This beautiful garden restaurant is located quite deep and secluded in the housing areas of Sungai Petani. It would be difficult to find it if you're not a local. Moreover, the food is abit pricey for its small portion, but it does taste quite good. It is a good occasional treat for uni students who are based in SP!

lived here for 4 years and am very glad to say that this is the best thai food in town with very reasonable prices... definite must try: tom yam, coconut drink. best avoided: pandan chicken (tastes like twisties). all their vegetables are very nice, especially one which is done with belacan (not kangkung). awesome environment, suitable for photos, romantic walks, etc. many pools with fishes, sceneries, garden, water ornaments etc. a must go in SP! another minus point would be the location, quite hidden and slightly hard to find, but ask any local and they will tell you.

This is a place to go if you have not decided whether to dine or to have a walk in a park. This restaurant is inside a garden of water features and fishes swimming all around. It gives truly a unique dining experience, and worth the distant travel from Penang.
I truly hope the operator of the restaurant will continue to upkeep and expand this idea of a restaurant setting where diners can go and experience a total different atmosphere.

The restaurant's name "Mae Salong" is adapted after a hill village north of Thailand, near to Chiang Rai. So naturally it is a Thai seafood restaurant. For first timer, it was rather hard to find the location of the restaurant because it is hidden in a village but most residents of Sungai Petani knew this restaurant. Those with GPS, the coordinate is N05 37.563 E100 27.914 From North-South highway, exit at the SP South Toll. Drive till the end and upon reaching the traffic junction turn right. Drive around 300m you will reach the first traffic light and turn left. You will enter a small-medium factories. Drive straight ahead and upon reaching the first road fork, keep to the right. Drive further around 1.5km you will see another road fork. Keep to you right again and drive till the end. You will see a restaurant at your right hand side surrounded by village houses and coconut trees.
The restaurant is built with lots of wood. Even the tables and chairs are made of wooden blocks. The restaurant's outside compound is decorated with pond, fountain and fishes. A very unique design restaurant. The restaurant's main building has two storreys. The upper deck is without air-conditioned while the lower deck has air-conditioned. There are also many open air small attap huts surrounding the main building used as dining.
The Thai food tasted very good and authentic. I ordered food portion for 4 pax. Songtam (papaya salad RM8), Tomyam seafood (RM15), fried kailan (RM8), deep fried pigeon (RM15) and rice (RM1/pax but come in a big bucket). Overall the food is very tasty and satisfying. Best of all the price is reasonable. There are many more dishes to try such as otak-otak, steam fish thai style, fried belacan chicken, fried pandan chicken, salted egg crab, fried soft shell crab, fried shishamo and etc. On top of that there are 2 stalls outsourced to the Malays which is chicken satay and grilled fish. Both are very tasty also. The chicken satay is RM0.50/stick and a medium size grilled stingray cost around RM23 (rather expensive but the sambal chili was really good).
I would recommend that you make table reservation a day or two earlier if you wish to go during weekend and opt for air-conditioned room.
