stayed at memories (April 1 to April 8) really nice resort. bring bug spray for night time. pool was nice but pool bartenders needed to be more aware of patrons in the pool. TIP them and your fine.beach was fabulous. clean sand clean water with a beach bar and a burger hut. hotel room was clean and house keepers kept fridge stoked which was nice. I got diamond club which allowed us late check out and our service around the hotel you can see was better then standard accommodations.FOOD was cuba standard, you wont starve. Overall the hotel and staff were great, the complaints you will hear about are mainly from the ignorant vacationers and the towel game they play with chairs.

Room Tip: building 35 room 39 second floor room which has best pool view and really close to lobby and especia...

We stayed at Memories Azul from April 6-13, 2012 and had a great time!! I don't understand all the negative reviews. The food was great, service was great, beach was great, room nice and clean - no complaints at all. We heard people talking about getting lots of bug bites but we never had one bite. The shows in the evening were nice, especially the ones that involved the audience participation. There was a lot of choices to eat at the buffet, fruit, turkey, soup, fish, pork, pizza and the fried bananas. At the beach grills you could get pizza, chicken on a bun or hot dogs. They even had a guy going around on the beach with a basket of fresh cookies on one day and passing them out. Every evening a band would play on the steps of the theater until 8pm. There was one band of young guys who were awesome. They always ended up playing an encore. People go here to relax, enjoy the sun. It is a big resort and we had a lot of walking because we were in bungalow 61 by the beach but we are walkers anyway so that was not big deal to us. You can be picked up by a cart to drive you where you want to go. The people who complain about everything would probably complain about something even at the Ritz Carlton. Cubans are laid back and you should be too. YOUR ON VACATION!!! RELAX!!! Would definately go here and again and will recommend it to anyone

I have never done a review before. When I read reviews I often think people may be too picky.
I will make this short.
This is not a 5 star resort you will be disappointed if you think it is, it is a stretch to say a 4 star. Beach is beautiful, food was good.
Rooms not cleaned well or water brought to room or fridge restocked.
Many calls to customer service , sunwing rep and diamond club rep spoken to in first few days there. Stopped bothering as it did no good and only made me very upset.
Never did I lose my temper maybe I should have but thats not me. Tips didn't make a difference on service, and a lot was spent. More unhappy workers than happy. Don't go here there are other resorts on island that are a true five and 4 star.

Room Tip: Building 60 is far from everything and constuction going on behind building. Building 55 looked li...

Cons: organizational issues (we got our room key and someone was still in the room when we opened the door). Very annoying, especially with 2 kids under 3 years old.
also: we all had some moderate stomach issues and feel like the lack of drinking water in the rooms was likely to blame.

Pros: super safe, super clean, 10/10 beach, lots to do, so many great food and drink options, the staff was the best we have every experienced. The Santa Clara Airport is great. The kids club is awesome (except too many parents use it as an all day babysitting service for their out-of-control kids).

Summary: we'll go back again. Even thinking about going there for every vacation. Has everything and is of good value. Just relax when you arrive because they make a lot of arrival mistakes but will be flawless for the rest of the week.

Room Tip: All the same. Pay more if you care about looking at the ocean from your balcony. Diamond club is w...

I do not understand the negative reviews at all, this hotel is an excellent choice.

The beach is the best I ever saw
The hotel is very clean, the staff were awesome
Entertainment was great, you can always find something to eat, there were lots of choices.
I loved it and will return some day.. every single staff I came across were very helpful and pleasant.
The pools were beautiful, the only complaint I have is the other tourists, I had a towel stolen.. there is lots of plastic cups on the beach at the end of the day, and people just complaining non stop about the food.
Well I am not going to write a long dragged out review. I give it a 5++++ met all my expectations

Let see where to begin? When we first got there it was Dark.. after a long day of travelling we arrived to abeautiful clean room with lots of room to move arround in. In the morning we woke up to the ocean and a very hot day! Opened the curtains and had a spectacular view of the Ocean and the pool. We stayed in building 61 rm 77 we were the farthest from the main dinning hall possible and we Loved it the pool was only steps away and so was the beach! this is the perfect location for a non Diamond member. 24/7 snack bar is rate there and the pizza hut was along the walk to the beach.

Diamond Club: Is it worth it? Well depending on how you look at it... We enjoyed it.. we liked the beach area with the huts and the service of drinks and the reserved chairs for the diamond members. its a fairly close walk to the lunch buffet so there was no inconvenience really.. Towels in the room everyone gets them, free safe, rum, and the special check in.. well everyone get all that. The additional A la cart.. there isnt a need really.. the buffet is spectacular. So weigh your options.

Food : The reviews do not do this resort justice... the food was really good steak, chicken, fish, fries salad, you name it .. the favorite for us was the rice at supper.. absolutely Delicious.... The A la cartes were ok. we both ate well but for Cuba they were good nothing like home cooking though. We Never ate lunch by the time we got our breakfast and hit the beach and relaxed it was lunch time.. we were still full .. eggs done any style and what ever else you want. Do bring : Ketchup if you like Hinez & peanut butter & Jam or Cheez whiz.

Resort Overall This resort is Huge! WE LOVE THE STAFF AT THE LOBBY BAR!! PLAVO, LEO, LEONARDO are the best... they made our stay very enjoyable and henry the cart guy was so sweet showing pictures of his little girl. This reaort is alot bigger than the resorts in Dominican if you are not up for walking please let the hotel know befor going by emailing them they will do your best to accomodate! The manager is vert attentive and is willing to make sure your stay is very accomodating. This resort has to have the best cappacino ever!! its a must try. As for the staff some are great some not so great.. but if you worked 16 hour days and 2-3 hrs of travel on top of that you wouldnt be so happy go lucky either.. But there wasnt a rude worker to be had really maybe not over the moon to be there but Not at all rude in my opinion.

