“Excellent vacation!”

Travellers: couple,late 30's. Travel 2-3 times per year. Been to Dominican (3), Cuba(3), Jamaica(1), Mayan Riviera(3), Bahamas(1), Curacao(1), Florida(4).

Flight: Sun Wing. On time, Friendly, Hot meals, snacks, Free headphones, hot moist cloth, chocolate mints. Definitely our favorite and second time using Sunwing this year!

Santa Clara Airport: Open air, small and easy to navigate. Easy to locate your agent as they are in uniform and holding signs. There is a man selling beers for the ride. Buccanero is $1 peso. Heineken is $2 peso. They take Canadian dollars if you have no CUC.

There is a bank in this airport if you have time to exchange your money but no necessary.
Exchange rage when there was 1.168 CDN to CUC( Cuban convertible peso) You can exchange at hotel with reception desk.
Airport has a VIP lounge. You pay bartender 20 CUC when you enter and this gets you AC, comfy seats with food, snacks and drinks unlimited while waiting for flight. We took advantage of this as our flight was delayed 3 hours and was well worth it!
Small souvenir shop here and duty free for last minute shopping.

Shuttle Transport:
Comfortable with AC. The 1.5hr drive was fine. The agent is informing you of protocol once you arrive at your destination and different cultural sites along the way.

the shuttle stops at 3-4 resorts in Santa Clara to drop off passengers. It is quick and maybe time for a pee break if necessary

Resort Arrival:
Grounds clean and beautiful. Not as GRANDE as larger resorts we have been to but still pretty. Entrance is clean with marble flooring and dark wood accents. Bags were unloaded efficiently and we were greeted promptly with smiles instructed to have a seat and someone would be with us shortly. We were given a welcome morning mimosa drink and waited no more than 2 minutes. Our assigned butler was busy but YUNNY introduced herself to us. She gave us our room keys, resort map and indicated restaurants open at the present time while rooms were being made up. Then we met one(of two) of our butlers, LUCAS. He took us to our room, pointing out interests along the way. Very friendly and great English. Showed us our room and its different offerings. Pointed out contact information that is available 24 hrs should we ever need anything!

Mini fridge : Stocked with pop and beer and water. LAZARO filled it daily. I left a note asking for additional Cristol beer and it was fulfilled no problems. He even asked us one day if we required anything more! Excellent service ( not sure how he knew who we were?)

ROOM:
Stayed in 1122. Close to everything. Bed was super comfy. Jetted tub, outdoor shower
(heavenly). Balcony with a moderate ocean view. Two level suite with sitting area. TV, hair dryer, shampoo, soap, shower gel, moisturizer. NO CODITIONER ladies so bring your own! As well NO ALARM CLOCK.

The hair dryer had an outlet we were able to plug our phone chargers and camera chargers into.

BUTLERS: We had excellent butlers JAVIER and LUCAS. They rotate two days on , two days off. JAVIERr was like a ninja and popped up everywhere!!!! Always asking if our stay was good and if we needed anything. LUCAS was excellent as well but a little more shy! Daily at 7AM Javier was at the bottom of our walkway to greet us and ask how we were. Never had to look for him. I am pretty sure they would do anything you asked! I was spoiled with daily Chilean wine with a cheese plate in my room for evenings. One night I was welcomed with flower petals leading to a bubble bath in my room. Very romantic. THANK YOU JAVIER! Our friends had JOEL as their butler. Even he would ask how our stay was and if we needed anything!!!!
Room was cleaned daily by ALINA - excellent , efficient and neat. She even "tidied" my suitcase folding closes and arranging my shoes. Something I have never experienced at any 5 star resort. Normally they would clean around my heap of clothes on the floor and messy opened suitcase.
T The same with night time turn down service. Two mints left on pillow with a note wishing you sweet dreams and my mess tidied AGAIN!!!! I was falling in love with this resort! :)

FOOD:
I will admit the food is not as good as I have had at other resorts but still suffice. I didn't starve!! Menu's are a la carte, with exception of small breakfast buffet - eggs scrambled or hardboiled, poached, hash brown patties, bacon and sausage, beans daily. plus an assortment of fresh fruit, dried cereal, yogurts and milk with juices. A small selection of fresh baked bread with toaster and small desert morning croissants. Plus a table of deli meats and cheeses with tomato and lettuce. HOW CANT YO FIND SOMETHING TO EAT HERE? They had ketchup, mustard and A1 sauce if you asked. IF you did not like the cooking methods of the buffet at breakfast you then order off the menu to have made to order omelettes. MARY was fast and efficient. Sat us and remembered out morning ritual of mimosas and cafe' con leche Americana. No complaints here!

