“Modern, clean and highly recommendable!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 15, 2011

We have occupied 5 rooms for 3 nights with 3 families with young children. The rooms are modern and very spacious as well as the restaurant and hallways. In fact from the available pictures I was expecting a somewhat outdated hotel but on the contrary it has a very comfortable and modern feeling. Staff were young but very helpful also with advising on activities for families. The food standard was good with some very nice dishes but do not expect culinary exceptional food. There is no television and internet was unpredictable and rather slow although we managed to skype home. We were lucky with the weather and made an exceptional excursion from the hotel on the Rio Serano to the Pacific followed by a lovely barbecue. The views on the mountains are breathtaking from the hotel and from your room and I believe the best around that area. You can get lodged closer to the peaks from where you have easier and quicker access for walking to the Torres but it would not provide you with much better views. The hotel was surprisingly calm for the time of year with most people of pension age, there was not much happening in the evening. We had dinner one evening in a different hotel closer to the peaks where it was much more lively with a younger public. Overall a very recommendable hotel to explore the beautiful Torres del Paine parc, I hope you are lucky with the weather as we were but I would even go back in winter it must be equally breathtaking.

Small rooms. Three times to the front desk and still our key card only worked one time in ten. My bag delivered to the wrong room. With a good manager, this would be a great hotel.
Location was outstanding. The Torres del Paine were stunning! It was raining at sunrise, so didn't get to see that.

Fantastic location with spectacular views of the Torres De Paine. Excursions and all around service at Rio Serrano were excellent. The buffet is very good with many varied options to choose from. The staff from transportation services, to the front desk to the staff at the restaurant and excursions were excellent. We really enjoyed our stay and will do it again when possible. Photo is view from hotel room. Highly recommended.

The hotel is very spacious and has an open floorplan. The lobby has enormous windows with a view of the spectacular Torres del Paine peaks. The dining room is very large and has the feel of a cafeteria. Dinner and breakfast were buffet-style, with abundant choices.

My room was large and well-furnished. Unfortunately there was a large, loud private party in the bar two floors below me, and my room reverberated with the thumping of the bass music. I called the front desk at midnight to lodge a complaint but they were not responsive.

By the end of our long trip through the Patagonia we arrived to the Hotel Rio Serrano in Torres del Paine where we were nicely surprised about the beauty and comfort of this facility where we found a very good service, excellent food and beautiful and comfortable rooms . We enjoyed a spectacular view of the three towers (Torres del Paine) and the Paine horns. At night , after all the excitement of the different activities and excursions , we were delighted with the music of the cuban duet "Talisman" who transmit their adorable warmth while performing songs of the cuban and international repertoir. It`s an experience we recomend to everybody.

We stayed at the Rio Serrano as a base for day hiking in Torres del Paine NP which is everything its cracked up to be. We would give this hotel our qualified support. On the positive side its nicely located just outside the park on a bend in the river and has a dining room with huge windows with superb views of the south side of the mountain range from every table. The only dinner option in the hotel is a buffet dinner (there didnt seem to be many alternative dining options nearby). As buffets go its actually not too bad (especially if you've been walking all day and need some carbs and protein) and they seem to avoid the common buffet pitfall of drying out every piece of meat. Also some harried but cheerful drinks waiters do a commendable job of keeping the wine flowing throughout. On the downside (or upside depending on your perspective) it is very popular with family groups which means crowds of high velocity and high volume children and adults being present at every meal and in the halls and common areas day and night (our room was on the ground floor which likely gets the worst of it). If you tune this out by walking yourself to exhaustion in the fabulous park during the day its not a bad place to stay if you are a couple travelling without kids and from looking at reviews of other places in or near the park the similarly priced alternatives dont seem to offer much better. If you are a family with kids this hotel would likely rate higher.

The Hotel Rio Serrano is a very nice hotel -- rooms are big, clean, and well decorated; the hotel lobby areas are very large and well decorated; it's got a very nice view of the mountains; and it's well-situated near the Serrano River just outside of the official Torres del Paine border, with good access to all of the major park tours and hikes. While not a five-star hotel, the overall feel of the hotel borders on the luxurious.

The Hotel Rio Serrano is also far better than similarly-priced hotels nearby. While staying in Torres del Paine, we went into or walked by several of the other hotels in the area in a similar price range (e.g. Hosteria Lago Grey, Hotel Lago Tyndall, Cabanas del Paine, etc.), and it seemed to us that the Hotel Rio Serrano was far nicer (or at least far fancier from the looks of the hotel exterior/interior). Unless you are willing to pay triple the price to stay at Explora, the Hotel Rio Serrano is therefore a great option.

Tours run through the hotel are very good. We especially recommend the glacier hike ("Caminata en Hielo", actually run through a local travel outfit) which is an amazingly cool experience -- we're still talking about it months later, and the photos are fantastic. Definitely cooler than taking a "regular" hike, even to see Torres del Paine. Not technical at all, and doesn't require any particular experience, but not for kids or seniors. Also recommended is the tour of the Serrano River by zodiac boat -- very fun day trip, and a good way to see the local area in a more intimate way than a van ride. That one's fine for kids or seniors (our parents and great aunt, all in their early 70s, managed OK). Finally, the van ride around the park is not nearly as "fun" as the other two trips, but is a great way to see some spectacular views around the park.

The only reason I didn't rate the Hotel Rio Serrano five stars? First, the tour booking office was only intermittently helpful. Desired tours are frequently either sold out or not running on particular days, and the tour booking office seemingly doesn't have information on that until the last minute. If you're willing to forego "playing it by ear" and are willing to lock in a reservation, it's better to contact the hotel ahead of time to make a reservation. Second, the hotel restaurant, while reasonably good, is extremely expensive -- $50 set price for a buffet dinner. Luckily, if you want less expensive options, there's a restaurant a five-minute walk down the street (decent but not fantastic food), and the other local hotels (e.g. Lago Tyndall), also a short walk away, will generally let you eat at their less expensive buffets.

(FYI, when we booked our reservation, we were somewhat wary of some of the older reviews on TripAdvisor that complained about noise or poor service. I think this was several years ago, before they went through a major renovation and change in management -- we didn't have any problem with either of those issues. I therefore recommend that you base your assessment on the newer reviews only).
