My husband and I enjoyed a one week stay at this beautiful resort. It was the smallest resort we have been to and the first adults only. We enjoyed the personal service provided by everyone working at the resort, they knew you by name your very first day there! We enjoyed the short walk to - well everything. We love to snorkel and really enjoyed being able to walk out and snorkel right off the beach. There was no need to reserve chairs, reservations for dinner were simple, food was very good and the servers really were outstanding. We did a couple of excursions - unrelated to the hotel and enjoyed them thoroughly, a catamaran, snorkel tour - it was great, wild dolphins followed us and some of the other guest were fortunate enough to get photos of the dolphins, they were very curious about his camera - we also did a private tour into town with two very lovely local gentleman (son and father) the dad drove us in a 1950's car and the son spoke very very good engligh and seemed to know everyone and gave us the grand tour - AWESOME day. The butlers made every effort to meet our every needs, personal notes with little gifts, bubble baths and champagne, very romantic. Speaking of romantic - the sax player at sunset is very cool to see - we enjoyed this much more than we thought we would - loved it! The night time entertainment at the lobby was great as well, more intimate and we got to know some wonderful people at the resort from all over - what a great group of people. The pools were both great, as are the day beds, beaches were amazing, soft sand and cold drinks - it was quiet which we loved hearing the water vs music all the time. We did venture to a sister resort and after spending a few days at Melia Buenavista, we realized how accustomed to the peace and serenity and found the music, the lines and the sheer amount of people everywhere was a little overwhelming. Still a great resort - but we preferred to be back at Melia - it was as if it was our own private beach - I felt pampered and well rested after this vacation.

Room Tip: Upgrading to an ocean view is definitely worth the extra money.

This was our fourth time to Cuba and it was out favorite resort by far. They call it the 'old folks home' but we absolutely loved the peace and quiet. When we booked the resort we somehow missed the fact that there was no dinner buffet so that took us by surprise. There are 2 a la carte restaurants here or you have full access to the buffets and a la carte restaurants at the 2 other Melia resorts and there is free shuttle transportation to those resorts. The Mexican and Japanese restaurants were our favorites.

The hour and a half bus ride from the airport concerned me but quite honestly I slept most of the way so it really wasn't that bad.

You did not have to get up at 7 am to reserve a spot by the pool or beach, there was always a spot - sun or shade - available. The sunset beach was our favorite beach. There was no drink service at that beach but it was so beautiful and peaceful and close to our room that we didn't mind. The water there is nice and calm and shallow and once the tide goes out you can walk a long ways around the one side of the beach previously under water. The other 2 beaches are deeper and have more waves if scuba diving and wave jumping is your thing.

Our room was cleaned morning and night. We don't tend to be out late so a couple times the night maid hadn't been to our room yet, not a big deal so we just put up the do not disturb sign.

We had 2 butlers - Javier and Lucas - they work 16 hour days ever other day after and have a 2 hour bus ride each way to get to work - and they were always extremely helpful. About halfway though the week they left us a plate of fruit in our room to enjoy mid-afternoon. The next day after our massages they left another plate of fruit and drew us a bath in the Jacuzzi tub and our last night they left us a bottle of wine. They really know how to make you feel pampered.

Our pick up time for the return trip was 5:30pm so we weren't able to have supper that night. We were able to arrange - through our butler - a packed lunch which included hot ham and cheese sandwiches, pastries (so yummy) and water and juice. Such a nice touch!!!

This resort was the cleanest resort we have ever stayed at. One day a lizard did sneak into our room when we opened the door but there really isn't anything anyone can do about that:)

The only issue we had was that when we booked our vacation our package showed that it guaranteed free late checkout until 4pm. That was not honored so we had to pay 8cuc per hour for a late checkout. I just suggest double checking your included amenities with your travel agent before you leave.

We did not go on any excursions as we were there to do nothing but relax. We did go to the market just down the road via the free shuttle bus and were able to pick up a few small souvenirs. We were only gone for a couple of hours and it was a nice little market.

