“Fantastic summer vacation”
Reviewed January 7, 2014

We stayed four days during July 2013. We had a prepaid deal with breakfast and dinner and we were overwhelmed at the quality of the food (especially the dinner). Rooms are small and old-fashioned, but as the restaurant is so good, the bar with live-music so much fun and the hotel is set right next to the harbour and beach and waling distance to the Samsoe festival, it's just great. Definately worth a visit.

We had dinner at Ballen restaurant and really enjoyed the setting, the atmosphere and attentif service and humour of the owner of the place, definitly a humorus character. We had fresh fish prepared in a very tasty manner; and although very pricey we highly recommend this special restaurant.

To be honest we were very disappointed and would have left had we not already pre-paid for the room. Many things to criticize - rooms was lousy as was the breakfast and such a shame they cannot be bothered to serve breakfast outdoor on the terrace - even during a spell of "tropical" weather. Also cleaning of rooms was rare and pretty basic. It definitely felt like the focus of attention was not on the wishes of the guests... In fact it felt like they do not care forntheirnguests. we had dinner once and itnwasbvery good but the Service without any charm. Find another place at Samsø which is a beautiful island with lovely people - just not at Ballen Badehotel!

Room Tip: Rooms in the Annex are apparently bigger but without any charm at all and really cheap furniture.

I spent 3 days in August in this hotel with my husband and must say that I was deeply disappointed - the worst hotel ever!
We payed an over price for a very very small room under the Roof, we banged the head against the wall each time we wanted to sit up or get out of our beds, the bath room was a toilet/shower not very clean and the view over the supermarket!
As I complained next day, the manager of the hotel, Pia, told me that this was one of their better rooms! She was taking the p...out of us !
On top of this, the hotel is very old fashion and a smell of food when you enter the hotel! The breakfast very poor :no homemade bread, one kind of cheese, scrabble eggs cold and overcooked as well as the bacon and to help you swallow, some awful coffee!
The service is a foreign language for this hotel: on time I asked if she would kindly call a taxi for us to which she answered that she did not have time for this in a very rude way...
In one word : Avoide - unless you want to waste your money and holiday.

In 1991 I was at Ballen Badehotel for a lovely wedding. The food and the service was excellent and I recalled the ocean view from the dining room. When looking for a hotel on Samsø this summer, where I could stay with my family I decided to come back to Ballen Badehotel. Paying $200 (1600 DKK) per night, I expected a decent hotel room.

The room was not at the hotel, but across the road in an old apartment building. The room was not appealing at all with cheap IKEA lamps and an awful view to a roof. The bathroom was dated, probably from the 1980s, with brown tiles and a green bathtub.

There was no room service or mini bar, not even a small fridge to cool drinks. There were no glasses, no coffee maker or water boiler. There were four plastic cups in the bathroom, but two of them were cracked and not usable.

During the warm summer night the small room sleeping two adults and two children got really hot, but to my dismay I found the window was defect and could not be opened. Given no a/c or other ventilation options, we had to sleep with the door open. When I called the reception the next day, hoping they would send someone to fix the window, the receptionist did nothing but confirming that she was aware that the window could not be opened, and that we would have to keep the door open for ventilation. When I expressed concern about sleeping with the door opened, she simply responded "don't worry, nothing happens on Samsø".

The breakfast, served from 8 am to 10 am, was a really lousy and very limited buffet with two types of bread (clearly not homemade), scrambled eggs (cold), one kind of cheese, two kinds of marmelade (abricot and black currant), two types of yoghurt (plain and strawberry served in the carton that you buy at the grocery store) and raw oats. The coffee tasted like instant coffee and the hot chocolate that my kids requested was the cheap kind (not made with milk).

The only positive note about this stay was the dinner we had the first night. It was tasty dish with fish and white aspargus well worth the money. The waiter was kind, although not very attentive.

In conclusion: I recommend you to stay away from Ballen "Snyde" hotel. Take a look at the nearby Strandlyst instead. That's where I will stay next time. The location, the service and the food here is extraordinary and the price is about the same.

Room Tip: Be sure not to book a room in the annex.

We came after dinner so we only orderd a nice rose wine and a lovely dessert. We tok the rest of the wine with us to the hotel lounge bar Emil B. There we enjoyed a fine concert with a duo playing easy listening pop music.
