“Home away from home”
Reviewed August 24, 2009

Having stayed at the Blue Bay Motel for sometime of most of the past 30 odd years ,we do feel that it is like a home. The rooms are always clean and nicely decorated, and we have always felt welcome,by both management and staff, who can't do enough for you.
We enjoy coming so much that we hope that we can continue visiting for many more years to come.

We just returned from the Blue Bay Motel in Tobermory, and have nothing but good things to say.

We went up to Tobermory for a few days of R&R, and stayed in one of the newly renovated rooms on the second floor. It included a king bed, therapeutic tub, LCD television, and electric fireplace. The room wasn’t large, especially with the king bed in it, but it was cozy. We were concerned that there was no air conditioner as it was 30 degrees Celsius in mid-August with incredibly high humidity, but the cool air coming in from the Bay, along with the help of an overhead fan, made the room very comfortable. There is a large, six-drawer dresser and a free-standing cloak hanger, a lounge chair and ottoman, and a small table with two chairs in the corner. The room includes a coffee maker with coffee grounds, sugar, sweetener, and whitener, refreshed daily. Sure helps kick-start the morning! There is also a small bar fridge which is incredibly handy. Everything closes early in Tobermory, so stock up on pop and nibblies for those late-night munchies. (Note: If you like cheese and crackers, make sure you have a small knife with you!) The floors are wood laminate. The tub will only hold one person (unless you are very tiny) but the jets are nice and strong. There is no hair dryer or other amenities in the bathrooms, so bring your own. Kelly, the innkeeper, has a binder in each room which lists things to do in Tobermory and the menus from most of the local restaurants. I found this was the most helpful thing I’ve ever seen! Kelly is really great. She will answer the most inane questions, and has some great suggestions. You can even borrow bicycles to tour around with.

There is no elevator, and there are seven steps, a landing, and then seven more steps to the second floor. There is a long balcony/outdoor corridor in front of each room. The balcony overlooks the parking lot, but gives a great view of the Bay. You can watch the MS Chi-Cheemaun and other ferries (glass bottom boat, tours of the Bay including Flower Pot Island, sunset cruise) coming in and going out. As others have mentioned, the LCBO is right next door. Almost everything you can do in Tobermory is within walking distance of the motel. The beach is about a 5-minute drive.

As motels go, this is the best I’ve been to. I don’t usually write reviews on motels; they are motels, not 5-star resorts. But Blue Bay is worth writing about!

We stayed in Room 8 at the Blue Bay. It was a very nice, newly renovated room with Kingsize bed, Flat panel TV, fireplace and bubble jet tub. It was a little pricey but the bed was one of the most comfortable hotel beds i have slept in. The room was clean and had a recycling bin, the first time we've seen one in a hotel. The view was great, overlooking Little Tub harbour, had a great view of the Chi-Chimaun as it came to dock. As it is on Little Tub, it is well located to visit all the shops and go on the boat tours. The LCBO was right beside the hotel, which was also very nice. The Bruce Trail starts right across the street. Darker curtains on the windows would have been better, as it gets bright when you are trying to sleep in. All in all a very enjoyable experience.

Stayed just one night before moving to the Princess Hotel, more or less next door. Only paid $77.70 for room , no breakfast included. The room was spacious but all the furnishings were old and need upgrading. We had had a long journey and we took the first motel we found. We were more careful next time when checking a room. However, the shower was good and the room clean. I just did not fancy unpacking anything, not that there was much room for putting away clothes, mainly an open style wardrobe. The ceiling fan was appreciated as we were travelling in Canada in higher than average temperatures.

On the whole the motels we stayed in during our trip to Ontario were of a lesser quality than we get in Australia where a kettle, fridge and toaster are often standard in the rooms. A coffeemaker is the usual found in Canada, not so useful for us who hate coffee.

My family and I stayed at the Blue Bay Motel in Tobermory, Ontario, Canada in August 2006. I have stayed at the Blue Bay Motel twice before, in 1989 and 1997. The Blue Bay Motel is an older motel, but is kept very clean. This is a plus. We like to stay at the Blue Bay motel also because it is on the Little Tub Harbor in Tobermory, with each room having a view. Tobermory is a beautiful old fishing village that is mostly a tourist destination now with boat tours of the clear waters, shipwrecks, and Flowerpot Island. This allows us to park at the motel and walk around the harbor to the shops and restaurants. This is a plus! July and August are the most crowded months. We also stayed in June once, which was less crowded. But even with the crowds, it is a mostly peaceful area with a slightly cooler climate for the hot summer months.

On this most recent visit, we also found that they had updated the motel a little since our visit 9 years ago. They added a ceiling fan to each room, which is really nice since they do not have air conditioning. But since it is usually cooler here at night, air conditioning is not usually needed. They also have newer televisions with cable tv and wireless internet access. I did have some signal strength problems with the internet, but it usually worked. The bath tub also appeared to be updated.

Compared to other motels, there are some things missing that would be nice to have. As I mentioned, they do not have air conditioning, which I have never needed. They also lack a swimming pool, free breakfast area, room telephone, and small refrigerator/microwave oven in each room. But the thing that I prefer the most in motels and hotels is queen size beds rather than full size beds. At the Blue Bay Motel, you can only get a queen size bed in a single bed room, not in the 2 bed rooms. But for full size beds, I was actually comfortable here.

I really like the Blue Bay Motel for its cleanliness and of course, location. By the way, the owners are friendly too. Because there are only 16 rooms, making reservations is a must, especially in July and August.

I only give the Blue Bay Motel an 8 because of the missing things that I mentioned above. And also because the 2nd floor does not have an elevator, which I do not expect at a small motel, but is necessary for some people. We have also stayed at the Tobermory Princess Hotel next door. It has most of the above missing things, but no swimming pool. They even have an elevator! It costs a little more for a room there, but is also worth staying at.