We would go back tomorrow if we could!!

Room Tip: The outdoor showers were amazing but I'd suggest a first floor room. You could see through the...

This hotel was absolutely amazing from start to finish. We arrived around 11am after a flight from Havana to the local airport Las Brujas. Upon arrival, you walk into a nice, modern lobby with a smell of incense (if I could have taken that home, I would have). You sit down and check in whilst a welcome cocktail is handed to you. Perfect! You are then introduced to your Butler. You have two butlers during your stay who work alternate days, so you only really need to know two faces. Ours were Aylin and Belkis, who were both friendly, wonderful women who always greeted us with a smile :)

Butler Service- Don't be put off by the term butler service. They do not follow you around with a parasol. They are a point of contact. You have to book your evening meal with them every day before noon, which I thought would involve running around looking for them, but Aylin and Belkis were always outside the breakfast restaurant every morning. They will also arrange for your minibar to be restocked.

Rooms- The rooms are outstanding! There are only 105 rooms but whilst you're there, it feels like there are only about 30! Very spacious and clean. Huge beds and a pillow menu so you get what is right for you. The jacuzzi bath is vast, and you can pay 10CUCs for an in spa bath experience which your butler will run for you. My highlight was the outdoor shower. Great water pressure, and always the right weather for it! Walk in wardrobe, lots of toiletries, beach bag and towels, robes, slippers. Everything you could need. Our balcony looked over the quiet pool, and because of well placed palm trees, it felt private still. From looking at the rooms, the ones overlooking sunset beach would be amazing, but I really don't think any of them have a bad location. You can tell it is very well thought out.

Pools/Beach- What can I say, these are what we all came for! Because there are only 105 rooms, you're never without a sunbed either by the two pools or the three beaches. There is also plenty of shade if the heat gets too much in the afternoon. The beaches are stunning. The main beach has a bar, and even that is really quiet. Lovely places for snorkelling. There are two pools- the main pool and the quiet pool. The main pool plays a bit of chill out music, and does some water activities like volleyball and aqua aerobics. But most of the time it is quiet. It has a great pool bar and BBQ. We tended to be around the quiet pool as it was near our room, and we had it to ourselves most of the day!

Restaurants- The food is the only thing that lets itself down here, but it is not enough for me to downgrade the place a star, and this is because the food in Cuba overall isn't amazing. They run out of things in Cuba sometimes, so we approached with an open mind. There are three restaurants. There is the breakfast and lunch buffet one (Los Marinos) which I believe opens some nights for dinner too, but we weren't told about that by the staff, but by another couple staying there. The food here was absolutely fine. Plenty of fresh fruit and salad, breads, hot food (but not always hot!). The hot breakfasts weren't great. Lunch was ok. Pasta, rice, fish, meat.
Los Caribes was our favourite for dinner. They had a theme night every night- Italian, Cuban, Romantico, Chefs Night etc. The only thing was that you had a choice of a fish dish or a meat dish and that was it. I don't eat much fish, so I was really limited. But you have to bear in mind that this place is probably only catering for 200ish people at a time. You can't have the choice they would have at the larger neighbouring Melia hotels. The other one, Los Navegantes, was not for me. That had the same menu every night which was fish, fish, fish, rabbit and steak. Ordered the steak and they didn't have the cut stated, just this horrible fatty thing (to be fair, the waiter tried to put us off it, but I didn't like anything else on the menu). Probably not the place for vegetarians!
You can visit the other Melias for dinner which we did a couple of times. More choice, but the food is still pretty poor, and they still ran out of a lot of dishes. Also, the service wasn't that great at those compared to Buenavista. They're good to visit though if you fancy a livelier evening just for a change.

Service- The service is what makes this place what it is. Absolutely incredible! As I said before, Aylin and Belkis were very approachable and smiley, and would do anything for you (we didn't make many requests but they were so helpful if we ever did). The bar staff, both in the piano bar and by the pool were ace. My personal favourite though was Seydel, in Los Caribes. She was so funny, always remembered what drinks you liked, and looked like she really enjoyed her job. A huge credit to the hotel.

