I recently travelled to Santa Maria and stayed at the memories paraiso azul resort !!! The staff are amazing and the most friendly people I have ever met!!!. They would bend over backwards to do anything for you. The beach is BEAUTIFUL !!!!! :) There are tons of activities such as paddle boats and even lounging by the pool was terrific. There is a little market just a few minutes walk from the resort where locals have their homemade gifts..it was great !! I can't wait to go back again someday :)!!!! I recommend it to anyone !

On our stay, we enjoyed the shallow, clear waters at the beach. And the food was the best I've had anywhere else in Cuba.
Everything else was very good, but the water and food were excellent!
The Drive from the airport was a little longer than usual (approx. 90 min). but it wasn't bad. You got to see some small town sites along the way.

We stayed at the Memories Paraiso Azul last week of June 2014 and we are going to visit this resort again during winter time and for sure even more! Memories are number 1 for us. This resort is our piece of heaven. We are not going to visit other Cuban resorts anymore since we have been there. We have found the best place to stay - Memories Paraiso Azul, and thank you so much for your hospitality! It was our first time there and we are really impressed and really miss those all people who work there. Everyone there was so kind and friendly for us and we will never forget about this! The girls who work in the lobby bar -thank you soooooooo much for the best Mohito I have ever drunk in my entire life. I have been in so many resorts but the best Mohito is just served in Memories Paraiso ! Secondly, the beach is more than gorgeous. Absolutely magnificent. I have never seen before such a white powder sand, turquoise, shallow water and there was always enough sunbeds for people. Rooms are kept very clean and fresh towels are provided each day.The food was more than excellent. A lot of delicious fish, sea foods sushi, fried bananas... and more! The staff tried their very best to accommodate guests. We always found something to eat at the buffet and we definitely did not starve on this trip. One more time, thank you Memories so much and see you very soon.

We have been coming to Memories Paraiso Azul for our annual vacation for many years, because the beaches are amazing, the staff are like family. Every staff member goes out of there way to ensure our vacation is unforgettable, and the number one reason we just keep coming back.

We highly reccommend MEMORIES PARAISO AZUL to all our friends and family. Many of which have since experienced this fabulous resort for themselves.

Everything, hotel. room, meals and drinks and special beach are beautiful. The staff was very nice. Beautiful 2 weeks. Next time I'll come with my 25 friends.
But, it would be nice if there are doctor, pharmacy and massage, on the site, in the hotel "Memories".

This is my fifth (5th) visit to Cuba and first (1st) at this resort. The resort is 90+ minutes from the airport as advertised.

The Good:
- The Beach. Glorious beach. Azure waters, white powder sand, shallow water entry great for families with young children.
- The staff. Very nice and friendly with young children. Room is kept clean daily and fresh towels are provided. Tips will enhance the experience.
- The grounds. Very well maintained gardens.
- The drinks. Easy enough to get the attention of the bar staff. Very friendly and welcomed service. Staff fills your room mini-bar fridge with 1 bottle of water (1.5L), beer and pop on a daily basis.

The Bad:
- The Food. Cuban style. Very similar buffet food everyday. Lots of grease, pork, rice and underwhelming vegetables. You do have option of grill stations serving fresh pork, (unchewable) beef, and fresh fish. Some rather questionable food handling practices across all stations. Recycling of food was obvious - last night's hotdogs became bacon wrapped breakfast sausage. Some items looked like they were beginning to fossilize on the trays. Our family did not get sick however others at the resort did. You do have the option of eating at a la carte restaurants but basically it is the same grade of food but brought to your table instead. The Mediterranean restaurant did not have some of the items on their menu. There was a lobster night that was very impressive (some people we met got sick afterwards).
- Some of the tourists. Pushy, sometimes rude to the service staff. Really? You flew how many hours to vent your life’s frustrations on the underpaid and overworked Cuban staff? Next time do us all a favour and stay home and call someone who cares…
- Not much else to do around. Great for families with young kids. Would get boring quickly for teenagers or young adults. But then again if you wanted Disney you should have gone there!

The Ugly:
- The resort infrastructure. Our first room looked like a horror story from Aliens 2 except replace said aliens for squashed misquotes on the walls and ceilings (a bloody gory mess). The bathroom was not only dated but falling apart. We changed rooms to a cleaner room however the infrastructure is beyond dated. The doors on our closet were broken and could not be opened (had to pick them up and move them to the side). Tile is cracked and broken in the bathroom. Toilets mostly flush. Patio doors don’t lock. Small CRT television in your room (programming is good). It’s all somewhat functional but it is very obvious there has been zero investment in the building infrastructure in the past decade. Not sure if it’s a national, corporate or local management issue. But it shows.
- The beds. The reason the Revolucion happened! It reaches new heights in discomfort.
- Weird and Questionable behavior. On the way into the country, my wife’s passport mysteriously vanished at Customs. It was found about 20 minutes later. On the way out of the country, the airport tax staff conveniently misplaced some of the money I had paid her. She shoved a 20 CUC bill under some papers and demanded I pay her an extra 20. I pointed at the papers and asked her to ‘check again’ politely. She was shocked to find the bill. Questionable behavior.

Overall you get what you pay for. This is not expensive resort and for the price it is a good deal. However caveat emptor. If you expect 4 ½ stars worth of North American service look elsewhere. This is at best a 2 ½ star experience. However you would be very hard pressed to find a better beach anywhere else. Trade-offs, it’s part of life. Don’t forget your sunscreen.

Room Tip: If you want a quiet stay, choose rooms away from the center area and closer to the sides of the reso...

We stayed at the Memories resort the last week of March 2014 for a week and will be returning.

If you are very overweight or have health issues, be forewarned there is a TON of walking as the resort is large. It's good to walk off the meals and drinks. :)

Our room was clean and comfortable which is all we look for when travelling as we spend very little time in the room. The grounds are very very well kept and we loved all the gorgeous flowers.

The food was was okay and the staff tried their very best to accommodate guests. We always found something to eat at the buffets. The only ala carte that was not very good was the Cuban. (Disappointing to me as I was most excited to try this one) BUT, we went to the buffet and found something. We definitely did not starve on this trip nor did we over indulge at meal times!

The staff. The only issue with the staff was a couple rude bartenders at the lobby bar. We were Diamond club memebers and paid to have the premium alcohol and you'd think that the drinks came out of the bartenders pay because they did not want to give it to us. Every other members of the staff from the grounds people to the front desk were kind, and very friendly and we will return because of them.

Tips for travellers: If you are particular about condiments, bring travel sizes as they don't have what we are used to in Canada. Band aids, first aid items or medications-bring or you won't be able to get what you need. We could not find a band aid! The cups for drinks are very small, flimsy and not evironmentally friendly. We will definitely bring our own travel mugs next time because you can't find those either.

Wifi-We did not use this service, but it was very, very slow according to other guests. We just texted with our families back home.

The beach-be prepared to see one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. This alone would warrant another visit.

If you're looking to "unplug" from your everyday, this is the place! Thanks Memories, we'll see you again!
