“BEST CUBAN VACATION EVER!”
Reviewed October 13, 2012

My girlfriend and I had the pleasure of visiting the Melia Cayo Santa Maria (MCSM) from 21-28 Sep 12 and it was the best Cuban resort we have yet to visit. This was our 6th time to Cuba, our 2nd time to Cayo Santa Maria, and our 1st to MCSM.
From the start, CanJet took excellent care of us flying out of Toronto on time, a great meal and excellent on-board service!
The airport bus in Cuba was awaiting our arrival; air conditioned, cold beers, a pleasant Nolitours guide, and a 90 minute breathtaking ride! Be aware it's a long ride and please don't complain; it's a tour most people pay extra for. This ride was better than the last visit because the bus stopped in one of the 3 towns you'll pass through. We visited a local bar for additional refreshments and chatted with some locals.
We were greeted warmly at the Melia and checked in within seconds. Our bags were quickly picked up, loaded into an electric cart and we were whisked directly to our lovely room, lights on and already air conditioned.
The room was spacious, clean, well laid out and appointed, we immediately felt like we were home!
We had an ocean view room, second floor, building 19, but there are beautiful floral reserves between the hotel and beach so the view is only over the treetops. We just loved it for the privacy. There's also a new boardwalk running between our building and the next, directly to the beach, so this was very handy for us. On the resort side of the boardwalk there's also a refreshing el fresco shower :)
The resort bars were all well stocked and lively with guests. Wait time for service was seconds. It is obvious that everyone working this resort are all focused on giving total customer satisfaction. The lobby bar spills out into the outdoor patio area, plenty of comfortable seating for everyone. The bar area overlooks the covered entertainment area. There's also a pool table, piano lounge, several shops and a bank close by.
Entertainment each evening was a breathtaking "Las Vegas" style, and each day you could watch the young entertainers as they practiced and perfected their craft and their new shows.
I have been craving for a self-service coffee area at a Cuban resort and the MCSM has it! An area set up every morning with fresh juice, sparkling wines, coffee decanters, warmed milk, tea and pastries! I couldn't believe this and took the opportunity every day to enjoy this pleasure.
The buffet is very large and extremely clean. Staff are totally attentive and waiting for you to enter. Breakfast buffet also had a table at the front door with juice and sparkling wine. Lunch buffet was plenty of light foods awaiting you. Dinner buffet was romantic, low lighted, live music playing and there was 4 different chefs in various locations just waiting to cook you any food you wish. During every meal these young chefs are waiting to cook any combination of buffet foods fresh for you, usually with a good story and lots of smiles. PS. If you're unsure of what to order, ask the chef to create HIS favourite dish for you, you can't go wrong, try it! It's easy to see these guys love their jobs.
Another first was that our three a la carte meals were pre-booked for us and reservation slips delivered to our hotel door, WOW! Do you think I was impressed? Oh ya! First restaurant was Japanese; we were enthralled by the chef's show as he prepared and cooked our meal before our eyes, solid 10! Next was Mediteranian; European decor, low lights, acoustic guitars, Spanish wine and delectable food. And our 3rd was Italian; a small quaint restaurant that actually served real Italian-prepared pasta, it was all as good as any Canadian experience, promise!
The pool grill is 24 hours and they'll prepare just about anything you can imagine. Be sure and have a hand-made pizza baked for you.
The pools themselves are the best pools I have experienced in Cuba. Two pools side-by-side as they curve and weave around the property, totally surrounded by large palm trees. One pool has the swim-up bar and the other has the hot tub. There is pool-side bar service which we used several times, but part of the fun is wading over for the next round eh?
The gardens are stunning, amazingly colourful and trimmed to perfection. Please do remember to stop and compliment the hard working gardeners on their magnificent creations.
There is a beach side bar that can make almost any drink you wish, and there's also a beach side restaurant that deep fries fish, caught fresh that morning! They have a limited menu, a salad bar, beer on tap and a BBQ pit if you prefer anything right off-the-grill.
For souvenirs we went to both local shopping areas, one within walking distance to the MCSM and the other at the far end of the beach. To get to the far Pueblo we jumped on the open air double-decker bus that runs on the half hour. It's only 1 pesos and a lot of fun! It's a great way to see other resorts as it stops to pick up more customers, and a great photo-op too so bring your camera. We hailed a cab back to MCSM and it only cost us 4 pesos for the trip.
This resort was very magical for us each and every day, we met many wonderful guests and many amazing Cubans. They are such hard working, gentle, considerate people, I am humbled by their kindness and feel it my honour to respect them and their families with generous tips. But don't think for a moment they expect tips nor work only for tips. Their service is freely given and they enjoy the company of Canadians. Do get to know them, do ask their names, do ask about their families. There are dozens of people we meet on vacation, but always several who really stand out...
First, the general manager, Paco, is a man-driven; he is constantly on the move throughout the resort, meeting with staff, chatting up the workers, checking on quality, greeting the guests. Do take the time to meet him because he IS the reason for such high "camaraderie" and customer satisfaction.
Some other names of note for their excellence:
Teresa, our buffet server, always a smile and warm greeting and a clean table.
Xiomara, our lovely smiling waitress at the beach restaurant, quick with a cold drink.
Waldemar, the friendly bartender who always greeted me every morning with "strong" coffee!
Yulier, my other lobby bar buddy, always quick with a pint and a warm hand-shake.
Gallo, a kind gentleman who makes the best Spanish Coffee I've ever enjoyed.
Osbiel is the good looking guy who walks around the pool dispensing cold drinks and smiles.
Ruben, my best friend because he showed up every day at my room to stock the fridge!
Ruben, a hard working waiter at the 24 hour grill who will get you a delicious meal in minutes.
All-in-all you can see that the "team" at the Melia Cayo Santa Maria is totally dedicated, the grounds are immaculate, rooms are beautifully appointed, food is THE best I've experienced in Cuba and I would strongly recommend you DO vacation there.
Leave your troubles behind, don't go on holiday to count mosquitoes or photograph room deficiencies or complain about food you've never tried before...INSTEAD, go with an open-mind, an open-heart, a willingness to immerse yourself in another culture, another's food, another type of music and entertainment, and remember, you are a guest in this paradise they call CUBA,
HOLA!
Cheers, Paul