You will not regret staying here, if you want peace, tranquility, great service and amazing scenery.
Highly recommend!

Wow...I am almost hesitant and reluctant to share this post with the outside world! In planning our travel, 99% of the time we pro-actively avoid all-inclusive resorts. However, our experience at the Melia Buenavista unquestionably shattered all of our preconceived notions & phobias. Kudos 1st to the incredibly attentive staff personnel, and their unrelenting quest to accommodate your every request, need, or mission. Especially noteworthy was the helpful assistance coordinated by Yaniny Perez Rodriguez and Miakel during our late evening check-out departure. Alien, Kit and numerous other staff members made out stay and visit on Cayo Santa Maria 5 stars plus. We will look forward to planning another get-away escape to the idyllic, enchanting and magical Melia Buenavista - Cayo Santa Maria.

This was our 3rd time coming to this resort and again hats off to the staff and management. We stayed from March 15th to the 22nd and it was awsome. This resort has improved again in our eyes from our amazing butlers Joel and Lucus(Good combo by the way) to the grounds keepers who keep improving the grounds continually. Since last year they have made a walkway out to a small hut on sunset beach where we saw a couple getting a massage, also they have added some palpas on the snorkeling beach and more chairs everywhere, you never have to worry about getting out and reserving as there is always one available. We find that ALL employees are very friendly and willing to help, in our case Air Canada lost our luggage and for 3 days until we got it the employees were offering there own stuff from home, which we were very impressed with. It is always sad to read reveiws from others about the quality of food or service, you must remember that they do not have access to food like we do so they have to make do with what they have access to.
We will definitely be back next year and look forward to this quiet piece of paradise where you can relax and actually rest.

Room Tip: Rooms on sunset beach are absolutely amazing.

My husband and I booked 2 weeks here and just got home on March 20th. I wished people had written the truth about the food, we would have NEVER booked here. This was our 15th trip to Cuba for one week or greater. I cannot eat gluten or Red Meat due to Ulcers. I usually find the reviews bang on...this is the exception. Breakfast at the Buffet or Room Service. That is your choice. You wait a long time to get the room service..2 out of 3 times it was cold. My husband ordered Crepes, he got no Syrup. He got Pancakes. The 2nd time we ordered 2 eggs each with fresh fruit, again one set of silverware did not arrive. Who wants to eat first..because you know you are not going to wait for silverware, that will be another 40 or so minutes. The lunch/breakfast buffet is terrible....that is all I will say. We would try and eat at the Pool BBQ most days....Options were extremely limited. Some days they would BBQ the chicken and sometimes I waited 3 days for lunch...because thats how many days it took to get chicken again. Pork, Beef or sausages were the norm. I had fish twice, it was just ok. We went to Melia Santa Maria to have a lunch and breakfast buffet twice while there. The selection was FAR better. DINNER...how is it that they DON'T have veggies? Really? We met another couple who went into town and bought onions so we could give them to the cook for some of our meals. Carrots (frozen) and green beans 4 nights in a row with a piece of fish. No ONE seemed to understand I don't eat bread and kept offering pasta. The Caribe Restaurant is the WORST-Menu was one choice for Appetizer (Beef Carpaccio) Soup -One choice (Beef Soup) and dinner 2 choices. Both with same veggies. I have had no problem...ever staying for 2 or 3 weeks at 4-5 stars in Cuba. There was always Veggies? What Gives Here? I spoke with the manager in regards to this and he says they are working hard to give more selection. I would give this Resort a 5 for Beaches and Pool, A 4 for Service (Receptionists are quite rude to a lot of clients) I witnessed this myself and stepped in on one occasion when she was outright lying to a repeat customer. Their are STANDOUT employees for sure...ALL the Bartenders and WAITRESS's work extremely hard and are always happy to look after you. We enjoyed are stay but could not do more than 3 days here because of limited food choices. Would not go back until they changed this up. We ate at all the Melia's and this resort LAGS far behind and costs the most-By FAR. The manager is doing a great job, but this should be an easier FIX considering it's only.....what even the 3 stars are doing a Better Job at.

