We were recent guests at Explora Patagonia with our young children ages 7 and 3.

The views from Explora were jaw-dropping! It was like being in a 3-D movie! Explora's location is also unbeatable- right within Torres Del Paine National Park.

The staff at Explora including the manager Laura did everything within their means to accommodate our family of young children. We received a complementary upgrade to a suite, for one of the excursions our family had its own guide, and last but not least many of our meals were room-serviced to our room as we were hesitant to go down into the dining room in case our kids were too loud. Also, the chef was gracious enough to prepare meals for our youngest as per our request.

When we finally did venture out to the dining room with the kids, many of he guests that had been on excursions with us told us that we should just come down with the kids as the atmosphere was pretty informal.

When we saw it for ourselves we realized it was really laid back in the bar area and so many of the guests were so sweet to the kids. Also, Explora was happy to serve us dinner in the downstairs dining room where there were a lot fewer guests than the upstairs dining room which was pretty packed.

Overall, we had a pretty fantastic stay. We were coming from Awasi, Atacama so had been utterly spoilt and the Awasi experience had been superlative in every way. However, we were pleased with Explora too and especially the amount they did to make our family with young children feel included in everything.

Thank you! We will remember our time at Explora for a long time to come and we do hope that we can visit the majestic Torres Del Paine National Park again!

For the price, our stay should have been perfect, but . . . The location is awesome and worth the long drive from Punta Arenas. The views from the lodge are incredibly beautiful. The rooms are quite comfortable and the housekeeping staff kept them spotless. That's the good part. Otherwise, the food is decent but lacking in variety and inconsistent in preparation. For example, risotto was the staple at 4 of the 7 lunch/dinner meals. I couldn't get a hard-boiled egg with a cooked center at breakfast. One of our party, who is about 5 ft. tall and maybe 90 lbs., complained about the portion size given the energy required for some of the hikes. The wait staff was, at best, well-meaning -- but was mostly inattentive and brought things out at the wrong time to our group at several meals. I had to get my own coffee refills at breakfast because the server never checked to see if I wanted more than 1 cup. Our promised sandwiches for the van ride back to Punta Arenas never came despite 3 requests. While the guides were great, there was insufficient information about the hikes, not enough variety (by the 3rd day my only choice was horseback riding) and the promised flexibility and agility in customizing or responding to requests proved to be mostly a promise, not reality. When our group requested a particular half-day hike they refused and offered only one that had already been scheduled the previous 2 mornings. Then they added hikes later after the presentations that nobody had been informed about. I think most of these issues were really a management problem. The manager was not very engaged with the guests and I felt her interest was more in entertaining her daughter than supervising operations and hosting guests. Given the very high price of staying there, I expected more. It gets an extra star simply because of the stunning location.

From start to finish this was one of the most amazing trips I have ever been on. When I arrived in Punta Arenas, Explora took over and escorted us to the van to take us to the hotel. I am an art history and architecture major and the hotel is simply stunning. I really loved going in the "winter" season since it was I think low season and when I got the hotel I felt so well taken care of. The food/wine and high end bar was a great finish to long days of hiking and exploring. I think for my first few days, we didn't see any other tourists. I felt like it was not just a vacation but truly a spiritual and close to nature experience. The guides at Explora go through a very intensive training program and I looked forward to meeting with them every night to plan the next day's activities. It is one of the most remote places on earth and when you are there, you feel like a special guest. I have traveled to probably 40 countries and am a very savvy and experienced high end traveler so I expect a lot. Explora did not disappoint.

I love the location this hotel is situated in. Doesn't get much better than this. Panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, including Torres Del Paine and the glaciers. Service is good, although one suggestion is more comprehensive spa treatment. I was genuinely shocked to find out that they only offered massage and pool in their "spa". Also, their wifi is dreadfully slow. Don't plan on doing any real "work" here. Otherwise, the hotel is excellent. Hotel staff and guides are extremely knowledgeable and friendly, and will for sure service you with every need. We were especially impressed by the free and prompt transport service from Calafate from Argentina and later to Punta Arenas. Very convenient and least painful bus trip I've taken.

If you go on one of the longer hikes, one of the things we found so lovely was that the guide/staff brought special lunch all the way up a 10 hr hike. We were able to enjoy hot soup while freezing at the base camp of the towers. It's a small detail but totally made our day.

We were also able to join in for the special BBQ they held, which included 2 fully roasted lamb racks, as well as a variety of roasted local food. It was a very nice surprise and the food was just superb.

Overall, if you are not convinced by the review, look at the pictures. There's not really good ways to describe what you see, except to see it in picture, and of course to experience it in person. Good luck and I hope you visit one day!

Room Tip: Location, location, location. Doesn't get any better than this.

Once you survive the long van ride in from the airport, you are warmly greeted by the superb, professional staff. The views from the lodge will take your breath away, and you have many choices of half day or full day hiking and horseback excursions that range from fairly easy to highly challenging. It will be windy, so bring a neck gaiter, wind protection and sunscreen. There is also a nice pool and hot tub area, and of course you can get a massage.
I would say this is not a good choice if you have mobility issues or want evening activities. The food is delicious, but if you have special dietary needs, it would be best to discuss them before you arrive. I am sure the logistics of getting food in are tricky. The lodge is a bit too formal for rambunctious young kids, but would be excellent for families with teens who like the outdoors. Even the "easy" hikes have need of hiking poles (they have some, but better to bring your own). The horses are superb, and if you are a strong rider, you can gallop across the Chilean pampas like a gaucho. They also offer easy trail rides for inexperienced people. The best part about Salto Chico is the staff. The guides are unfailingly cheerful, enthusiastic and eager to make your visit so rich and rewarding that you will want to come back. This is a very special place.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the waterfall are noisier than rooms facing the mountain views.

The Explora offers a holiday plus.

The not so good news is the five and a half hour journey to and from the hotel from Punta Arenas. Stops and refreshments are provided along with the half expected stops to changes punctured tyres! Half of the journey is on unfinished gravel surfaces and even with SUV vehicles comfort is not thing that springs to mind.

The journey is well worth it with exceptional scenery.

The range of full and half day options included in the arrangement are discussed with the guides each evening and there are no concerns that the needs of any quest cannot be met.

My wife was extremely impressed by the standards and safety arrangements and equipment for the horse riding sessions.

The food was of a good consistent standard and service was equally good, prompt and attentive.

Our room facing away from the main lake provided a good view to the lower lake and was of a good size with a large comfortable bed.

Would we go again? Yes Please!!!

Our lodge is located right in the heart of the extraordinary Torres del Paine National Park in southern Patagonia. Situated on a 3-hectare (7.4-Acre) site, the design borrows certain organic forms from the landscape itself, adapting to it with simple elegance. It was designed to create a dialogue with its environment, putting human beings in touch with the sublimity of their surroundings. For travellers, the lodge provides the welcome surprise of comfort in a remote area.
