reading some previous reviews and since this is my 3rd family visit to Torres del Paine NP i must say that Hotel Serrano is BY FAR the best option in the park! first... you need to stay in the park for at least 3nights so that you can do some hikes and have some high chances of better weather! if you stayed only 1 night like the couple in one of the previous reviews & you get the usual rain or fog you will miss the highest point of the hotel.. the VIEWS! it is the only hotel from where you have a full view of the Paine Massif! second, it is the best location since it is just across the Serrano river so technically it is outside the NP but logistically speaking it is in the middle of park since you are half way to Lago Grey area or the Laguna Amarga area!!!
third... the fact is that SERVICE in Chile is always slow (check in, waiters etc) but people tend to be extremely friendly & this is Patagonia so you need to change your chip & give time... time!!! Breakfast is unbelievable taking into account that everything has to travel 4-5hrs from Punta Arenas! & the dinners are a MUST! the chefs are amazing... some nights you have a la carte (go for the salmon!) & some nights when they are full they offer the best buffet you will see in patagonia!
forth & last... it is paradise for KIDS! the whole ground floor is full of huge sitting area & open spaces but also an enormous grass area in front of the hotel where kids can play for hours & hours while parents we can enjoy a drink looking at the mountains!
TIP: if you stay at hotel serrano treat yourself with a room with a view! all the even numbers! it is more expensive but if you are lucky with the weather you will have the best views of one of the top 5 national parks in the planet! you will get to see the changing of the colors in the mountain & we even stayed up all night to see the full moon dancing around the massif while the horses were running in front of the hotel enjoying their freedom! Simply THE FAMILY TRIP of our lives!
HIKES... with kids you can do LAGO GREY & SALTO GRANDE (easy if no winds...very hard if windy! only 2hrs but more fun if in 3!). you should not miss GUANACO VALLEY where you walked among over 1000guanacos with a view of the towers in the back! WOW! i get chills while writing this review!