Dear Mrs. Puuruta from Toronto:
We heartily thank this sincere review where you describe your perception of the services received while under our care. We understand we still have some work to do in order to achieve our guests’ satisfaction in terms of food quality and variety. In any case, we suggest those customers who have some specific food requirement to arrange, through their butler, some personalized menus which may better suit their needs and also, to enjoy the unique possibility of using facilities in our neighboring resorts where, unlike us, they do have some buffet restaurants. We very much appreciate your praising those features you did enjoy from our resort in spite of the fact that your experience was not exactly perfect.
We hope you give us another opportunity to serve you in the near future and provide you a more pleasant vacation.

Reviewed April 5, 2014

Prior to sharing our perception of the this resort, I'd like to qualify my commentary by noting that we have, over the past 18 years, traveled to Cuba 3- 6 times a year. In recent years, we have tended to stay on the resort we visit, rather than partake of excursions, or visit the "real" Cuba on our own.

When visiting a resort in Cuba, we prefer adult only resorts which, hopefully, are small, quiet, offer an excellent beach for extensive walking, a decently equipped gym, quality service and primarily a la carte dining.

We also subscribe to the belief that when visiting a different country/culture, that we attempt to understand that country/culture and its people. Treat people with respect and you will get the same in return.

Context given: now the review.

The Melia Buenavista is a four year old resort which is located off the north coast of Cuba on Cayo Santa Maria. (part of the Jardines del Rey archipelago) Access to the key involves, with rare exception, a flight to Santa Clara on the Cuban mainland and then a 1.5 - 2 hour trip by bus or taxi to the various hotels located on the Cayo.

The MBV is a 105 room, adults only, 5* property (by Cuban standards) offering "Royal Service," three a la carte dining rooms (in season), 24 hr. room service, all jr. suite rooms, two pools, access to three beaches, buffet or a la carte breakfast, Spa service and complimentary access to the neighbouring Melia Cayo Santa Maria and Melia Las Dunas. All rooms are located in two story buildings.

Arriving at the MBV, one enters the resort through the main lobby. Check in is efficient and staff welcoming. During check in, your "butler" will be introduced to you. Upon completing the check in process, your butler will give you a tour of the resort and escort you to your room. Your luggage will likely be in your suite by the time this tour is completed. (Note: access to your room is obviously dependent upon time of arrival/availability.)

While there are various categories of rooms at the MBV ... Villa, honeymoon (Romantic), prime oceanview, oceanview, standard ... essentially all rooms with the exception of the top two categories are similar. Spacious, well designed, and comfortable, each comes with a full bath and shower, an al fresco shower, mini bar, coffee maker, flat screen tv, ironing board and dry iron, safe, umbrellas, waffle spa robes, slippers, amenities, beach towels and a beach bag.

Whether visitors prefer lounging about a pool, or lying on a beach, the MBV can meet your needs. Two beautiful pools and three beaches with plentiful loungers and shade mean there is no need to rise early and save a place in your desired location as at many resorts.

Recently, the MBV has built new palapas on their snorkeling beach. Previous posts have noted the poor condition most of the umbrellas which were originally on this beach: the new palapas, built while we were there, have eliminated this concern.

The main beach of the MBV offers beach walkers unlimited opportunities for exercise. One can walk for up to 7 km + (one way) if you choose. Walking this beach, btw, allows MBV guests to access the Melia Cayo Santa Maria and the Melia Las Dunas from their respective beach fronts.

Speaking of exercise, the Buenavista has a fairly well equipped gym which opens at 7 a.m. daily. One exercise bike, two treadmills, two elliptical trainers, a weight machine and free weights (dumbells, bars and plates) are all available. All the equipment is in working order and of good quality.

Dining at the MBV, is very good. As guests, one has access to 24 hr. room service. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all available through the latter. However, the Buenavista has three (in season) a la carte dining rooms open for dinner and a buffet/a la carte restaurant (Los Marinos) serving breakfast and lunch.