One day for lunch we went to MELIA LAS DUNAS to experience the buffet( I stayed at this resort two years ago). It was a quick reminder of why we didn't choose to go back. Noisy, people rude and pushing you out of the way to get that last piece of chicken and massive! Food under heat lamps for who knows how long with people sweating and sneezing over it. No thanks... and back to MBV we went will full appreciation of the smallness and intimate setting we were getting used to!

The evening restaurants, Los Caribes, Navigantes were good. The lovely DIANA is a gem and has an infectious laugh you can hear anywhere! Again, the menu is limited and you don't have 20 selections like you do in Canada. So that being said, IF you don't like the fish offered ( I am not a fish lover) then order TWO appetizers and vice versa. Which I did and staff have no problems doing that. And if all else fails go back to your room and order room service!
It is a small resort with only 105 rooms so their menu is small. You want big then go to a bigger resort with bigger mouths to feed. You will get it! The wine was good... one night I was offered a CAB andidnt like it so they brought another red much better... no problems!!!

LESTER is a fabulous water and goes out of his way to make your dinner memorable!

The staff arranged a surprise birthday cake for our friends 40th bday. It was super! All staff from both restaurants took part! The cake was excellent. Combined with a band marching in and singing!

We decorated our lounge area as I took down balloons and streamers for a friends 40th bday celebration - he had no idea. Grounds helper YASMANNY even helped me at 5AM. and all staff took part in this daily celebration making it one to remember! Such great people!

LOBBY BAR: open 24 hours. DELVIS and MARIO make a mean Cappucino with Crème Catalina ( Canadian baileys) and a yummy Café Frio ( Iced Cap). These two gentleman are super friendly and aim to please. Some light appies are there around 3-4PM and plantain chips to take off the hunger edge prior to supper plans. There is a piano here with entertainment pre supper around 7-8PM. Great meeting place. We even arranged for breakfast here at 5AM as we waited for our shuttle to leave. It over looks the pool and is location to most of the evening entertainment. No huge Anamacion team in theatres you see at larger resorts. A smaller venue much more enjoyable- flamenco dancers, water ballet in the pool one night, Cuban singers. etc Loved it.
POOL:
two pools- a quiet one and main one where aerobics were daily, NAVI was the instructor, and volleyball at 3PM, and the pool bar. The COORS LIGHT BOYS - ORESTES and OSMANNY were definitely a high light! So much fun.. and hard workers. Never forget a face and always had your drink ready! The pool grill is manned by YASMANNY - super yummy food and always greeted with a smile. White fish, pork chicken sausage vegetables . Starts at 4PM but I admit you have to get there fast as it goes quick. If you wish something else Orestes or Osmanny will order you a pizza or burger and fries to have it delivered to your pool lounger no problem. Just ask! This is where you met most of the people while sitting at the bar! You never had to save a lounger with towel. Cabana beds were also there for your liking. Pool floaties available as well.

BEACH: the sand is not as ``powdery fine`` as Dominican but white and beautiful. I would bring water shoes for long distance walking if I returned as it was uncomfortable on my feet. You can walk for 20 minutes to the next resort( Melia Las Dunas) or just to beach comb. Stunning!!! Loungers were always free with palapas. There is a man who will get your lounger for you and one beach bar butler who comes by. He has a bit of a distance to walk so to avoid long delays between drinks just order TWO. Problem solved right? Great snorkelling here lots to see. Don't waste money on paying for snorkel excursion when it is right at our fingertips!

TIPS: not a tip hungry resort with staff hovering over you waiting. We did tip for great service!

The gardener ARMANDO works hard daily and greeted us with a smile daily. He made us coconut drinks on days fresh cut! What a sweet man! We had leather work gloves we gave to him. He never forgot us!!!!

Conclusion:
I will admit my first 1-2 days I was a little hesitant as per what I was used to. But this resort grew on us fast. The staff are fabulous. Making your stay very personal and intimate. you get to know them well (if you ask) as they get to know you. You meet many fabulous people and make friends during your stay who you see again and again(unlike bigger resorts where you don't see the same person twice.) I was told resort was full yet didn't seem crowded. Loved this resort, looking at returning soon. Only downfall was we had a catamaran booked via Sun Wing and they did not show up to get us :( However we were refunded with no problems and just made our way to the pool that day!!!! Thanks for LB and JY for making this a fabulous vacation xxoo!