Me and my boyfriend have just returned from MCSM - Loved it!!

Check in on bus was fantastic, Thomas Cook rep Jorge was great (any problems he sorted them out ASAP)

When we first arrived the toilet didn't flush but when we let the front desk know the issue was resolved almost immediately.

Food wasn't bad, Cuba isn't renowned for good grub so need an open mind but overall was always something we fancied. Loved the meat/fish grill in the buffet and the fresh pasta was great too. The japanese was by far the best a la carte - delicious and the chefs were great fun!!
Beach was one of nicest we've seen and the pool area was well maintained and nice.

We loved the pool bar and the barmen were brilliant - always coming around the pools to take orders and very friendly.

Entertainment staff always had things to do for people who fancied keeping busy, from tai chi to archery, we even played bingo one day in the bar because of rain. Don't get too excited about the nighttime entertainment.

Catamaran trip was brilliant, all the drinks we wanted, food included and two snorkelling spots with plenty of colourful fish.

Havan trip was disappointing to be honest - feel the morning was a waste in a cigar shop and over an hour in a flea market , when you consider what we didnt see in Havana - it was a bit of a rush job and was wrecked by the end of it, but saying that, lots of people enjoyed it maybe it just wasnt for us. Wish we'd done the overnight for a bit more time.

overall ablsolutely loved it. great holiday, great staff - special shoutouts to the pool bar guys Oz and Yobi and our maids who left us lots of towel art and nice little notes everyday. Would recommend it to anyone!!

Slightly late review as we stayed at the hotel in early September.

Although the transfer is nearly 80 minutes; it's well worth the travel. Upon arrival, there was champagne and music, but best of all, there was no queuing at the reception desk or waiting for your room allocation, as this had all been taken care of in advance; on the coach en route.

The hotel itself is really well laid out and the 2 large pools are next to each other, with a swim up bar in the smaller pool. Osbiel, the barman, was amazingly helpful and nothing was too much; possibly the hardest working barman in Cuba!!

Our room was large, spacious and very clean. The air-con in the room was a god send, as the humidity outside was really high. The bathroom was clean and a good size, although the suite/ decor could be seen as a little tired compared to other hotels. The minibar was restocked daily with water, soft drinks and beers.

