“The best refuge!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 24, 2014

Came here with my girlfriend and absolutely amazing. The people in this refuge are very kind, warm and special. I've been in a lot of hotels in my life and this is the best by far, and not talking about the comfort, about the people running it.

I am speechless about how kind they were with us. And you have to add that Los Cuernos is located in the best spot in Torres del Paine.

I finished the circuit and decided to walk 14 km back to Los Cuernos to stay for 2 more nights... Thats how amazing this refuge is.

Thank you Peter, Eduardos, Victor, Rodrigo and Luis for making our trip insane!! Fantastico Sur, you should be very proud of the people you got up there in Los Cuernos!!

Great location on the lake and wonderful views. We stayed in the regular refugio, which meant at we were crammed into a small room with triple decker bunks-nine people per room. Dinner was very good, with a nice stew and great cake dessert. Staff were pleasant, at least the ones I dealt with.

The problems included dirty bathrooms and hallways and staff non-existent to monitor guest activities. A large tour group arrived, with the women taking over the two available sinks in the women's washroom to wash socks and underwear. They then hung all of them over the large wood heater at the end of the corridor outside our room. They strung up lines and also used their hiking poles to create additional space. At regular intervals in the night, (up to 11:30 pm when I fell asleep), they'd come out to check on their clothing. They would move the poles up and down on the wall, creating loud scraping noises in our room which was on the opposite side. Yikes! Staff were no where to be seen, and only re-appeared at 7:30 am when the electricity came back on.

It was ironic that the place that was the dirtiest of the refugios we stayed was the only one that required us to take off our boots going in.

Room Tip: Cabins may be a better choice if one is available.

I hadn't realised that I had managed to book one of the cabins so I was over the moon when I found out that we had.

The cabins are very romantic with a log fire and a towel and shampoo is even provided.

There's an electricity socket and light in the cabins with a separate shower block for cabin people just behind the cabins.

It was unusually warm (so too hot for the log fire unfortunately) and extremely windy so we didn't try out the hot tub but we did see some people trying it out.

Showers were alright although I could only get the water scorching hot or freezing cold.

Food at the refugio was not good even though we had been told that it would be the best so maybe we were there on an off night? There was a small slab of salty pork with some rice no sauce for main and a quorn looking alternative for the vegetarians.

Staff were friendly tho and breakfast and lunch was good.

2-berth cabins were worth extra cost as had views of mountains, comfortable beds with linen provided and wood burning stove. Good evening meal and breakfast was provided in refugio. Good facility especially given remote location. Friendly staff and fantastic location for views of los Cuernos ('the horns').

As with all of the Fantastico Sur refugios in the park, this one was strategically located right in the middle of the W circuit and in a very beautiful location right on a stunning rock beach. The accomodations were similar to the other refugios, very cramped bedrooms, cramped common area, small bathrooms, not enough hooks to hang clothes to dry or shelves to store personal items. On the positive side, the beds were warm and clean and the food was actually pretty decent, atleast on the night that we stayed here. While certain of the staff were pleasant, others were cold and impatient, particularly during meal service. We felt as if we were bothering them at times in asking for simple things like a refill of hot water for tea and coffee. As with the other Fantastico Sur refugios, my main complaint is that the high price charged for bed and board is not justified by what is provided. Clearly, the owners of these refugios are aware that hikers (who don't wish to camp) have no where else to go and therefore there is no incentive to improve or offer a better product and service.

The refugios here undoubtedly have a high price tag tagged to it - afterall they are in the middle of nowhere and are providing a service to you. I stayed in the bunk rooms (the cabanas were all sold out 3mths ago) and they were quite alright. Usual problem with the Fantastico Sur runned refugios are that the rooms are not sound proof-ed. You can hear people talking and snoring next door. Another downside is that they have limited showers - only 3 cubicles, so if you arrive early, shower first! My stay here was alright, barring the Canadian couple who insisted on airing their smelly socks in the room and stinking up the entire bunk!

First of all: what I am reviewing here is not the beautiful scenery or the overall W track experience (that's simply gorgeous)
But: my reviews try to help other travelers to get information about the accommodation.
And, this must be said in this case, all the Refugio's are a rip off in Torres del Paine. In my opinion this is clearly due to a lack of competition between different operators.
Fantastico sur has the privilege of running a camp that is strategically positioned in the middle of the W track, that normally you don't get around staying there on your hike.

Problem is: of course they know. This is why they charge you heavily for Food, drinks and accommodation and work with young, inexperienced, grumpy staff who, sry to say, has never heard about service or even common sense (nobody knows stuff or is responsible for anything). You leave with the impression of having paid 100US (easily, depending on weather and your last track) for almost nothing in return.

The argument of "they have to get everything via horse or boot" is valid but apparently the staff lives well on it (the food they make for themselves is far better than the gringo stuff). If you have the chance, whenever you can, go camping, enjoy the scenery and leave the Refugios aside!
