Excellent experience at the camping, after an epic walk. The place is just beautiful and it couldn't be more welcoming. El chico Juan was extremely helpful and made everything easier. I would definitely go back, stay longer and enjoy the views!

The only way to this refugio is by hiking in and we had a lovely overnight stay here in perfect weather conditions. Having stayed at Paine Grande the previous night I was very impressed with the table service at dinner and the delicious food (dessert was a warm banana muffin with an ooozing chocolate centre), couldn't have asked for better after a full day of hiking. The bunks are three high in the dorms, but they were comfortable (didn't rock or squeak) and the shower was hot (minimal privacy though).

During the high season it gets overloaded but the staff do their best, just be nice to them they will get most of your problems solved. Their restaurant is very small, one wonders what they do with all the money they make if they are not gonna invest in making the restaurant bigger. during the high season you have to leave the dinner table after an hour. what if its raining outside? Come on owners, time to put some more money in it.

great cosy refugio, be sure to stay in the cabins. There are like 5 cabins which share bathrooms and a outside hot tub with great views from the snowcapped mountains and lake while soaking away. Cabin is nice with a kingsized bed and great view of the lake. If you are with 2 persons a cabin will turn out just a bit more expensive than a bunkbed with sheets. Refugio itself is where dinner and breakfast is served on wooden tables. Food however can be improved in quantity and quality. Had a good time there,

This place was pretty much packed to the gills when we camped there. The gear was terrible, our tent(s) broke both days - zippers each time. Because of how many people are there, there's no hanging out inside the refugio if the weather turns, and turn it will. So be prepared to experience the elements (but that's what you came to Patagonia for, wasn't it?). The wind can howl at gale forces in this area. It will actually blow things away. There must be quite a stash of tents, hats, jackets and misc. gear somewhere up in the Cuernos wherever the wind blows to, a treasure for anyone who finds it.

The staff is a notch below the El Chileno staff in ability to manage complex situations like missing tents and gear, but I also blame our (lack of) Spanish speaking skills. The food is even less great, somehow. But, it's enough fuel and sleep to hike to the Cuernos, which are gorgeous and so worth dealing the strange refugios.

Room Tip: I'd probably investigate reserving a cabin ahead of time, next time I do this.

Our night at Los Cuernos campground was by far the worst on the entire circuit. The free campsites provided much better services and facilities than this overpriced campsite/refugio. The other campsites along the circuit that are operated by Vertices charge way less (3000-3500 pesos vs 6000 pesos at Los Cuernos) and have clean bathrooms, affordable food, friendly staff, and cooking shelters.

When we arrived at Los Cuernos around 4pm, the bathrooms were already disgusting. The wastepaper basket was overflowing and one of the two toilets for campers was backed up. By the time we left in the morning, both were backed up, along with both sinks outside for campers.

The wind was very strong the night we stayed (130km/h +), which is obviously not the fault of Fantastico Sur, but they did nothing to help when dangerous things were happening. There was a shed close to the water which had a series of large wood slabs for a roof (each about the size of a door), and 8 of the slabs flew off during the night and early morning. Some were lodged in trees, others were on the ground near people's tents. This was a very dangerous situation and nobody from the company checked to make sure that campers were OK, or made any attempt to secure the rest of the roof for the safety of the people sleeping nearby in tents. It seemed the people inside the refugio were well taken care of, but the staff had absolutely no regard for the safety or comfort of the campers.

Many people were up and out of the campsite before daybreak because many of the sites were very exposed and the winds were too strong. Nobody was able to cook breakfast because there was no shelter for cooking. All the free campsites at least have a 3-sided cooking shelter for campers, but it seems that the campers' money goes to improving the refugio. The staff said that strong winds are common at this campsite, so it is hard to understand how they could not have something as simple as an area for people to use their cookstoves.

Fantastico Sur has the advantage of having a monopoly on the services in the area, so I recommend strongly planning your route to skip this site altogether. There are a few sites closeby, and it is sometimes possible to stay 2 nights at sites if it is not busy, so with a little planning it is possible to walk straight through this site.

Of course this took away very little from how incredible our 9 days in Torres del Paine were, but it is certainly a disappointment to have such an appalling site in such a beautiful park full of other wonderful sites. Please skip it if you can - you'll get a much better (and safer!) sleep anywhere else!

Room Tip: The sites closer to the water in the trees are a little more sheltered from the wind, however they a...