Room Tip: small flies at nite, take bug spray or lotion. I was only one out of four people with bug bites...

My husband and I enjoyed a one week stay at this beautiful resort. It was the smallest resort we have been to and the first adults only. We enjoyed the personal service provided by everyone working at the resort, they knew you by name your very first day there! We enjoyed the short walk to - well everything. We love to snorkel and really enjoyed being able to walk out and snorkel right off the beach. There was no need to reserve chairs, reservations for dinner were simple, food was very good and the servers really were outstanding. We did a couple of excursions - unrelated to the hotel and enjoyed them thoroughly, a catamaran, snorkel tour - it was great, wild dolphins followed us and some of the other guest were fortunate enough to get photos of the dolphins, they were very curious about his camera - we also did a private tour into town with two very lovely local gentleman (son and father) the dad drove us in a 1950's car and the son spoke very very good engligh and seemed to know everyone and gave us the grand tour - AWESOME day. The butlers made every effort to meet our every needs, personal notes with little gifts, bubble baths and champagne, very romantic. Speaking of romantic - the sax player at sunset is very cool to see - we enjoyed this much more than we thought we would - loved it! The night time entertainment at the lobby was great as well, more intimate and we got to know some wonderful people at the resort from all over - what a great group of people. The pools were both great, as are the day beds, beaches were amazing, soft sand and cold drinks - it was quiet which we loved hearing the water vs music all the time. We did venture to a sister resort and after spending a few days at Melia Buenavista, we realized how accustomed to the peace and serenity and found the music, the lines and the sheer amount of people everywhere was a little overwhelming. Still a great resort - but we preferred to be back at Melia - it was as if it was our own private beach - I felt pampered and well rested after this vacation.

Room Tip: Upgrading to an ocean view is definitely worth the extra money.

This was our fourth time to Cuba and it was out favorite resort by far. They call it the 'old folks home' but we absolutely loved the peace and quiet. When we booked the resort we somehow missed the fact that there was no dinner buffet so that took us by surprise. There are 2 a la carte restaurants here or you have full access to the buffets and a la carte restaurants at the 2 other Melia resorts and there is free shuttle transportation to those resorts. The Mexican and Japanese restaurants were our favorites.

The hour and a half bus ride from the airport concerned me but quite honestly I slept most of the way so it really wasn't that bad.

You did not have to get up at 7 am to reserve a spot by the pool or beach, there was always a spot - sun or shade - available. The sunset beach was our favorite beach. There was no drink service at that beach but it was so beautiful and peaceful and close to our room that we didn't mind. The water there is nice and calm and shallow and once the tide goes out you can walk a long ways around the one side of the beach previously under water. The other 2 beaches are deeper and have more waves if scuba diving and wave jumping is your thing.

Our room was cleaned morning and night. We don't tend to be out late so a couple times the night maid hadn't been to our room yet, not a big deal so we just put up the do not disturb sign.

We had 2 butlers - Javier and Lucas - they work 16 hour days ever other day after and have a 2 hour bus ride each way to get to work - and they were always extremely helpful. About halfway though the week they left us a plate of fruit in our room to enjoy mid-afternoon. The next day after our massages they left another plate of fruit and drew us a bath in the Jacuzzi tub and our last night they left us a bottle of wine. They really know how to make you feel pampered.

Our pick up time for the return trip was 5:30pm so we weren't able to have supper that night. We were able to arrange - through our butler - a packed lunch which included hot ham and cheese sandwiches, pastries (so yummy) and water and juice. Such a nice touch!!!

This resort was the cleanest resort we have ever stayed at. One day a lizard did sneak into our room when we opened the door but there really isn't anything anyone can do about that:)

The only issue we had was that when we booked our vacation our package showed that it guaranteed free late checkout until 4pm. That was not honored so we had to pay 8cuc per hour for a late checkout. I just suggest double checking your included amenities with your travel agent before you leave.

We did not go on any excursions as we were there to do nothing but relax. We did go to the market just down the road via the free shuttle bus and were able to pick up a few small souvenirs. We were only gone for a couple of hours and it was a nice little market.

We would go back tomorrow if we could!!

