“Relaxed, colorful, nice staff.”
Reviewed March 15, 2013

We went on a 3 day stay at this hotel, the staff is really nice and they are always available. Our arrival was on Friday and they inmmediately lead us to our room. The hotel is really nice, warm, it has a lot of ornaments and figurines along the way, it has an inner patio which is also really beautiful. The room in which we stayed was a king size bed (/comfy enough), a fireplace a window to the inner patio and the bathroom. There's no TV in the room, so if you're looking to stay there, rest and watch tv, better bring your own laptop and some movies along, there´s also no minifridge. It gets colder in the night, but if you ask for more blankets or fireup the fireplace there's nothing to worry about. In the morning, the breakfast is included, it is delicious, typical mexican food (tamales, chilaquiles, gorditas, quesadillas, fruit, carrot cake). It is actually a really nice place to stay, although, it's not that near from the center of Tapalpa, neither so far.

Tapalpa is a little town, there's not much to do, we went to the center of Tapalpa, to its restaurants, to the church and walked around. I know there are places to go and do outdoor activities, like the one of the Aquetzalli canyon that we took. I really liked it, it was fun, but the water was really cold (so if you're planning on going to this trip, you might want to have no cotton clothes or some other neoprene clothing) There´s also a visit to some giant rocks and there's places where you can go and buy tickets to activities, I went with Bosque la Mexicana tours, really nice guys, excellent service.

If you're planning on a little escapade to this town I really recommend it. It is quite nice and you have a relaxed out of the city time for you with your couple, friends or family.

Room Tip: If you like morning light entering through windows, ask if they have a room with windows looking to...

Clean rooms, friendly staff and great breakfast on the weekend. We stayed in room 21 which had a king sized bed. The room itself was nice and spacious. I find all the beds in Mexico hard and this was too. But, you overlook a pen which has a rooster and turkey which starts making noise well before sunrise. I would ask for a room away from this and I think you would find this to be a delightful stay.

We just completed a wonderful stay at this hotel. Great room, outstanding breakfast and very friendly service. I would recommend this hotel to anyone. Tapalpa is a great place to visit in Jalisco Mexico. Very nice main square and good restaurants.

Tapalpa is one of Mexico's "magic towns", an easy drive from Guadalajara, with magnificent views as the road winds up through the mountains. Hotel La Casona is extremely clean, the rooms are spacious with working fireplaces, and the breakfast offers an extensive choice of things to eat and drink. A great deal of time and care has gone into all the interesting detailing. The English-speaking owner will provide directions to an excellent restaurant in an old building just off the main plaza.

This 24 room hotel is one of the largest in the town of Tapalpa. Although one of the trip advisor key words for this hotel is "Pacific Coast" it is at least three hours inland. it is about two and a half hours southwest of Guadalajara. The hotel is in a quiet (for Mexico!) neighborhood about 6 blocks from the main plaza. I put the term quiet in parentheses because on any residential street in these small towns you may have to deal with booming car radios and barking dogs.

The hotel was made of all natural materials - lots of wood, brick and stone. The toiletries are handmade. The rooms are cheerful and there is free internet access in each room. No TVs or phones in the rooms, nor are there hair dryers. Towels were basic white. Beds were typically Mexican, i.e. hard. Plenty of hot water.

The hotel can be virtually empty during weekdays. We stayed on a Sunday and Monday night when the room rates are 30% lower than the busy weekends. We were the only ones there on Monday night. If you are there on a weekend, they serve a full breakfast buffet (included in price). On weekdays, they have a wide selection of cook to order AND a smaller buffet with coffee cake, juice fruit, and granola included. Like most other hotels and homes in Mexico, there is no central heat. It can be quite cool in the evening and early morning (even in April when we were there). They give you plenty of blankets and there is a fireplace in each of the rooms. Plenty of street parking available. They also have bicycles to loan (rent?) on site. There is a wide variety of rooms - one of the rooms that I peeked at (the Suite) had beds for 6 people - a king, two twins and two trundle beds. It also had a round dining table for 6 in the room. Those rooms are about double of a standard room.

It is a two story hotel, with only stairs to the second floor. Lots of charming Mexican decorations. They work with a tour company, which we used, called Colores de Tapalpa. You can get special rates, private guide of the area with van transport. We live about two hours away in Chapala and there was pick up and delivery door-to-door in their van with a bilingual guide. We would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask if there is going to be a gathering in the central courtyard area. If there isn't, then the...

Tapalpa is a cute little town in the mountains an we booked four rooms at this hotel. Three were in the front, with nice windows with shutters. The colors and decor were very effective, with wood trim and a fireplace with wood ready to light. The other room was on the courtyard and much less charming, but when my sister asked to change she was told that all the rooms were equal.

When we arrived there was a large group gathered in the courtyard and we were told that they were lawyers from the university. We had a nice dinner in town and then settled in. The lawyers got louder and louder and were partying directly under the courtyard room. The couple there had it the worst but the partiers were so loud they kept all of us awake. I turns out that the hotel has no staff on site at night. Finally at 3:30 am my brother in law got up and spoke to them and they finally stopped.

It was also really cold and there were no extra blankets. The breakfast was excellent (especially the apple coffeecake) and the staff were nice. They apologized and offered free rooms for the next visit but that didn't do much for my sisters who were here from the US.

We were very impressed with the small, delightful, immaculate, family-run "La Casona Hotel" in the lovely mountain town of Tapalpa, Mexico where we stayed for 4 nights. Each room was individually and artfully decorated. The rooms were arranged on 2 1/2 floors around a central courtyard with lots of potted plants and comfortable sitting areas. The wife and daughter of the owner were artists who had decorated the rooms, lobby, patios and breakfast room with tasteful original Mexican crafts. Our room had a very comfortable king-size bed, a working fireplace, a small balcony, tiles and a handmade sink in the bathroom with lots of hot water. There were original paintings on the walls and flowers in pots - truly lovely.

The breakfasts which were included in the room price were gourmet and plentiful. The owner was very helpful about suggesting possible hiking trails to explore. The town of Tapalpa had lots of good restaurants within easy walking distance and lots of original colonial buildings to admire around the central square.

The owner's wife gave us a bag of delicious homemade cookies to eat on the bus when we left. We were made to feel very welcome and would recommend this hotel and this town to any outdoor enthusiast - there is lots of hiking, biking and horseback riding easily accessible in a very scenic local.