Beach and the water: All I can say is wow! this by far makes the resort... Clear blue water nice soft sand like icing sugar.. and no seaweed. did I say no seaweed..My hubby loved this about the water here.... water was calm and rough on a variety of days ... I wouldn't even call it rough.. waves yes ... no undertow.. the waves were fun to play in. but most days it was nice and calm and the water was warm.

The Plaza:Very beautiful.. and lots of souvenirs... and no need to haggle most prices are wonderful! Very safe.. and very Clean.

I rated the fitness center and the spa .. but the're in the Plaza. Also one last thing .. there is a one and a half hour drive from the airport to the hotel and the bus IS air conditioned.

Tips: Ask for building 52,53,54 if you don't like to walk But be warned the theater is beside these buildings its not quiet. same for people with kids the kiddie pool is around there as well.
Do bring: Extras if you want them...eg: ketchup, Cheese Whiz, Peanut butter.... etc...

Last but not Least: YOUR VACATION IS WHAT YOU MAKE IT!!! SIT BACK AND ENJOY!!

I

As a family of four (including 2 teenage children) we have just returned from a week at the Memories Azul in Cayo Sanata Maria, and I think we'd all agree that it was a fabulous holiday when all said and done.

We read many of the reviews before we left, and went with an open mind with regard to the food - which I have to say was not good - whether at the buffet or a la carte. It was however the only thing that let this holiday down - and it will not be what lingers in our memories.

What we will remember - fondly - is the staff, the hotel, the sun, sea and sand, all of which were absolutely fabulous.

The sea/beach. As a British family having spent most of our lives in Europe, we have been lucky enough to visit some wonderful resorts such as Greece and Italy - but the beaches and the sea in Cuba knocked all these into a cocked hat. Believe all the photos you see - they are not 'Photoshop'ed - the sea really is the most stunning shade of turquoise blue, and the beach at Cayo Santa Maria is something like 11 kms long - it is clean, wide and totally devoid of anyone hassling you to buy trinkets. The only people you will see are fellow tourists.

The staff. Do take things to give to the staff - this was something we picked up on from the reviews, but would probably do slightly differently if we go again. Wages are appallingly low, so all the staff, whether maid, gardner or waiter, are completely reliant on the tips and goodies they are given by tourists whilst in season - much more so that in places such as Mexico. Much of the money they accrue in tips has to see them through the out of season period - before they can re-apply for their jobs for the next season. So take anything you can carry in your cases, from clothing you don't want, towels, through to soaps, toothpastes, razors etc, and pens and writing paper - a block of A4 plain paper even. Until you have seen it and heard from the very people serving you at the hotel, I know all this sounds ridiculous - but it is very real - the poverty is shocking, and particularly visible on the bus trip to the resort. So anything you can take is so gratefully received it brings a lump to your throat as you give it to them. And don't be shy about tipping - typically one finds oneself regularly tipping the room maid, fridge man (who replenishes the fridge daily), the staff who serve your meals, and the guys who serve drinks at the variety of bars available. Don't forget the ground staff too - they are often overlooked as they are not as visible, but their needs are clearly as great as those whom it is easier to remember about. A dollar (which equates to one convertible Peso) is, relatively speaking, so insignificant to us, yet worth so much to them.

Travel. Tour operator was Sunwing, who again, all said and done did a good job. Both our flights were delayed - that's life, and probably not entirely in their control. But we were looked after and fed well on the plane - leg room if you are tall not great though (pack 'em in, sell 'em cheap). There is then a Sunwing rep available at the hotel pretty much all the time to answer any questions you may have.

Trips. Book your trips as soon as you arrive - we missed out through delaying our booking. Suggest you look closely at the day trip to Havana and the day outing on a large Cat - both weigh in at around $100-$135 pp so if you're taking a family of 4 it soon adds up - but they seem to be pretty popular. Personally, I would suggest the day trip to Havana is likely to leave longer lasting memories that the cat trip. Remember you have free Hobbie Cats on the beach to use (with free instructor); there is a lobster a la carte meal also available to you during your stay; the 'dolphin' bit is pretty orchestrated (caged, you don't swim with them, and it's about 20 minutes worth); and you share the cat with up to 70 other people .... so is the cat trip worth the additional $100 pp - your call.

Diamond Club. We didn't book it, and didn't feel disadvantaged at all by not doing so - at any stage. I'd save your money.

Departure. We did however shell out $20 pp to have access to the VIP Lounge on departure - this may sound pretentious, but your departure day is a long one, and if you are returning to Calgary as we were, you leave the hotel 5 hours before your flight - so you end up with about 3 hours to kill at the airport - and the airport is pretty basic. The VIP lounge gives you fast track check in, and a lounge to relax in with comfy seats, and food (edible) and drink on tap until your flight. Friends we had made during our week told us they regretted not booking it as they watched us reclining in our chairs through the glass partition wall. Just a thought.

All in all - if you haven't been before and are thinking of going, don't let the reviews put you off. I would suggest you go with an open mind and a suitcase full of goodies. Keep your expectations low, and if Mother Nature does her bit and keeps the wind down and the sun out, you will end up having a wonderful time - it's pretty much a guarantee - just take a view on the food!

More than happy to take any questions if there are any.

Room Tip: Rooms on north of complex are close to both pool and sea.
