Again my stay at the Buenavista was an extremely delightful experience. The gardens are wonderfully kept, my room was perfectly clean and well maintained (this can not be taken for granted in Cuba), the beaches very nice. But what makes this hotel so special are the people: friendly, courteous, smiling - everyone from gardener to the excellent manager Ernesto! As I wrote in an earlier review of the Buenavista: this is the only true five star hotel in Cuba! Felicitationes Ernesto

Found a last minute deal and booked this hotel. 90 minutes from the airport and you arrive at a "boutique" style hotel with only 100 or so rooms. Very efficient check-in and an excellent butler (Janvier) service during our stay.
Pros: Room was perfect, now I want an outdoor shower.
Helpful and super friendly staff our butler Janvier was a jewel
Quiet, zen and clean, 3 great beaches to chose from.
You can go and eat and drink at the Las Dunas if you are bored.
Great snorkeling and clear warm water
Food was pretty darn good
Didn't see or hear a single Tabarnacos
Cons: Cocktails were so-so, wish they served the same red wine as the Las Dunas
Thats it....

We opted for a taxi/tour ride back to the airport, alot more fun, and you can arrive about an hour and a half before your flight. Visited Remedios and Santa Clara, saw the Che Guevara memorial and museum plus alot more. Ask Janvier.....

We really would have stayed another week!

Room Tip: We had 2611, ground level and giving onto the "quiet" pool. Great room!

We visited Melia Buenavista April 12-19, and stayed in room 1822 which had a beautiful view of the ocean. Everything about this resort was amazing. The food was wonderful, the staff was awesome. The bartenders Liorvis, Orestes, and Osmany treated us like long time friends, making us laugh at every encounter, and ensuring we never went thirsty. Our butler Mary was very friendly and took care of our every need. We had great lunches at the pool side "charcoal" grill, as well as delicious pizzas and calzones from Los Caribes. We enjoyed the dinners at all three restaurants. The grilled lobster at Los Navegantes was one of our favorites. The Mexican and Cuban nights at Los Caribes were fantastic, we loved the live music while we ate. The beaches had great snorkeling, and white sand for miles in either direction. The pools were very relaxing and we could always find a spot to lounge. Everyone at this resort went out of their way to make sure we were enjoying our vacation. If you're looking for a relaxing, peaceful vacation then this is the place for you. Our single disappointment was that we only had a week! Thanks again to all the staff at MBV and we can't wait to see you all again.

Just returned from our vacation at melia buenevista. It was fantastic. Our room 2422 was perfect and located minutes from the beach. The service from our butlers Adel and Geralda was top notch. They took care of everything for us and we so appreciated it. They surprised us with beautiful roses in the room and bubble bath in our jacuzzi. We met some great friends...Micheal, Renaldo, Daigle and Pedro. Will remember your warmth forever and friendliness forever. Highly recommend this resort!

March 28 to April 4th - The airport in Santa Clara was very good, both the arrival and departure areas. Good clean washrooms, no problems coming and going through customs and pretty good prices at the duty free. The bus ride is long (approx 90 min depending on the resort location) but you do get a glimpse of life in Cuba during the slow drive through the few towns along the way.

The resort - suites are huge, modern and there is a lot of space to store your stuff, a great sitting area and balcony. The safe works well and is large. The washroom area and outside shower all great. The maid service was very good, timely and our room always cleaned to our expectations. The bar fridge was always refilled to whatever we wanted, asking for extra beer, pop or water was not an issue. Leave a CUC or 2 daily for the maid and a CUC in the fridge for the refill guy keeps the room in tip-top shape.
Most of the staff can speak English and they are more than willing to converse with you. We had two wonderful butlers during our stay, Aylin and Belkis, who booked our evening meals and took care of all other requests during our stay.

The food was very good, choices were limited as there are only 3 main places to eat and with a couple hundred guests they cannot be expected to offer full range menus at each place. You can request them to modify the way your meal is prepared and they are more than open to doing so if it is possible by the chef. Breakfast was fine, lots of options. We ate most lunches down by the pool with the new bbq hut they have just finished. Drinks were good, wine acceptable, beer great and they make a mean Cuban Special at the pool bar, ask Osmany and Orestes, they will make sure it is perfect for you. Be careful, it can creep up on you in the hot sun.

We did visit the Melia Cayo Santa Maria resort for a lunch and supper and it was very good to see another resort to compare to this place. The buffet lunch was good there and the Japanese supper was OK. Taking a visit to the other bigger more crowded resorts will make you appreciate why you made the choice for the smaller resort.