The buffet restaurant had a good choice of european and international food as well as some local Cuban dishes.

The a la carte restaurants were excellent, the food quality was really good, the serving staff were very attentive and the overall ambience was relaxed.

The all inclusive drinks list was large and included a lot of international brands that would usually be excluded; vodka, whiskey, gin etc...

Ernesto and the animation team worked hard and the nightly entertainment was lively and well polished.

The beach is connected via a short walkway and also has a bar. The sand is clean and soft, and the sea is surprisingly warm.

Overall we had a really enjoyable and relaxed holiday in Cayo Santa Maria.

Dear TXW

Even if your review is from previous months, it is good that you took the time to write it.

All landscape of the hotel is an added value, gardens, swimming pools, beach...even if you don't sleep there, they make an special ambience, I am sure you enjoyed them very much.

During the next months we will start changing some views of common areas and improve the hotel a little bit more.

Hope you have the possibility seeing them

My girlfriend and I are fans of Melia hotels and have stayed at several while visiting Cuba. From the moment we arrived at Melia Cayo Santa Maria (Melia CSM), however, things were off. Without going on and on about our negative experience at this hotel, I will just say that is not at all what one would expect from a 5 star hotel. I kept having to remind myself that we were staying at a five star Melia and not some unknown three star Cuban state-run hotel in the middle of nowhere. I am shocked that more reviewers on this site do not share our recollection of the hotel.

The buffet was one of the first areas we visited and I have to say it's one of the worst selections I have ever seen at an all-inclusive resort's buffet, much less a Melia. The a/c was practically nonexistent and there were no open windows to allow for ventilation, the attitude of the waiter when I pointed out a cockroach floating in my beer was completely indifferent, the Jamón Serrano looked like spoiled bacon, cockroaches roamed freely in the open next to buffet food, the selection of food from one meal to the next barely changed at all, bottled water was served from bottles that had been refilled (where the water came from - we don't know), and the list goes on and on.

If you end up staying at Melia CSM, only go to the buffet if there are no other options (should only have to be for breakfast). The open-air seafood restaurant next to the beach (El Almirante) is only open for lunch (...and possibly dinner), but was the best option for food at the hotel. Also, we're from New York, and the pizza at the 24-hour snack bar was shockingly good. Another option for dining are the formal, reservation-only restaurants; however, they tend to be booked in advance. Go to the buffet for dessert and try the ice cream. It was unlike any other I've had at a beach resort.

Much of the service team at Melia CSM was surprisingly bad-mannered. More what you'd expect from a Cuban hotel and not a Cuban/Spanish collaboration. Suggestions and complaints to the uppermost bosses were often met with a grimace and little would be done to correct the problem. One example would be the fact that hardly any of the doors on the balconies lock. We've all read about burglaries on Tripadvisor, so it's a legitimate concern. I spoke with management several times about this and the door remained broken. The service in the buffet are especially lackadaisical, and you'll often have to flag someone down to bring water to the table, clear plates, etc. Once more, not what you would expect from a five star Melia hotel.

The condition of the rooms was also alarming. We felt as if we were staying in an abandoned hotel. Things were falling apart left and right and the cleaning lady would leave noticeable scum and dirt after having passed through the room. I've posted photos from our room and they offer a better explanation. Our room keys weren't working properly upon check-in, which led to a three hour game of room changes, and we were able to get a glimpse at several rooms. They were all just as run-down and dirty. Some highlights include: missing tiles, stained sheets, dust and hair left on floor behind doors, broken shoe rack in closet, and more.

Another annoying thing about Melia CSM are the mosquitos. We went to another hotel on the key and found no mosquitos at all, which leaves us to believe they're not fumigating at all. When I say the mosquitos are a problem - I'm talking about being bitten in broad daylight at 2 o'clock in the afternoon.

Don't miss visiting Cayo Santa Maria due to this review. It's a truly gorgeous place. The beach at Melia CSM is flawless, but you're better off going to another hotel. I hope that Melia will find out what's happening at their hotel before it's too late and do what's necessary to restore it's five star standing. In the meantime, try Melia Las Dunas (next door to Melia CSM). We stayed there a few years ago and it was a much better experience.