We noted that since our last trip to the MBV this past September, service in Los Marinos has improved significantly. Additionally, the buffet food offerings were more varied and plentiful. Fresh fruit and vegetables were in abundance. This improvement, in such a short period of time, is a credit to both management and staff.

Lunch at the MBV can be had at the afore mentioned Los Marinos buffet/a la carte restaurant or at the grill near the "main" pool which is located just outside the lobby.( If occupancy warrants such, the a la carte restaurant Los Caribes may also be open .)

This grill typically offers, from 1 - 4 p.m., chicken, fish, pork and sausage in some combination. The meat is complemented with fresh tomatoes, lettuce and cucumbers. Fresh bread/buns are also available. Want a pizza, french fries, hamburger etc.? The adjacent pool bar staffers will order such from the main kitchen and bring it to you when ready.

Dinner at the MBV can be enjoyed at any one of three a la carte restaurants: Los Marinos, Los Caribes, and Los Navigantes. (note that Los Marinos may not be open in the evening: dependent upon occupancy.) Our experience has been that all three are very, very good. Should you find yourself wanting something, simply ask your server: we have found that the wait staff is always accommodating and wants to ensure that your dining experience is a pleasant one. If one has a preference for all buffet dining, the MBV may not meet your expectations: however, there is an answer to that concern.

Staying at the MBV, gives one access to all the facilities and dining of the Melia Cayo Santa Maria and the Melia Las Dunas. Both are larger properties catering to families. Both have proportionately larger buffets and a la carte dining rooms. Access to these resorts is via free shuttle transportation from the front lobby. Reservations for the a la carte restaurants at these properties must be made through one's butler. No reservation is required for their buffets.

While we have visited both of the latter Melias, we found no need to dine at either. Still, they are worth a visit if for nothing else than to simply experience a different environment.

I would be remiss if I did not mention the lobby bar (24 hrs.) and the pool bar. (10 a.m. - 5 p.m.) Both are staffed by excellent "cantineros" and offer a broad range of drinks and brands. The lobby bars cappuccino's are very nice indeed.

Evening entertainment at the MBV changes nightly. The lobby bar and it's outside terrazzo, typically have singers or a musical group entertaining clients in the early evening. The main show is held outside the lobby bar and ranges from Cuban bands, to Cuban tenors, to Michael Jackson imitators to a water show in the adjacent pool. All are very good.

To this point, I have attempted to describe the various features of the MBV: I must now turn to what we think is the two most attractive elements of the Buenavista ... its tranquility and its employees.

Tranquility: The MBV epitomizes this word. From its Spa packages to its architecture, to its level of service, this a place where one goes to truly relax. There is no "animacion" staff calling one and all to on going activities, (there are daily activities ... volleyball in the pool, yoga, pool aerobics, etc.) no blaring thump, thump of a circular, dated musical mp 3 player, no "disco" keeping one awake until all hours of the morning. There is simply serenity ... an escape from the hustle and bustle of one's daily life and stresses. In our two stays at the Buenavista, it is clear that such appeals to people of a wide age range and a multitude of nationalities ... another strength of this resort.

Ultimately however, none of this would be possible without the employees of the MBV. There is no point in attempting to identify a few "special" staff ... for all we have encountered have done nothing but their best to meet our needs. Clearly, management has created a team here which is focused on customer service. Most importantly, that team has recognized that imperative and put it into action.

Is the MBV the "perfect" place for every traveller. Of course not: perfection does not exist. That being said, we have noticed that improvements are on-going at the MBV. It is, in relative terms, a newcomer to the Cayo Santa Maria area. Building a team committed to service takes time and effort. Building an identity for itself also takes time. The Melia Buenavista, imho, is well on its way towards achieving its goals. It is already an excellent resort: in time, it has the potential to be superb!

My ultimate compliment: we are already looking forward to our next stays at the MBV in May and July!

Room Tip: Frankly, I don't think there's a bad room in the resort. If your preference is pool over be...
