Refugio Torre Central-Torres del Paine
Reviewed March 31, 2014 via mobile

This was our first and by far the nicest, newest looking and most modern refugio we stayed in.

Rooms were bright and airy and slept up to 6 people in bunks.

Showers were powerful and hot and the bathrooms were reasonably clean.

The reception staff and kitchen staff especially were very friendly and happy.  Food was great and the best we experienced at refugios in the park.

We stayed two nights and had a big piece of roast pork with rice and a cream sauce on night and then chicken with rice and a sauce the second night.  The soup and desserts were also good.  Breakfast was nicely cooked and the sandwiches for lunch were the best of all the refugios.

This was also the busiest refugio we visited so there was a good atmosphere. Would recommend.

Located at the eastern end of the 'W' walk, we found this hostel friendly and welcoming. All areas were warm (outside temperatures very cold!), duvets were lovely, rooms and bathrooms very clean at all times of day. Log stoves in the lounge areas are a nice touch. Food is simple but filling. Only suggestion would be for some more comfortable cushions or beanbag chairs for the timber seats in the lounges.

We stayed at this refugio on our first night of the W circuit trek in Torres del Paine. The views of Las Torres from the refugio were pretty impressive. The bed sheets and comforter appeared new and clean and the showers worked well. However, don't expect much more. The bedrooms are tiny with 6 bunk beds in each and no hooks to hang anything. The only place to put your backpack and store anything was in one of the dirty lockers. The bedroom walls sounded paper thin and you could hear pretty much everything in the rooms next door. As well, the food was pretty bad, particularly the boxed lunch; the food here was the worst of all the refugios we stayed at in the park. I don't think we were served a single fruit or vegetable while we were here and the food was plain and dry. Overall an average experience but definitely overpriced what you get.

Being a lodging place in the middle of nowhere, it would be reasonable to assume that certain facilities and services are impossible to provide unless, there were some intervention. Nevertheless, the lodge had hot showers, bunk beds, heaters, lockers and a cook house and bar. While prices are fixed at quite a high rate, I'd say it's a small price to pay to enjoy the TdP scenery. But yes, I'd agree that the bunk rooms are a bit tiny and that it would be in the interest for all travelers that the rooms be sound proof - I could hear ppl in the next room snoring! Having power sockets for travelers would be a great bonus too!

I checked in and asked to be moved from an upper bunk to a lower one, ...I got a snarl and sentenced to the WORST 6-person room in the place. It barely had enough room between beds to turn around, never mind, store your stuff. The room, had no light...etc etc etc. (Room #10, bed #59 more or less) I DID NOTE the comforters are new and of a good quality, the mattresses are solid, so that is a plus. Bathrooms were clean and the eggs for breakfast were actually COOKED (rare down there) and I must say I got a nice smile from the woman working the meal counter. Oh and the toast in the morning was from home made bread! For the price, people simply feel the experience should be better. (Though we did have a nice time in the bar the night before.)
Perhaps with enough complaints Fantastico Sur will re evaluate the product they provide. Probably not, but one can hope!

You can really tell they have the monopoly. So many things went wrong...The people in the refuge was not informed by their colleagues in Puerto Natales, so they didn't prepare the lunch boxes at our arrival. We had to insist in having them done (luckly I insisted in having in written in the boucher in Puerto Natales). We had to pay a special dinner for December 31st. It was a disaster: the food was cold, no place to sit, the personal was so rude... On the next day, January 1st, breakfast was not organised in time (they impose the breakfast time, but breakfast was ot ready)... and all the personal was like zombies. I think they were still drunk from the party the night before. No milk for breakfast, etc, etc, etc...
Impossible to sleep with people partying, dirty bathrooms, unpleasant personnel, and all for such an expensive price. Really abusive. I hope they will loose the consession for exploiting this bussiness.

We stayed 2 nights at Torres Central; the first day we stayed in a shared dorm of 6 as it was raining, and didn't like the idea of pitching our tent in the heavy rain as we entered the park. The only nice thing was having a roof over our heads; the dorms with 3 bunk beds were small, and the refugio was basic with other hikers hanging their wet clothes and socks all over the refugio communal area and dorms. Floors were dirty, showers were just about clean but had shelves.

The second night we decided to camp - this was a MUCH better experience. The campsite is just on the other side of the small river from Torres Norte, it is lovely, flat, large, with trees for shelter, picnic tables for you to spread out all the contents of your rucksack / backpack, the shower blocks are nice and clean, and are larger and cleaner than those in the refugio, with space to put your toiletries next to the sink! The staff at the campsite are also super nice and friendly.

We had dinner at the Torres Central restaurant - portions were very very small; I was still hungry and even had to have the "spare" bread roll on the table. For the price you pay, you would have at least want to have enough food.

Hi,

Thank you for your comments, we are glad you have enjoyed your stay at our Campsite, actually we´ve had an unusual rainy spring and summer, so it a real challenge to maintain floors clean, but for sure we will check this as well as the meals at out restaurant.

Your advice has been very useful for us to check our services, thank you again.

Regards, FS team