To sum it all up:

*Pros:

-The beach.
-Pizza at the 24 hour snack bar.
-El Almirante (seafood restaurant near beach).
-Ice cream at the buffet.

*Cons:

-3 star hotel selection, service, & facilities.
-Unprofessional service staff.
-Terrible food at buffet.
-Mosquitos at all hours of day & night.
-Dirty, run-down facilities.

Room Tip: As with nearly every hotel that's made up of two story structures, get a room on the second floo...

This was our 3rd trip to the resort and have had a great experience each time. The food is the best we've had in Cuba and have been to many other resorts. Osbiel & Yoseet know how to take care of you at the pool and do an excellent job! The rooms are always clean and the restaurant staff are very attentive. The entertainment folks go out of their way to ensure you have a good time!!!

We will definitely be back and would recommend to anyone.

To start off, I would like to say this is a late review, we returned home on the 26/092012.

I will keep the review short to ensure no issues are looked over.

Upon arrival we were treated like royalty, traditional music, a welcome drink and NO CHECK IN!!!

On the transfer from the airport to the resort we were handed an envelope which contained our wrist bands and room keys. After a well needed beer in the bar we took a slow walk to our room, we were guided by members of staff around the complex (the animation team, Denise was extremely helpful) upon arrival to our room the bellboy bought our cases and gave us a quick tour of the room, explaining how to work the safe etc.

We were in block 11, this was a perfect location for us as it was central to the surroundings. We were close to the beach, pool, lobby, restarants, shops etc!!
Our room was very clean, the fridge was stocked with water, beer and soft drinks daily. The air conditioning was very powerful and the beds very comfortable. We showered and had a look around the grounds, the gardens were very well maintained and the entire surroundings were spotless. The pools were fantastic, great for all ages as a few of the members of our party were weak swimmers, they absolutely loved it!!

The buffet restaurant was very clean with a large variety of foods, from salads, to fruit, hot meals and "made to order meats/fish". Deserts were delicious and I highly recommend the pancakes YUMMY!!
Breakfast time they served everything you could think of, made to order omeletts, poached eggs, fried eggs, scrambled eggs, pancakes. They had bacon, beans, tomatoes etc.... Everything you could think of.

I recommend trying to fit in all ala-carte restaurants also, they were themed i.e the italien, french etc and the food was very well presented, very tasty, also being a chef myself the standards of cleaning/hygiene were very satisfying. The Japanese was my favourite, the sushi was so fresh!! The chefs were also very entertaining to watch as they cooked on the grill infront of us, they offer seconds!!!!

The snack bar/pool bar served up a set menu, so "special of the day" or they would have the usual, burgers, pizza, sandwiches etc.
The beach bar had an open buffet which served salads, fruit and hot meals i.e pasta, potatoes and mixed veg, a cooked meat/fish of some sort, they also have a BBQ which served sausage, pork steaks, chicken breast, fish etc.... This was very well cooked so rest assured any reviews that critise the standards of food prep/cooking.

The lobby bar was well set out, the tables were all very spaced out so you didn't get the feeling of sitting on each others laps. It was devided into 3 sections, the main lobby as you entered reception was very quiet, a great place to sit and chill, the middle section did get a little noisy but this gave the feeling of a great atmosphere. The section outside had many tables/chairs for watching the shows!!

All staff were very attentive and greeted you with a smile. The waiters made sure you were never left thirsty. The entertainment team (animation team) were all a great laugh and what I liked most was, they would never make you feel uneasy. If you didn't wish to partake in any activities, they would leave you be. Although if you were game for anything they had so much planned. Dancing, tai-chi, archery, bowling... you name it, they would always make time for you.

It was also very assuring seeing the General Manager of the hotel walking around the premises, overlooking what went on, making sure standards were high, dining in the same restaraunts as guests, eating the same food as guests, always on hand to give help and advise.

I think this covers all I have to say
This isn't my first visit to Cuba, we have vacated in Varadero several times and fancied a change. The usual hotel we stop at is Sol Palmeras (also through Thomas Cook) Varadero and to be honest, I came away expecting the same!! This hotel exceeding my expectations and opened my eyes to a new kind of Cuba. Very open, spacious, clean!! Perfect beach, stunning grounds, what more can you ask for?

If you wish to visit Cuba, and want a well needed relaxing holiday then I highly recommend this resort, YOU WILL NOT BE DISSAPOINTED!!

