memorable hikes was to the base of the Towers - four hours in and four hours back out, obviously. Bring your own drinks and food. The hike gets quite difficult in the last couple of hours as you head up to the view spot. The only way to get there is to hike but it is worth it, just incredible. You could do the first part of the hike on horseback if so inclined. We did the hike without a guide, just followed the map and signs which are well marked. There will be a lot of other hikers so if you need any help, someone is going to be around. Bring your walking sticks and cameras!

Room Tip: Stay in a room with a view of the lake.

We stayed at this location. It reminded me a bit of the cabins we stayed in as a kid in Yosemite. Nothing fancy and no amenities beyond a bar and restaurant. But the showers were hot and the toilets worked fine....two essentials. But the best part of all is that you are staying in a beautiful national park and you avoid the long drive to and from each day that many visitors make. Keep your expectations low and you will not be disappointed. The park is exeptional.

Torres del Paine is a beautiful place to visit but Hotel Lago Grey was awful. The front desk and expedition staff were rude and not at all helpful. When we arrived we were given a brochure of the different expeditions and told to pick what we wanted - no explanations given past the one line description . None of our questions were answered in a friendly or helpful manner. We managed to take wonderful hikes on our own and one to glacier grey with a company outside of the hotel- which was fantastic!
The day we left, we checked out of the hotel then waited for our ride to the airport right by the front desk. 30 minutes after arriving at the airport a woman approached us with 2 policemen claiming we left the hotel without paying our bill! We showed them the receipt but she said it wasn't paid. We don't speak much Spanish and they spoke no English but finally figured out there was confusion with our credit card, which we cleared up immediately. What we couldn't figure out is why no one from the front desk said anything to us while we waited for our ride, why this woman brought two policemen with her or why they didn't just check with the travel agent who booked the hotel. It was upsetting to end a trip to one of the most beautiful places in the world in such an unpleasant way. I definitely don't recommend this place.
