Though hotel has a good, convenient location and the outside looks charming, our room was dirty, the bed merely a box spring and it was full of mosquitos. The staff are not very accommodating. We did move to a different room for the 2nd night and it was cleaner but adjacent to the restaurant and very loud.

We fully share the sentiments expressed here about the staff! The reception people are glued to their compoutors and seem really irritated when being asked for service. A cup of hot water was "not available" due to lack of gas(!), but available when the kitchen was contacted direct.
The location is great but the noise level from karaoke - and DOGS - is maddening. Our recommendation is: Stay elsewhere!

Room Tip: There are lots of other hotels very close to this hotel!

We stayed in december in this hotel. For the the third time. Is Sala Champa an excellent hotel? No. But it is good enough. It is situated in the centre of town, everything is nearby. There is an old colonial building with rooms and some bungalows. Th bungalowsy are spacious, but very simple. Too simple this time. We arrived in the early morning after a bustrip from Vientiane. Tired, hot, feeling dirty. First thing? A shower. he idea of a river of water on your body after such a night in the bus. There I stood naked under the shower and tried to start. I excpected my dream. But there came nothing, only one or two two little drips.. A desillusion. What to do? My wife knwew. She took a needle and pricked in the thirty, forty holes of the showerhead. And then, there came the water. A dream became reality.
In the evening we put the light on. No light. There seemed to be some life in the lamp but very far away. That was all. I asked somebody from the staff for help. 'O, you have to wait a little and then the light comes.'I told I waited already half an hour. Yes, he saw the problem. We got immediately a new room and so in the evening we moved for the second time. Once settled I wanted a shower. Again I opened the tab. Again there was no water. Again I took the needles and opened the holes in the showerhead. And there it was: water.
Maintenance is not a strong point in this hotel.
We were two times before in the hotel and learned to love the restaurant. The service was often chaotic, but the food was excellent. The old waiter had gone. A new one tried and did his best. The food was different. More to the taste of the western people. Not spicy anymore. Such a pity, the kitchen was so excellent. Then came the bill. Correct, everything was there, the amounts were the same as on the menu. Why was the total sum so high? We had to pay 25% more. There had been made a miscalculation. On purpose. Rob the tourist, take their money where you can. We did not visit this restaurant again.
Should you visit this hotel? O yes, but be sure, take some needles with you.

An interesting place.

This hotel is an old colonial building with lots of character, plus some newer bungalows (I'm not sure how much newer). It's definitely more upmarket than the cheapies and it attracts an older clientele (when I was there most people on the guest register were in their 40s and 50s).

While it's great that there is so much character, this place does feel very old (with old furniture and fittings).

My room was huge, with two double beds only taking up a quarter of the room. And they were hard old spring beds, too.

We stayed for two nights, and paid 16$ for the room, after negotiation. There is no breakfast included.
Rooms are okay, with A/C, hot shower, and we had twin beds.
Staff was really friendly.
Don't book bus tickets with them (we wanted to go to savannakhet), because they charge you on extra costs.

OK-price was not the problem. The fact is that Lao hotels in this budget ($30-50 US0 will vary wildly ion quality. The rooms in the main building are depressing as is the whole vibe, really.Sleepy help even by local standards;Lao desk agents don't like their computer /TV time interrupted, but here's the real problem, mentioned above-The Beds! I swear on my life that was a box-spring without the mattress we were given to sleep on!Over the top bad!

Room Tip: Stay at the Pakse or Champassak Grand

The rooms around the courtyard are good value for Pakse (which is a bit pricey for Laos) and there is a nice seating area. Staff are generally helpful but do get on with their own lives, watching tv or listening to music. Food in the restaurant was good quality and not too expensive. Good location too. Wifi worked in our room
