Lago Grey Hosteria and Navegacion
Reviewed December 22, 2012 via mobile

The hotel is not bad, but definitely not immaculate. Prices are high, food is average. Wi-fi is sooooooooo slow that it's impossible to use Skype or browse Internet without being annoyed by waiting for pages to download.
The staff is nice and welcoming, though, and the rooms are spacious.

Lago Grey is beautifuly situated with a view of the Lago Grey glacier in Torres del Paine park in Chile.
The place is calm and romantic. Hikes and boat trips are reccommended.
The hotel is not served by the regular bus routes.
The hotel provides transders at a cost, but transfers have to be prearranged and are costly.

Room Tip: The better rooms are the 800-900 section.

I am writing this review as I'm laying in bed looking out of the floor to ceiling window at the beautiful view of the snowcapped mountains, the lake with icebergs floating in it and people in the distance who look like penguins walking on the beach. Due to the flu we stayed an extra night at this hotel. If you have to be confined to a room/hotel this is the place to do it. The staff is wonderful from the front desk to Carlos in the bar and Samuel in the restaurant. The staff has the attitude everyone in the hospitality business should; they are willing to do whatever they can to accommodate the guest's request.

We drove a tiny compact car here and the road was fine. It was a mix of gravel and pebbles but not a problem, just take your time. Upon arriving, the hotel doesn't seem like much but once you walk in the lobby area you realize this is a beautiful place with picturesque views everywhere.

For this hotel and most in the area we found that using booking.com ( accessible via trip advisor) is where you will get the best price. The standard room on the hotel's site for our dates were about what we paid for the superior. The superior has the lake views. I highly recommend this. The shower is nice and the bathroom floor is heated. There is a safe, wifi and bathrobes but no tv or alarm clock. The bed is cozy and comfortable.

Food: They do not sell snacks, water or toiletries in the hotel gift shop, just apparel. The restaurant has a buffet breakfast included in the room price. Lunch and dinner are 4 course set menus with your choice between 2 main courses. The price is about $ 50 usd per person BUT you dont have to order the entire menu. For example for dinner we had 2 bottles of water, 1 glass of wine, 2 soups and 2 main courses for a total of $63 usd.

A comfortable and scenic place to spend a night or two while in the park. Unfortunately not much else to do within walking/hiking distance once you visit the lake and glacier grey.

The views, the hikes, the restaurant, the service, the boat ride to Glacier Gray all outstanding It was a delightful and adventurous 2 days. We were with a group so I cannot speak to the prices.
I might say the views were priceless.
We stayed in half a dozen hotels in Patagonia and this one was the best all round. Let's put it this way. Since we stayed in Grand Canyon National Park a few years ago, I realize the National Park accommodations in almost any country are behind the times, with few exceptions. Generally, I just lower my expectations when we plan a trip to any national park Lago Grey is superior to the majority.

Room Tip: I guess they have very different prices, but honestly the lodge/bar is an awesome place to relax and...

The Hotel Lago Grey was fantastic. Located within the beautiful Torres del Paine National Park, the hotel is located on Lago Grey with a view of the Lago Grey Glacier. The rooms are spacious with a modern decor and beautiful bathrooms. One wall of our room was glass and we could see the lake with icebergs floating. The hotel restaurant provides meals and has a nice breakfast buffet and bar.

Room Tip: Be sure to ask for a room with a lake view.

This hotel sports what has to be one of the most spectacular views in the world. You can do most everything this location has to offer in a half day (or Day trip); I wouldn't recommend staying here overnight.

Here is what I would recommend:
Start with Lunch and take in the view. Next venture out onto the deck facing the lake and down the steps and follow the trail to the left which takes you up the river where you will end up at a parking lot for the main trails. Take the trail out to the lake and follow it out across the bridge and down to the lake, follow the beautiful shore to the right where there is a very nice loop hike around the peninsula. Go back to the parking lot and take the trail that heads off to the right. There is a sign that says something about needing a guide on the trail but I ignored that nonsense since we payed 80 bucks to get in the park. Take the trail to the camp site, or further if you have time, then head back. It is another very nice trail where we came upon a hunting condor. You have now done just about everything there is to do in the immediate vicinity in a few hours; if you are after glaciers definitely go to Glacier National park in Argentina.

Here is my rating breakdown:

Value: 1 star: The room was motel quality but with 'warm' water and the radiator gave off just enough heat to dry my socks off overnight. So it was very cold. There are better rooms but I didn't bother inquiring on the upgrade cost.

Service 1 Star:
Bartender -4 Stars: Grumpy, impatient, condescending, and generally unpleasant. Very put off by this person.

Waiter 5 Stars: Very attentive and friendly.

Location 5 Stars

We stayed three night in lago grey hotel. The hotel rooms are clean, but be carefull, there are two types of rooms.

The cheaper rooms, standards are without view, small, but definatly clean, a little bit outdated interior but the beds are very comfortable. The last night we upgraded to a deluxe toom, and yes this is a excellent upgrade, we were on the second floor of the new part of the hotel and had a perfect view of the glacier. It is definatly worth the extra money. Also the rooms have modern en luxe interior. From the shower you still have a view on the glacier.

The boattrip that they offer is expensive but worth your money. They go very close to the glacier, you also get pisco to stay warm. Also our guide was nice and helpfull with taking a lot of pictures of us together with the glacier. I would recommend this boatride instead of the one in puerto natales, because there you will feel like livestock for hours. This smalltrip gives you everything that you expect from visiting a glacier.