Room Tip: We were in block 11, this was a perfect location as everything was on hand. Right next to the beach...

Dear Peter

Thank you very much for your comments, and I agree with you Denise is a big point at the hotel, she is here from the beginning and every body loves her.

You say you are a chef, this hotel is "only" 358 rooms, not too big for the Kay but we have four a la carte restaurants, I promise you it is an added value, it is not normal for this quantity of rooms to have that number of restaurants, all of them different but all of them with a different charm.

I hope the next time you come, you can enjoy even more among us.

Thank you again and best regards.

I stayed at this hotel with my wife from August 26 for two weeks.
We arrived at hotel to champagne reception and very friendly staff who were more than happy to point you out the direction to your room or even take you there in one of the hotel buggy taxis. We were in room 2101 which was huge clean and more than we expected with all the items you may need to make your stay comfortable.
Restaurants :- Buffet, there was always a good choice of food on offer with a fresh meat and fish counter that was cooked for you while you wait. There was also a rice/seafood chef Geovanni cooked the best calamari I've ever eaten with your own choice of spices etc. There was also pasta and salad bar so enough choice for everyone. The waiters were also excellent and very friendly Anna was there with our drinks before we'd even sat down, so what more can you ask for .
We ate in all the Al A Carte restaurants first was the Mediterranean, it was a 5 course set menu and each course was just the perfect amount and very tasty. (Obviously not for everyone being set menu depending on what you like). We would like to make a special mention to out waitress in this restaurant, Chevely, she is one of the loveliest, happy waiters we have met anywhere on our travels and have stayed in touch.
Next was the Japanese, not the best we've been in (Mexico / Jamaica ) was better but the food and service (thanks to Chevely again) was of a good standard and you got good portions.
Next the French, my wife loved this restaurant so much we went twice, the decor, staff and food was first class. She recommends the chateau briande.
Next the Italian, not the best Italian I've eaten in but the food was tasty and the service as in all restaurants was very good.
For lunch you had a choice of the buffet, the snack bar which did lovely pizzas and our favourite the grill bar on the beach where you could have fish or as much off the B B Q as you wanted and very tasty it was.
So all in all we were very happy with both the quality of food and the service in all restaurants.
The swimming pools were always clean including the areas around them, the gardeners work non stop to keep the resort looking lovely. There was always free sun beds but you need to be down early to get some with shade. The swim up bar was fab and the bar staff were always happy and Youseff who was one of the pool waiters must walk miles in a day making sure you are alright for drinks.
The entertainment staff were amazing and work ridiculous hours to keep you amused and entertained, a special mention here goes to Aral and Genny these guys went out of their way to help you, so a big thank you to you guys.
The lobby bar was very pleasant and you never seemed to have to wait to long to get a drink, if its busy double up your drinks.
Thomas Cook rep, Jorge was very well informed and again had a smile and was always there to ensure you had all you needed and to assist you with any help you may require.
Forgot to mention the beach, although it is very beautiful we didn't spend much time there as you were quite a distance away from facilities such as toilets, bar etc. Not a major problem but just a preference of liking the pool area better.
Now the minor negative points. Mosquitos, yes there are a lot but we found the only real bad area was if you was sat in the outer bar area, I got quite badly bitten but not enough to worry about.
Now my major gripe, and this goes out to all the moaning Brits. Before you go to Cuba remember that it's a communist run country with an embargo with the USA, so you won't get Burger King or McDonalds etc, also due to the embargo some foods are harder to get. So if you want fish and chips, KFC, or McDonalds etc your better off going to Blackpool or Skegness, where you will be happy with other moaning Brits instead of ruining the holidays of people who know how to make the best of things.
All in all we had a fabulous holiday. We were more than looked after by the staff (now friends) who work ridiculous hours for 25 Pesos (roughly £17.50 month plus well earned tips)
We would happily go back and we advise that you ignore the negative reviews written by the whingers who'd be better off at Butlins Skegness.
PS some of the whingers that moved to Las Dunas wanted to come back to this hotel as rooms much bigger and hotel nicer etc.
Thanks again for making our holiday so memorable and were sorry if we've forgot to mention anybody, we hope to come back and see all our friends in the future Kim and Den.
