Grumpy and lazy staff. How difficult can it be to welcome trekkers with a smile? I had heard on the W that this hostel was bad. I actually enjoyed 9 in a room but really was put off by the staff who were hopeless (at least at reception). Not sure sheets were ever changed on the beds. My shower was broken. It would not be that bad if they were not charging $50 for a bed but they are so yuo expect a little bit of service instead of staff that make it feel like they are doing you a favor to serve you. It can´t be that difficult (or expensive) to welcome travellers with a cup of tea for example - small cost, big impact. Another terrible Fantastico Sur experience - the park needs to get the company to clean up its act or get another supplier. I´m sure there are lots of companies that would love to run this refugio. Los Cuernos - read the reviews.

This place will be burned in my memory forever, the Cuernos simply are enchanting, I watched the light play on the rocks for hours. I am sure my misery would have been burned into my memory if I had slept on the ground. Get a cabin if you can! Though, nothing really works, hot showers (no), hot tub (who you kidding?), But sleeping INSIDE in that wind…priceless!
(There are maybe 8 cabins, when we were there, I do NOT think they were all booked, you can probably reserve one. We found them clean, with electricity and great linens, good mattresses, the other stuff?...see below)
Our experience with the restaurant-part of the refugio was somewhere between refugee camp and a low-class boys' boarding school! I have never fought so hard for some marmalade in my life, never mind that second cup of coffee, …the dining room is waay too small, the staff is very young, indifferent, there are waaaay too many people contending for the same thing. (See Maslow’s hierarchy of needs ….life is pretty basic here.)
Food sucks, it is over-priced and it took us a whole day to figure out you can buy two beers or two bottles of wine for the same price as one , …The cabana showers were only hot for one day.
And on and on. You can defrost the staff a bit if you chat about futbol, but I must admit, they give a little “Gangnam-style” presentation before dinner that is hilarious!
Regardless, stay in the cabins, get all the meals, unless you like packing stuff around. Your sandwich will be too chewy, though on homemade bread. And while it does suck, it has a little brand on it that says Los Cuernos!
And when it is not raining, the evening on the porch after dinner is an international salon of unbelievable enjoyment.
If I had one little piece of advice for trip planners, put an extra day in your itinerary and just layover here. Do nothing, but watch the light change on the Cuernos, watch the wind pound down on Lake Nordenskold, visit the upper part of the waterfalls, chill. Oh and never mention Real Madrid to the staff! Ggggg

Room Tip: Get a cabin, some are really close to the waterfall, which is awesome

If you do the famous W-trek in Torres Del Paine and you don't want to camp, then you have no choice but to use this very rustic hut. We ordered in advance and prepaid for bed with blankets, but we got sleeping bags instead. The bunk bed in our room had no ladder. The bathroom ran out of toilet paper. Make sure to bring your own toilet paper as well as soap and shampoo (a good one to carry is Campsuds which comes in 2 Oz bottle). The service was quite poor esp. when we complained about the above issues. Prices were extremely expensive and don't take Argentinan Pesos. The good news that we you sit outside you have a great view of the majestic Horns (Los Cuernos).

This is one of the smaller refugios on the W circuit as it doesnt have the day walkers who you will find staying in Refugio Torre Central and Paine Grande - as a result we found it had a younger demographic to those refugios and a different vibe. As well as the dormitory rooms they have a number of cabins up the hill (maybe six) which I would definitely recommend as they provide some more privacy, have a separate bathroom building (though this was out of order for our night there...) and have access to an outdoor hot tub! The cabins have a skylight, providing an amazing view of the stars if you happen to be awake in the middle of the night, literally from the comfort of your own bed!

The common area in the refugio is very small, so they ask everyone to leave it at about 630pm so they can set up for dinner which was a bit of a shame when you are well settled in with a bottle of wine! The food itself was average, but pretty consistent with what we saw in all the refugios on the W circuit (instant soup, piece of meat with mashed potato, fruit dessert) - not great, but good enough to fuel you for the next day of walking!

Fine for a night to provide a link between the base of the towers and French Valley day walks - I wouldn't recommend staying longer than that.

Room Tip: Get a cabin - the bunk rooms looked a bit squeezed, and the bathrooms were small

On our W trek we slept one night at the camping of Los Cuernos. You pay 8000 pesos per person per night! As we arrived, we could not pay at the reception. They told us, that one guy will come and collect the money. This guy came - but at about 9pm, when we were almost asleep. If you're already asleep, they wake you up again! (Refugio Grey Pay system: you can pay at reception, get a sticker for your tent and someone controls it and ask you to pay, if you did not already do so. -> perfect!). The next morning it rained a lot and in the cooking shelter it rained as well! (you pay 8'000 pesos -> i would expect a better roof!) In the end, staff were so clever to clean up the toilet at about half past nine in the morning, when most of the people are getting ready to trek. -> annoying!!!
It was absolutely the worst camp site, we stayed during the W!

Beautiful location where you can sit back and relax a bit. Staff members were very kind and went out of their way to help. It was great meeting people from all over the world and make some new friends from the experience. Overall a friendly and cozy atmosphere.

We were there during new year eve... so there was a special meal for the diner : very expensive and very bad. The service was extremely poor too. The location is beautiful, that's it ! I would not give the lunch box to a pet ! Avoid it !

Room Tip: Las cabanas are awesome !
