“Great base for trekking the W”
Reviewed December 12, 2010

Refugio Torres Central is a classic trekking hostel that manages to have a great cozy atmosphere. The location of the refugio is ideal, beautiful and near the trekking path up to the Mirador Torres and into the W.
The good:
- great staff, very helpful
- very atmospheric dining area with bar area as well, very nice for relaxing after a trek
- hot water
- delicious pisco sour happy hour
The bad:
- bathrooms get dirty at night
- rooms are open at the top, so you can hear everyone in the hall. This means no sleeping until everyone quiets down
- the lights are turned off at night, be prepared to stumble to the bathroom if you need to go after midnight
All in all a pleasurable stay with good value for money. If you do not want something more chic, take out your credit card and stay in the very overpriced hotel down the road.

we have been two nights in this refugio while making the w trekking. compared to other refugios on this trek this is clean and the food is very tasty. As the rooms are simple and there are 6 beds per room it's quite expensive, but still better then the hotel las torres. we talked to friends which have been in the hotel and they decided to come to the refugio for dinner as it's more tasty than there.

We stayed here for a night after climbing up to Las Torres and before walking across to Paine Grande. It's well located with the shuttle bus meeting the bus from Puerto Natales ($2500) and dropping you off outside. The hostel has a nice but very expensive bar. Rooms "sleep" 6 but have no internal roof so you get the noise from every other dorm and the bar. The heating is on full blast until 11ish then it gets biting cold with the thin blankets provided proving completely insufficient. Meals are ok although service is patchy. Should be about a quarter of the price it charges.

Fantastico Sur owns most of the refugios of Torres del Paine.
There's no choice in this part of the park. As you have to stay at the refugio if you're not planing to do the W, you have to be aware that there's no heaters in the rooms.
The showers and the bathrooms are really dirty.
When you get to the hotel, you fell that you're not welcome at all.
All the questions we've asked to the staff were not answered or we were given bad answers.
I'll definitely not recommend this place, as it's really expensive for what it is.

The accommodation in Torres del Paine is horrendously expensive and this is a great budget option. We stayed in the main hostel block and found everything very warm and cosy. The main dining room is huge and the food we had was better than anywhere else on the W. We also looked forward to pisco sours every night after our trek (the bar is well stocked!!). The downside is the rooms, which are partioned off rather than having solid walls (although the partitions are high). This means you can hear people chatting in other rooms...so take earplugs. To be honest, this is part and parcel of staying in a hostel. The bathrooms were spotless with plenty of hot water. I spent ages trying to research if you could drive to this hostel from other refugios and the good news is you can (we did it from Paine Grande Mountain Lodge). You need a map. Recommended as a good base for the towers hike.

There is probably not much point in writing a review of this place as if you are doing the W you don't have a lot of choice of where you will stay, but that is probably also what the owners rely on in not really bothering to provide a particularly good service at this hostel and charging a fair whack for a bed. We have stayed in quite a few similar places that have been much better. The beds and showers are OK. It gets really cold at night and ironically this was the only time in the trip that I needed my thermals! The food is not great and the worst part is breakfast which is a total fight for food! It is totally disorganised and chaotic with customers having to stand at the serving hatch to try to get anything to eat and it practically coming out one piece of toast at a time to serve around 100 people. The other places on the W are better organised. It also has lots of really big tour parties staying and they are prioritised and you are made to feel like a bit of an inconvenience if you are not part of these big groups. If I did it again, I'd walk up to Chilenos on the first day and skip this place - it's too big and impersonal.

We stayed at this Refugio for two nights during our 5-day visit of Torres del Paine NP. As we didn't want to trek the whole W we wanted to combine accommodation at two ends of the park, doing only day trips from each location.
Although we are not big fans of communal bathrooms and shared bedrooms with bunk beds we absolutely loved this place. It is quite rustic but fits great into the area. The best advantage is that it puts you right in the middle of the park - the trail up to the Torres base starts a couple of meters away from the refugio. Most of the guests were starting their W trek from here.
The facilities of the refugio are very clean and there was no problem using the bathrooms - plenty of space for everyone. Hot water is always available, even during the day when everyone is out trekking. You can book only a bed and bring your own sleeping bag or you can rent blankets and sheets in the refugio (we did this). Also, the canteen provides three meals per day as well as packed lunches. You should order in advance - we had full board, which means breakfast and dinner in the refugio and a packed lunch to go. Some people were complaining about the food but we found it perfectly ok - freshly prepared, natural ingredients and after a full day of trekking it tastes just great. After all, the first town is 150 km away and they have to transport everything in and out of the park.
The only disadvantage are the shared bedrooms. There are 4 rooms at each of the two tracts of the building. Each room has bunk beds for 6 persons, but the walls of the rooms do not reach up to the ceiling so you basically have 24 people sleeping in one big space - separated only by low walls. Should you get "lucky" and share the "room" with some loud guests after a couple of drinks this could be a problem so bring earplugs to be on the safe side. There was none such guests during our stay so this didn't disturb us. Everyone was very considerate.
