“Space Science Conference in the Hotel Rio Serrano”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 10, 2013

At the end of October I have attended the Space Science Conference in Torres del Paine in the Hotel. It has great facilities for small conferences (40 people). As a general overview of the hotel I would like to say that it has very nice common areas, modern rooms with no TVs. The internet is slow, and this problem can not be solved, because the hotel is in the middle of nowhere. But it is a positive moment, because after a few days anybody started to disconnect completely from the reality and started to be absorbed by the environment. The one day tour to Torres del Paine was a memorable experience. We also had time to make some tracking around and it was great. The food is great (buffet breakfast and dinner). I am dreaming to come back again as a simple tourist.

Room Tip: view to Cuernos

We went with the family, including a 2 and a 6 year old. The common areas are large and spacious as well as with plenty of outdoor space to run around. For the adults, the large space made it nice to meet other travelers from various parts of Chile and other countries. There were quite a few tour groups and a small conference that came through during our stay which gave the atmosphere a constant buzz (in a good way). The staff was accommodating and friendly. The activities coordinators were very knowledgeable and plenty to do during the day and into the evenings. (No pool. No exercise facility but really, that's not why you are there.)

There are no TVs in the room (which did not bother us) and internet is available. The internet is generally more speedy in the common areas than in the room but don't expect uber-connectivity given the remote part of the world that you are in. The Hotel sits with a great view of the Cuernos, with a short walk to a river if you want to fish and a 60-90 minute hike to Laguna Escondido very close to the property. It is a great base for day trips around the Park with both domesticated and wild animals everywhere you look.

All meals that we had were buffet (breakfast and dinner) with a good variety available. Dinner started at 7:30 which is a bit late for many gringos. The bar area has a good selection of sandwiches for those that want to eat earlier.

Overall a very relaxing stay. It is a modern hotel with a great view of the Park.

My wife and i stayed here while traveling as part of a small group of photographers during the month of February. The hotel is fairly new and pretty large for the region. This makes it popular for the larger bus tours. The rooms and public spaces are clean and attractive. The food is good but not great. The bar and evening entertainment were not very impressive. Watch out for the mosquitos outside. The view out back of the mountains with the river in the foreground is spectacular. Have your camera ready for a rainbow.

Room Tip: Get a view looking out back towards the main mounain range

You've probably seen photographs of Los Cuernos del Paine. The windows on the north-facing side of this well-appointed hotel frame that view. I usually never sleep with curtains open but, for 5 nights at Rio Serrano, I did. To watch the sun rising and setting over the mountains, in a changing kaleidoscope of pinks, oranges, purples and blues was remarkable. Thank goodness for digital photography; it would have cost a small fortune in film and film processing to try to capture the ever-changing panorama! Even if the hotel had proved to be quite basic, it would have been worth the expense just to have that view.
As it happens, the hotel is modern. The public spaces are large, airy and spacious. The bedroom was large with plenty of hanging and storage space and the en-suite bathroom tastefully decorated and well-appointed. For those who like that sort of thing (I do!), free wi-fi is available in the lounge and bar areas; not the fastest connection but not bad considering the relatively remote location.
The breakfast and evening meals operate on a buffet system and are excellent; the dinner is remarkably good value. The staff are attentive and unobtrusive.
Would I recommend the hotel? Absolutely! If I am fortunate enough to return to that part of Patagonia, the Rio Serrano would be my first choice.

Room Tip: Face north for the view!

This was a beautiful place to end our "W Curcuit" trek. Before our stay, they transported us (for a standard fee) to our start at Los Torres Refugio. They also arranged our ferry out to hotel gray and transport form hotel gray to them. Very nice, helpful, and good English.

Considering the remote location of this hotel it is amazing. Our room was large, well equipped
and extremely comfortable. The staff, especially the organiser of excursions, were extremely helpful and friendly. We did have significant trouble with a door lock which took time and effort to sort out but was eventually repaired and the receptionist paid three visits to our room in her
attempt to resolve the problem. The walking guides were superb and very professional.Wifi was limited to the ground floor, but given the remote location and the fact that it was free, one could hardly complain and the lounging areas on the ground floor were very comfortable and attractively furnished with stunning views. We found the food rather less exciting than in other hotels on this trip and quite expensive, but, again, one has to make allowances for the remoteness.