Room Tip: The outdoor showers were amazing but I'd suggest a first floor room. You could see through the...

This hotel was absolutely amazing from start to finish. We arrived around 11am after a flight from Havana to the local airport Las Brujas. Upon arrival, you walk into a nice, modern lobby with a smell of incense (if I could have taken that home, I would have). You sit down and check in whilst a welcome cocktail is handed to you. Perfect! You are then introduced to your Butler. You have two butlers during your stay who work alternate days, so you only really need to know two faces. Ours were Aylin and Belkis, who were both friendly, wonderful women who always greeted us with a smile :)

Butler Service- Don't be put off by the term butler service. They do not follow you around with a parasol. They are a point of contact. You have to book your evening meal with them every day before noon, which I thought would involve running around looking for them, but Aylin and Belkis were always outside the breakfast restaurant every morning. They will also arrange for your minibar to be restocked.

Rooms- The rooms are outstanding! There are only 105 rooms but whilst you're there, it feels like there are only about 30! Very spacious and clean. Huge beds and a pillow menu so you get what is right for you. The jacuzzi bath is vast, and you can pay 10CUCs for an in spa bath experience which your butler will run for you. My highlight was the outdoor shower. Great water pressure, and always the right weather for it! Walk in wardrobe, lots of toiletries, beach bag and towels, robes, slippers. Everything you could need. Our balcony looked over the quiet pool, and because of well placed palm trees, it felt private still. From looking at the rooms, the ones overlooking sunset beach would be amazing, but I really don't think any of them have a bad location. You can tell it is very well thought out.

Pools/Beach- What can I say, these are what we all came for! Because there are only 105 rooms, you're never without a sunbed either by the two pools or the three beaches. There is also plenty of shade if the heat gets too much in the afternoon. The beaches are stunning. The main beach has a bar, and even that is really quiet. Lovely places for snorkelling. There are two pools- the main pool and the quiet pool. The main pool plays a bit of chill out music, and does some water activities like volleyball and aqua aerobics. But most of the time it is quiet. It has a great pool bar and BBQ. We tended to be around the quiet pool as it was near our room, and we had it to ourselves most of the day!

Restaurants- The food is the only thing that lets itself down here, but it is not enough for me to downgrade the place a star, and this is because the food in Cuba overall isn't amazing. They run out of things in Cuba sometimes, so we approached with an open mind. There are three restaurants. There is the breakfast and lunch buffet one (Los Marinos) which I believe opens some nights for dinner too, but we weren't told about that by the staff, but by another couple staying there. The food here was absolutely fine. Plenty of fresh fruit and salad, breads, hot food (but not always hot!). The hot breakfasts weren't great. Lunch was ok. Pasta, rice, fish, meat.
Los Caribes was our favourite for dinner. They had a theme night every night- Italian, Cuban, Romantico, Chefs Night etc. The only thing was that you had a choice of a fish dish or a meat dish and that was it. I don't eat much fish, so I was really limited. But you have to bear in mind that this place is probably only catering for 200ish people at a time. You can't have the choice they would have at the larger neighbouring Melia hotels. The other one, Los Navegantes, was not for me. That had the same menu every night which was fish, fish, fish, rabbit and steak. Ordered the steak and they didn't have the cut stated, just this horrible fatty thing (to be fair, the waiter tried to put us off it, but I didn't like anything else on the menu). Probably not the place for vegetarians!
You can visit the other Melias for dinner which we did a couple of times. More choice, but the food is still pretty poor, and they still ran out of a lot of dishes. Also, the service wasn't that great at those compared to Buenavista. They're good to visit though if you fancy a livelier evening just for a change.

Service- The service is what makes this place what it is. Absolutely incredible! As I said before, Aylin and Belkis were very approachable and smiley, and would do anything for you (we didn't make many requests but they were so helpful if we ever did). The bar staff, both in the piano bar and by the pool were ace. My personal favourite though was Seydel, in Los Caribes. She was so funny, always remembered what drinks you liked, and looked like she really enjoyed her job. A huge credit to the hotel.

You will not regret staying here, if you want peace, tranquility, great service and amazing scenery.
Highly recommend!