The sun, beach, water and snorkeling, all great! It was sunny and windy for several days during our stay so that eliminated the east side beach and bar for doing anything so we mostly hung around the snorkeling centre beach and the calmer west beach. The centre snorkeling beach has two pools, the bigger right (facing ocean) has lots of fish and is best during high tide as you can scrape your arms and legs on the coral during the low tides. The water is exceptionally clear for snorkeling and taking underwater photos. I did see small schools of young barracuda during the high tide as well as other bigger fish than at low tide.

I think most of the memories from our trip will be from the fun we had interacting with the staff when we walked around, meal times and at the bar later in the evening. Osmany and Orestes deservedly get a lot of good internet comments but we would also like to acknowledge several other staff who took the time to stop and chat and request if we needed anything to make our stay more pleasant. The gardening guys Armando and Ivan, always a wave and a conversation if we crossed paths, which was just about every day. Lazaro always gave a wave and hello while he drove around in his van delivering supplies. Isobani, the poolside chef, cooked up a mean bbq and was there to serve you great food.

The restaurant staff, all great, everyone making sure your meal was the best it could be. Felix, Yaikel and Yosviel each served us a couple a nights and these guys were exceptional for service and laughs. Nadiuska at the breakfast location, really good to talk with and so funny.

At the lobby bar, one of our favorite servers was a young lady named Yamisela, great sense of humor, infectious smile and laugh and always there before your glass was empty to see if you need another. Her working partners on several occasions were Delvis and Darisbey (also did the sunset sax player ceremony).
There was also good entertainment at breakfast and dinners that featured touring Cuban musicians and they were all excellent. Tipping them or buying their home made cd is a good idea as they are travelling long distances to work all the resorts and you know it’s a tough life moving equipment around with little transportation available to get out across the causeway to the resort.

And last but not least, the front desk and management for this resort run a good ship and I think it is reflected in the attitude of the staff. The Hotel Manager and Director, Ernesto Osuna is always out and about the resort making sure things are running smoothly and working to make your vacation memorable. Make sure to say hello to Ernesto, his time is limited as he is heading back to Spain mid May. Hopefully Melia Hotels and Ernesto will find an equally competent and professional manager to run this resort following his departure. Many people in earlier reviews have commented on the excellence of the management for Melia Buenavista.

OK, excellent holiday had by all, we highly recommend this resort for a totally relaxing adult only vacation resort with excellent safe snorkeling and great accommodations. Hasta Luego Cayo Santa Maria and Melia Buenavista

My husband and I spent a week at this resort the end of March. It was our first time at a boutiques style resort, and we quite enjoyed the peace and quiet, and the personalized attention you get at such a place. It's definitely not a place to go for discos and motorized water sports, if that's what you usually look for, but the activities staff, led by Navy and Yaiset, had plenty of other things to do if you chose (but didn't push you if you didn't want to). The dance lessons were lots of fun with Yaiset, and we went on the ecological walk with Navy and learned a lot. The service at the pool, with Orestes and Osmany, was superb; they quickly learned your favourite drinks and it always seemed that as soon as your glass was empty another one would magicially appear. Their personality and humour also made the poolside area even more enjoyable. We thought the food was very good at all restaurants; we thought the selection and quality at Los Navigantes was fantastic (especially the ceviche), but also loved Los Caribes for the live music. The beaches were superb; we loved the way there were so many little areas amongst the limestone to explore, and feed the fish. Javier and Lucas, our concierges, would make sure to fulfill any requests we had, and were very helpful. Also helpful was the 24 hour room service, as we had to leave the hotel for the airport at 6 AM, so were still able to get a small breakfast delivered to our room. We had a wonderful time and would definitely go back again.

Room Tip: All rooms were overlooking the beach or one of the pools, so really all locations were good; no matt...

We were originally booked into the Melia Cayo Santa Maria, but after arriving and staying a few nights we requested a transfer to another hotel. We ended up at the Melia Buenavista Cayo Santa Maria and what a difference when we walked in, professional, clean, helpful, everything the previous hotel had not been. Staff most helpful and our butler Lucas was wonderful, even drawing a bubble bath with rose petals scattered around, flowers and a bottle of bubbly on ice! on the evening of my birthday which was very much appreciated. The beach was fantastic and peaceful, power white sand and clear blue waters with pretty colourful fish swimming around. The pool bar service was excellent and very attentive, but the pool towels were a let down, running out of dry towels for long periods of time. Food very good the only let down was the beach restuarant (self service) wasn't open in the evening, if that had of been the case then it would of been much better for us. Overall we had a great time at this hotel, thank you.
