“Very friendly staff”
Reviewed January 27, 2013

Arriving at 3am was not great and there was no assistance in finding our rooms. However life improved after that. We had two good days on the beach but after that the weather was too windy and cool. Chairs around the beach sat empty, but reserved, which was mildly annoying. The pools though are lovely. The a la carte restaurants are all unique. We saved the best for our last night. The japanese restaurant was excellent. The Mediterranean restaurant served a set menu without the element of choice. The buffet restaurant had a large selection to choose from.

The staff are all friendly and helpful and the gardeners work hard to keep the grounds neat.

Room Tip: Rooms close to the Melia Dunas are quieter but you can't rely on getting what you want. My brot...

Dear food and friends

The arrivals are late, but how we know you come tired and late, we check in at the airport to reduce the time you take to go to your room and even if not the staff is there, you could see many people from animation, F&B, reception...trying to make your trip easier.

For us it is a pleasure to read that after that, your whole stay was great.

Hope to see you very soon

We are a couple in our 30's . Very pleased, especially after reading some concerning reviews regarding water for showers etc.. Let me say our water pressure was low, but always hot. We were on the second floor which could be why but it was hot with lots of pressure in our friends room on the first floor. I'm basing this review on the price we paid. We had lobster everyday ! The food was amazing !! The staff and service at this resort outshine any other resort I've traveled to. They have the largest selection of booze I've ever seen. We tried Japanese,French, and Italian ala Cartes . Japanese was my favourite, but I really enjoyed the others as well. I had fresh made to order stirfrys with shrimp and lobster, the best !!! They also had amazing grill stations with endless selection of meats and seafoods. The beach was the most beautiful I've seen! Lots of big waves to play in ! Our room was a little musty smelling, not as bad as our friends tho. I'm not picky, there were minor things like our hair dryer and remote didn't work, no coffee for the coffee maker,It didn't bother me tho. A few things could have been maintained such as one of the beach boardwalks had some loose boards, and snack bar washrooms were out of soap often and no latches on bathroom stalls, it was surprising because every other aspect was overly amazing ,from grounds to service and food quality. they should just fix some of the minor issues then it would be perfect !! And they a easy fixes. Please feel free to email me and ask me any questions , I'd be happy to answer.

Room Tip: Block 3 was perfect ,close to everything ! Second floor may have lower water pressure.

Dear Miss_Sushine

Thank you very much for your review.

You write about water pressure and could be that during the afternoon, when everybody takes their shower, it is a little bit lower in some points but temperature is very good as you say.

Our grounds are a big point at the hotel and during this period we are working hard on them, in order to make gardens a nice point to walk and enjoy.

Your comments will help a lot of people about the hotel.

Hope to see you very soon

Best Regards

The beach was great and the pools were very nice. They played music that looped so it was the same 8 songs every day at the beach and the pool. Over and over.

The rooms were pretty nice, building 22,the housekeepers were so sweet. It was off the beat so if you wanted to get away it was quieter. I could hear the neighbours going to the bathroom at night and you could hear every word. The beds were harc hard and the pillows are flat and hard. We had hot water but only one trickle - but it was nice and hot. We arrived in the wee early morning hours it was nice that we got our keys when we boarded the bus so we could go directly to the room. The reception could use some more English classes, it was really difficult to communicate.

Some of the staff were really really great and others were really really bad, this included the bar and the buffet.

Food - I don't go to Cuba for the food and don't expect much but could always find something to eat. We liked the Japanese one, the French looked good but we couldn't get a reservation. Italian was ok. Book as soon as you get there.

Got terrible bites not sure if it was from the beach or the room, bring something with you. Got horribly sick, fever etc... the day before we left though I was going to die or not make the plane.

The external bathrooms - bring paper with you, seems they were always out, some when you flush they overflow. These were just gross especially beside the snack bar and the one near the beach.

Other than the beach, drinking and eating there was nothing around. You could pay a peso to the larger flea market about 10 minutes away or there is a small flea market at the side of the hotel not advertised anyway we just happened to stumble on it. We didn't do any excursions. The entertainment at night was pretty awful.

We got what we paid for and I wasn't expecting much, but no I would not go back - definately would not go back.

Room Tip: Building 22

Melia Cayo Santa Maria become a hotel for families 3 years ago, and when we dicided to do it, it was because we were sure that kids had to have special treatment, they are clients too but with different needs, our team is very professional in that area too.

Thank you very much for your comments.

Dear Raphael

It is really great that you recognize our reception and special our head Receptionist Yusdelkys because it is a very difficult deparment, normally they recieve the first complaint and they try to help everyone.

They are the first thing you see when you arrive and they work really hard.

Thank you very much

From an overall perspective we had a good vacation stay here. It is Cuba however. The food was better than average for Cuba. The staff as always very friendly and warm. The beach is fantastic. That now ends my positives.

The hotel is an hour and a half from the airport not a problem just good to know. Make sure your return flight is reasonable as it could be your leaving the resort very very early in the morning to go home.

Our room was in very poor shape when we arrived. There was a used band aid on the floor. The curtains had stains. There was a tone of dust behind the bed posts. The worst was blood stains on our sheets, they had been washed but still we could see the stains. Hot water was an ongoing issue and the outdoor lights were not turned on at night.

Furthermore, there was still damage on our building from the last hurricane and a piece of tin banged against the wall all night long. Would have been much more piecefull if someone climbed a ladder and drove a couple of nails through the flapping medal.

We did feel that we got what we paid for though. It is definitely not a 5 star (even Cuban stars) resort.

Food wasn't great but ok compared to other places in Cuba . Beach more than excellent! Very good service! This hotel is quite compared to the one next to it las dunas. If u have kids las dunas has more toys and playground.

Dear Marwa

Thank you very much for your review, you are right we were a little out of kids toys and that's why I am very happy now, during this week we recieved a lot new of them and I am sure, if before our kids enjoyed a lot, now it will be even better.

I hope your kids have the possibility enjoying them in the future.
