We go to Tobermory once a year for a camping trip ,it is like a mini holiday for us. We always take the day trip into Flowerpot island (it is a must see).. The Blue Heron cruises offer amazing trips out to Flowerpot Island and back, as they take you out they give you a little tour and let you really see the beauty of Tobermory. The water is crystal clear in this area ,just like carribean water so you can see right down to where the ship wrecks are, its really something to see! There is a glass bottom boat we usually go with , it has an upstairs and a down, so its kind of nice , like a double decker bus idea. the staff has always been nice and great value for your money.

The staff at Heron Cruises were nice and friendly, it took us a while though to find the office, it was located along the docks, behind the Crowsnest Pub (they should put that on their brochures). The tour itself was quite uninspiring, perhaps the winds were just too cold for us to enjoy it much. We headed out straight to the shipwrecks and it was quite interesting to see the faint outlines of the vessels lying below the waters. But the best views were from the top of the boat, the views from the glass bottom itself was quite the joke, too small to see anything. From there, the tour headed over to the islands but if you have done a boat tour (we did the 1000 island tour) then this was pretty standard stuff. One of the staff was quite friendly and shared a lot of information about the islands which was nice. It was quite pricey ($28 per adult). All in all, I would give it the skip and enjoy the views of the Bay from the hiking trails like the Grotto or the Devil's Monument Loop!

We took the tour option that allows for a stay on the island. The boat takes a long route out which boasts two shipwrecks (side by side in the same area), views of local wildlife along the lake, and some interesting tidbits of the history of the area as well as the geological formations "flower pots" along the coast. I will say that I did envision the "glass bottom" to be larger (as on similar tours I have taken in the Florida Keys) but on our boat there were only two rectangular viewing areas with the glass bottom. I found myself getting a bit seasick while staring down the narrow viewing area. This didn't ruin the experience though as the lake water is so clear it is actually easier to view the wrecks from the upper deck. It gets cold out on the lake so dress accordingly, the staff did provide blankets for the passengers which several people (myself included) took advantage of.
We were also impressed that the staff easily accommodated our request for an earlier return time as we found we easily covered the entire loop trail on the island in 2 hours thus we left on the 2:30 boat instead of the 4:30 ride we had actually booked (this may not be as available during busier times).

We took the tour that included a trip out to see the shipwrecks and a drop off at Flowerpot Island. The trip out probably took about 30-40 mins and the trip back about 20-30 min. The shipwrecks were great and our kids were super excited to see real sunken ships! As we left the harbor, we got a wonderful view of everything from the water, including Big Tub. They take you by the Hole In The Wall 'arch' and then finally circles Flowerpot before you transfer to a speedboat that shuttles you over to the island itself.

The glass bottom was not as I expected in that it is just 6 small squares in an area of about 3'x3' that you can peer into. Also the sound system on the boat is terrible, so unless you are sitting right by a speaker, you pretty much miss anything of what the captain is narrating. However, they did have another guide on board that was knowledgeble and could fill in the blanks for us. The boats themselves were very clean and well maintained otherwise. They even provide nice, heavy blankets for those who may need it - and at least in early May, we needed it on the upper deck as the boat got going.

The price is a bit expensive, but the experience was worth it and I would definitely recommend it.