Wow...I am almost hesitant and reluctant to share this post with the outside world! In planning our travel, 99% of the time we pro-actively avoid all-inclusive resorts. However, our experience at the Melia Buenavista unquestionably shattered all of our preconceived notions & phobias. Kudos 1st to the incredibly attentive staff personnel, and their unrelenting quest to accommodate your every request, need, or mission. Especially noteworthy was the helpful assistance coordinated by Yaniny Perez Rodriguez and Miakel during our late evening check-out departure. Alien, Kit and numerous other staff members made out stay and visit on Cayo Santa Maria 5 stars plus. We will look forward to planning another get-away escape to the idyllic, enchanting and magical Melia Buenavista - Cayo Santa Maria.

This was our 3rd time coming to this resort and again hats off to the staff and management. We stayed from March 15th to the 22nd and it was awsome. This resort has improved again in our eyes from our amazing butlers Joel and Lucus(Good combo by the way) to the grounds keepers who keep improving the grounds continually. Since last year they have made a walkway out to a small hut on sunset beach where we saw a couple getting a massage, also they have added some palpas on the snorkeling beach and more chairs everywhere, you never have to worry about getting out and reserving as there is always one available. We find that ALL employees are very friendly and willing to help, in our case Air Canada lost our luggage and for 3 days until we got it the employees were offering there own stuff from home, which we were very impressed with. It is always sad to read reveiws from others about the quality of food or service, you must remember that they do not have access to food like we do so they have to make do with what they have access to.
We will definitely be back next year and look forward to this quiet piece of paradise where you can relax and actually rest.

Room Tip: Rooms on sunset beach are absolutely amazing.

My husband and I booked 2 weeks here and just got home on March 20th. I wished people had written the truth about the food, we would have NEVER booked here. This was our 15th trip to Cuba for one week or greater. I cannot eat gluten or Red Meat due to Ulcers. I usually find the reviews bang on...this is the exception. Breakfast at the Buffet or Room Service. That is your choice. You wait a long time to get the room service..2 out of 3 times it was cold. My husband ordered Crepes, he got no Syrup. He got Pancakes. The 2nd time we ordered 2 eggs each with fresh fruit, again one set of silverware did not arrive. Who wants to eat first..because you know you are not going to wait for silverware, that will be another 40 or so minutes. The lunch/breakfast buffet is terrible....that is all I will say. We would try and eat at the Pool BBQ most days....Options were extremely limited. Some days they would BBQ the chicken and sometimes I waited 3 days for lunch...because thats how many days it took to get chicken again. Pork, Beef or sausages were the norm. I had fish twice, it was just ok. We went to Melia Santa Maria to have a lunch and breakfast buffet twice while there. The selection was FAR better. DINNER...how is it that they DON'T have veggies? Really? We met another couple who went into town and bought onions so we could give them to the cook for some of our meals. Carrots (frozen) and green beans 4 nights in a row with a piece of fish. No ONE seemed to understand I don't eat bread and kept offering pasta. The Caribe Restaurant is the WORST-Menu was one choice for Appetizer (Beef Carpaccio) Soup -One choice (Beef Soup) and dinner 2 choices. Both with same veggies. I have had no problem...ever staying for 2 or 3 weeks at 4-5 stars in Cuba. There was always Veggies? What Gives Here? I spoke with the manager in regards to this and he says they are working hard to give more selection. I would give this Resort a 5 for Beaches and Pool, A 4 for Service (Receptionists are quite rude to a lot of clients) I witnessed this myself and stepped in on one occasion when she was outright lying to a repeat customer. Their are STANDOUT employees for sure...ALL the Bartenders and WAITRESS's work extremely hard and are always happy to look after you. We enjoyed are stay but could not do more than 3 days here because of limited food choices. Would not go back until they changed this up. We ate at all the Melia's and this resort LAGS far behind and costs the most-By FAR. The manager is doing a great job, but this should be an easier FIX considering it's only.....what even the 3 stars are doing a Better Job at.

Dear Mrs. Puuruta from Toronto:
We heartily thank this sincere review where you describe your perception of the services received while under our care. We understand we still have some work to do in order to achieve our guests’ satisfaction in terms of food quality and variety. In any case, we suggest those customers who have some specific food requirement to arrange, through their butler, some personalized menus which may better suit their needs and also, to enjoy the unique possibility of using facilities in our neighboring resorts where, unlike us, they do have some buffet restaurants. We very much appreciate your praising those features you did enjoy from our resort in spite of the fact that your experience was not exactly perfect.
We hope you give us another opportunity to serve you in the near future and provide you a more pleasant vacation.
