Tobermory Princess Hotel
Ranked #9 of 12 Hotels in Tobermory
Reviewed September 20, 2009

I would actually give this hotel 4.5 out of 5, but this option does not seem available on Tripadvisor.

We've stayed at the Princess Hotel twice, and have enjoyed our stay tremendously both times. The hotel itself is situated right at the harbour in Tobermory.

I have broken down the review by category:

Rooms: If it is within your budget, treat yourself to a harbour room view, it's such a lovely view. However, the side room that we stayed on was quite nice too. The photos that I put up are from the side room view. I believe that our side room (third floor, facing away from parking lot) had one of the nicer views, from what I could see. A previous reviewer had mentioned a rumbling sound from the rooms at the South end of the hotel. Yes, we did hear a low rumbling at times, but it didn't bother us. Another review mentioned moldy smelling carpets in the hallway. I did not notice this at all, and am usually quite affected by mold. Perhaps the problem was corrected since the review was written (?)

Proximity to Attractions: Walk out and you are at the harbour with all of the shops, boats etc.!

Staff: Super friendly! It's a family run place, and they were wonderful. Thanks Tessie!

Breakfast: Free oatmeal/toast or corn flaks, and coffee and juice. You have to pay for anything more than that.

Restaurant: for our budget, Tobermory is a bit pricey, and the same would apply to the restaurant here, though no complaints about the food.

One tiny recommendation to the hotel staff: would it be possible to have a couple of rooms set up with small fridges for those of us who are staying in Tobermory for more than a night or two? We would have happily paid a bit extra for this convenience!

Conclusion: If you are coming to Tobermory, I'd highly recommend staying at this hotel. It is clean, close to the harbour and the staff are fantastic.

We stayed 2 nights at the Princess Hotel. This hotel is old and in dire need of an update. The hallways have old musty-smelling carpets and the food leftover from room service sits in the halls almost all day before being picked up (can you say bugs?). The $140/night balcony room was clean but very outdated and overlooked a patch of weeds and a parking lot.

Worst of all was the service (or lack of) from the owner/operator. She was rude and even argued with us because I didn't like the $5.25 glass of wine. I offered to purchase a full bottle of a different wine for over $30.00 if she waived the $5.25 for the bad wine and she refused. The food in the restaurant was also horrible. Being Greek you would think that the Village Salad would be authentic but this was not the case. How hard is it to find ripe tomatoes in August.

Beware, the same people own and operate the Leeside restaurant on the other side of town and it is just as outdated and unimaginative as the Princess Hotel.

The BEST PLACE TO EAT IN TOBERMORY is the Secret Mermaid. I will definitely return for the food and the live music.

For a great breakfast and fantastic service, see the ladies at Craigies. It's right on the water, you can't miss it. Be prepared to line up if you arrive at 7:00 a.m. because the line is out the door this place is so good. You won't wait long because the service is very fast.

Generally agree with two previous posts. Big rooms, balcony, nice restaurant, good location, friendly helpful staff. Post office and government beer store across the street. View of the harbor. No fridge or microwave in rooms. My one minor complaint would be that the rooms on the south end are subject to a low rumble, probably a vent fan in the kitchen that might get on some folks nerves. It shuts off early evening and starts up again in early morning so shouldn't disturb anyone's sleep too much. The national park visitors center is incredible. I also recommend a tour of the islands and a few hours hiking on Flowerpot Island.

Our group of 14 stayed at the Princess Hotel in July 2008. We booked 8 rooms and were able to get a group rate for our two night stay.

The hotel is located right along the Little Tub Harbor. Ask for a harbor view room. Tobermory isn't a huge town, so everything is within easy walking distance. There is a beer/liquor store next to the hotel and a supermarket within easy walking distance. If you are arriving by boat, the marina is just on the other side of the harbor and the hotel is very close to the ferry and tour boat boarding area.

The hotel is owned and run by the Kritikos family. Their pride of ownership shows as the hotel is very clean and well maintained. No one in our group (and we can get pretty picky) had any problems with the hotel or the room.

The property offers a dining room with great food at resonable prices.

If you are looking for a place to stay on the Bruce, this would be a great place to stay.

It was a delight to enquire about room rates and be told the actual price including the tax, useful for us Brits. Able to see the room before we decided to book. Stayed 3 nights with continental breakfast and free parking. We had a room with a large balcony overlooking Little Tub Harbour. The room was spacious with 2 queen beds and a good bathroom. All the staff were friendly and helpful. No room kettle just the usual coffeemaker. We ate each night in the 'casual dining' hotel restaurant - the local white fish was excellent.

There is an off license over the road which is great for buying beer, but no soft drinks. The pretty village is easy to walk around and the local library has internet facilities very cheap. The Visitor Centre is also within easy walking distance which is excellent, especially the film on the Bruce and Five Fathom National Parks.

Walking in the Park was brilliant and quiet. We had no black bear sighings but other people were more lucky, if that's the right word! There is a daily small charge to enter the Park, tickets available at the Visitor Centre. The lookout tower is well worth a climb. The Bruce Walking Trail goes all the way to Queenston, just outside Niagara Falls. We only walked a few miles along the water's edge of the beautiful clear Georgian Bay.

From Tobermory the twice daily ferry departs for Manitoulin Island. we hope to do that trip next time. We went on Blue Heron boat to see the shipwrecks, lighthouses and round Garden Island to see the flowerpot rocks, which was good.

We would definately return to the hotel and the location. The drive up from Toronto was 5 hours through very pretty farming country.
