We visited the hotel after 2 weeks traveling around Bariloche, Ushuaia and Calafate. The gorgeous trip ended in this hotel which was the cherry on the cake. What an extraordinary location. We were lucky with the weather and were able to do several incredible hikes and even rode horses. It's super windy but it adds to the fun. The tour guides (Gino, Thomas, Camila...) are AMAZING, the rooms cozy with incredible views, the food, spectacular, the best duck I ever had. Also had sorbet of my favorite food, cheremoya, i died and went to heaven. everything about it is just perfect. I know, it's expensive but what do you work so hard for?. Treat yourself and go.

Dear traveler,

Thank you so much for your very kind and enthusiastic review.

We love being called the “cherry on the cake” – who wouldn’t?

I also agree with your leaning towards cherimoya, which Mark Twain called the "the most delicious fruit known to men." The fruit is fleshy, sweet, white in color, with a sorbet-like texture, which gives it its other name, custard apple.

The trip to the Hotel Salto Chico is not easy, but it is well worth the trip. Upon arrival, we were swept away on our first Exploration. We were told it was easy, but it involved some climbing and my group was a bit older and, shall we say less athletic, than many there. Still the walk was good and gave us a very good idea of what was to come. As we were told, the weather is never predictable and there are no flat walks. Still, with that introduction and the intro that evening, we were all able to find activities that suited us. (Ask if you have any doubt!) They were willing to put together a walk for our specific interest (birding) and were always willing to work with us on our whims.
They told us that employees would be around at 7:30 to tell us about the next days' Explorations and we were always able to find somebody to talk to us and never found an exploration full. We took one afternoon off and enjoyed the beautiful setting. The food was great. The people amazingly patient and friendly. It is not a place to sit, but to get out into the environment. Only complaint is that wifi was very slow and temperamental.

Room Tip: We chose the second level c de paine rooms, but the salto chico room we saw was lovely. Rooms close...

we visited explora from dec. 21-27, 2012. from the moment we entered the doors and were greated by the hotel's manager, William, to the time we left, explora was nothing but fantastic. the lodge, resturant and rooms are lovely but nothing can compare to the natural surroundings of the locale. it will truly take your breath away.
every single member of the staff was attentive and friendly from the reception staff, dining room staff, so ably overseen by the delightful Rosario, guides and drivers to the gauchos who so ably guided our horse back rides.
the hikes vary from easy to difficult, as do the horse back rides. the scenery on every hike or ride is beautiful, each filled with majestic views of mountains and lakes. on some hikes you see herds of guanaco - a cousin to the llamas, families of rhea - which resemble small ostriches and condors.
it's not easy to get to explora but once you get there, the time it took to get there will be a faint memory.

Room Tip: all of the rooms face mountains, lakes or waterfalls.

This was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for me. The hotel was fabulous and the views spectacular. Should be fit to truly enjoy this trip, as the hikes can be very strenuous. Expect every type of weather you can imagine, all in ONE day -- wind, rain, sunshine, fog, snow, and wind, wind, wind. Needed to plant my walking stick into the ground so as not to blow over! They say you haven't experienced Patagonia if you haven't experienced the wind. Horseback riding, photo excursions, and all levels of hiking from easy to strenuous. Terrific guides -- all very yound and fit. Many excursions, all included in the hefty price of this trip. Do go -- views of Torres del Paine were spectacular!

Room Tip: Try to get a room facing Torres del Paine -- the morning light makes the mountains glow in a golden...

Dear traveler,

Thank you so much for your very kind review.

As you’ve very correctly pointed out, located in the heart of Patagonia, at a low altitude and close to the ocean, Torres del Paine National Park has a microclimate with mostly pleasant daytime temperatures. In the summer, the average daytime temperatures range from 54ºF to 75ºF and in the winter from 36ºF to 61ºF. I would agree with you that it is important to point out that the weather is unpredictable throughout Patagonia, both in Chile and Argentina. The changeable winds can make it seem as though all four seasons of the year have occurred in one day.

The Explora lodge is really at the end of the world, but the journey is definitely worth it. Somehow the owners of the lodge were able to build in the incredibly beautiful Torres Del Paine national park, and the views from the lodge are truly unbeatable. I was lucky that while there we had almost perfect weather, and that made the trip even more enjoyable. The lodge is nice, but without the location does not wow on it's own. There is a restaurant within the lodge where you have your meals, and the food here is consistently good, especially considering how far the produce has to travel.
Every day a guest can choose to do half day activities (offered both in the morning and the afternoon) or full day activities all of which range in difficulty. You're really choosing between the option of hiking or horseback riding, although a boat ride is occasionally offered. I hiked almost everyday, and was so blown away each time. Each hike is beautiful, and the guides are quite knowledgable, as well as bilingual. I would say that I was surprised by the number of people on the trails. While explora does a good job of keeping 8 or less guests with a guide, there are many other tourists on the trails, which is not what i was expecting. We stayed for 6 days which felt like the perfect amount of time for us, and did full day hikes everyday except for one. I had a really lovely experience, and would certainly recommend it to other people.

Dear traveler,

Thank you so much for your very kind and detailed review.

I am interested to read that you’ve chosen a 6-day stay Christmas and/or New Year Program, which I would agree is a good length of stay to see a fair amount of the Torres del Paine park and what explora has to offer. As you probably know, our minimum stay is 4 nights and at times we have many inquiries for less than 4 nights, which we advise against. It isn’t for selfish purposes that explora encourages a minimum-stay of 4 nights, but we truly believe that is the “minimum” time required to enjoy the explora travel experience and understand what our way of traveling is all about.

I love the outdoors -- fresh air, scenic vistas, lakes, mountains ranges, animals, unique finds such as glaciers and a mountain or two to climb or trek about. But I hate sleeping in tents, inclement weather, mosquitoes; so I love to trek but stay at nice hotels -- the Explora succeeds at all levels. I got all the nature I could take in (even the view from my bedroom window was awe inspiring) and still was able to sleep well, eat and drink well and meet many a new friend.

One or two notes for management (not one of these should discourage your going here ) -- worst front door entry experience of any hotel, screen the garage area off & second was food quality fluctuations, keep to your standards

Dear traveler,

Thank you so much for your very kind and constructive review.

Allow me to point our explora’s founder’s vision, which highlights to key goals for the company: “First, the explora experience had to do justice to what already existed and not follow the path of traditional tourism, which often fails to recognize Chile’s appeal. Chile has very special characteristics which are best appreciated by experienced travelers who are able to discern the uniqueness of its environment. Second, we decided to offer those same aspects of Chile in the very way in which we personally enjoyed them: that is, combining interaction with nature and local cultures with relatively demanding physical activity, which is necessary if you want to see the best of what the country has to offer.”

As for your constructive criticism, thank you to taking the time to let us know how we can improved. We have already addressed the matters internally.

Just returned from Hotel Salta Chico, and am happy to report that it lived up to the rave reviews family and friends have given it over the years. The view from the hotel is unbelievable (be sure to book a room facing the Torres del Paine if at all possible). The staff and excursions were really top notch - something for everyone from hard core hikers to birders or more casual walkers. Staff make it very clear that they are there to make every guest's stay special, and they really go above and beyond to cater to a very diverse array of interests and fitness levels. The food and wine were good (I'd offer a 4 in this department rather than a 5). The bar is open from noon on, and there is a lively happy hour before dinner.
