“Just Perfect”
Reviewed May 28, 2011

We are a well travelled couple in our late 40’s and this holiday was a special treat to each other for our 25th wedding anniversary.

Any holiday is what you make of it, and this one for us was just perfect…

We do agree with so many of the positive comments previously made and also some of the negative comments about the island on trip advisor, but we think that you need to put things into perspective. This island is about as close to a desert island as most of us will ever get, and because of this you get all the benefits of solitude, peace and quiet, and a natural feel. However, some negatives for some people of “Little friends” in the rooms, unmade up paths, faded décor in places would not be so appealing.

The trip is a long one, but its part of the adventure, very exciting, almost 24 hours door to door for us.

Much has been said about the beach. Its not very wide in places, but it runs almost all of the way around the island. The beach does have corral on it, but to be honest its not a big problem. The sea is rough in places and if the corral or the sea is a problem for you we suggest that you go to the service jetty and swim in the small harbour; this also has a very nice stretch of soft sand; we made a big sand castle!!! (Also, don’t forget your sea shoes; we purchased some in the UK for £10.)

The weather was very nice for the week we stayed, lots of sun.

The food was very nice, no complains.

The dive centre is very professional.

The spa is very nice.

The pool area is exceedingly nice indeed.

The shop, well its pointless, empty, never open. But we did not go to this island for the shopping…

The entertainment, almost non existent. But again we did not come to this island for night clubs or shows, that is what Las Vegas is for.

The room, quite stunning, and the bathroom is amazing; we had a duplex beach villa, but we understand that all of the rooms are brilliant.

With regard to expenditure, you could arrive with £20 and go home with £20 if you want to. Its just the obvious things that you have to pay for like the premium spirits in you room or special meals and trips.

So to sum up. This is the perfect island get away for couples who want to be in each others company, have nice food, good drink, chat with other gests and staff, dream the days away with a book or playing cards, sitting in the sun and swimming of course…

We do not recommend this island to holiday makers with children, or if you are looking for a lively time, this place is going to be far to tranquil for you, in our opinion…

However, in saying all of the above you have to make your own mind up and go see for your self; we loved it! So a big thank you to all on the island, we had such a wonderful time and the memories will stay with us both forever.

O yes, almost forgot, you must go to the sand bank, it’s a free trip and quite spectacular…

Room Tip: Ask for a room with nice sand ouside

Fantastic! Where do I start, the new management bend over backwards to do anything and everything to make your stay perfect. I cant praise them enough. From the moment we arrived to the moment they waved us goodbye from the main jetty they were friendly, professional, fast and attentive. The food was incredible, from curry to roast beef, nothing was too much trouble, even the hotel manager took time to personally escort us to a nearby island. The service was incredible, the staff were helpful, the dive center gang were excellent, the decor in the water villas was light and airy, clean and modern, we saw reports saying the island and villas were tired but this is a grave exaggeration yes there were some minuscule things a weathered window a crack in a wall but these are all things the management are fixing. As for the island itself, it has fabulous snorkelling all the way round, 40+ dive sites within an hours radius. This island is perfect for those people who want to get away from "holiday makers" it is secluded and tranquil, if you want peace and quite, snorkelling with turtles and rays, diving the coral reefs with a pod of dolphins, sunbathing and relaxing then look no further this is the island retreat for you.

After reading some of the negative reviews about Alidhoo we were a little sceptical about our holiday (and we got a good deal so started to think there was a reason why it was cheap!) but we knew that as long as there was sun, sea and sand, with free booze and food thrown in we would no doubt have a good time!

We flew direct from Heathrow (Sri Lankan) and landed about 12.30pm only to be told the domestic flight (sadly not a sea plane) wasn't until 5pm which meant a big fat wait for us. However they took us to the VIP Lounge where it was air-conditioned, with internet, food and drink to help yourself to, and magazines and a movie channel, so at least they were looking after us. The island is about a 40min flight and then 20 minute speedboat from Male. We got to the island just as it was getting dark so didn't have chance to see much immediately but the service was amazing from the moment we got there.

We were in a duplex ocean villa and the first one they put us in had a fuse that kept tripping out so they immediately transferred us to another which was no hassle as we hadn't even unpacked. The villas are absolutely amazing, as big as a small house plus you get a huge downstairs balcony with sunloungers and hot tub (which we filled with cold water just to cool down every so often as it was so hot on the balcony!). There is an outside shower area with 2 sinks and 3 showers (slightly excessive!) but nice to unwind after a tough day in the sun! from our balcony we saw dolphins swimming past and loads of fish in the sea below. The villas were noisy at night. I sleep with earplugs anyway but could still hear the waves smashing against the stilts but the sea calmed down after the first few nights and was a lot quieter. It's quite a soothing sound too!

The sea's quite rough around the villas so sadly you can't jump in from the balcony. But snorkelling around other parts of the island is amazing - we saw loads of huge fish, a Moray eel and a turtle just metres from the shore. It's a bit tricky to get into the sea as the waves lap at the shore quite strongly but you can climb down a ladder off the main pier.

The pool area is lovely, and the service at the bar impeccable (they all know you and remember what you have to drink) but they don't come round often at the pool area so you have to go up to the bar. Some reviews mention bad entertainment - we didn't have high expectations anyway but there's nothing wrong with it, a husband and wife singing well known songs but not too loud that you couldn't chat over the noise.

The food is also amazing. Buffet food is never 100% perfect but this was near enough - loads to choose from and freshly made curries etc. Lots of fresh fish too.

We went to the sandbank twice and while it is lovely to visit a proper desert island with gorgeous soft sand and gently lapping water, it is a 45 minute journey (slow boat and rough seas at times) so you never get that long there before you come back, also they put the umbrellas up quite close to other people so you feel a bit on top of everyone! However it is beautiful and well worth the trip.

All-in-all I would definitely recommend this island. Ignore any bad reviews about it being in a poor state of repair - yes the varnish is slightly peeling off the wood planks etc but I wouldn't have even noticed had I not read it, and besides it makes it more rustic! I think some people expect perfection and are too willing to complain - we overhead someone complaining that there were too many rocks and coral around the island and they should be moved! Well then there wouldn't be as much sealife to see when snorkelling would there!

A fantastic holiday and second honeymoon for me and my husband. This place is paradise.

Two weeks returned the 30th March 2011. First the bad bits: no lagoon means beach does not surround the island so take pool shoes. Resort needs coat of paint and a bit of money spending on it. Chinese men wear shiny silver pyjamas all day. Interior decorator stuck in the 80's. After that this is a fantastic resort. The staff are to a man brilliant, nothing is too much trouble. Food varied and all fresh, be prepared to put on weight. Go all inclusive the free brands include Gordons, Bombay, Johnnie Walker and Smirnoff and the like. No cheap local stuff. Free trips daily to sandbank and snorkelling very good. Once went to OZ and visited the Great Barrier Reef ... saw a more varied sealife off the jetty at Alidhoo!!! Again the staff made my holiday, all happy and innocent, not a whiff of commercialisation; they all genuinely wanted to make sure you had a good time, very proud of their country and their links with the British Isles. Everybody speaks English. Weather perfect, the sea and beaches pristine. Embarrassed to have idiots who probably have never been abroad before complaining about bugs, beetles, geckos and the odd grass snake. Your in the tropics, they live here. Rub on your cream and get on with your holiday.
Very good value for money, there are better resorts in the Maldives but it will cost you another grand each. Very happy to recommend this resort to sensible people. Enjoy.

We had a fabulous break at the J Resort, Alidhoo (formerly Cinnamon Island, Alidhoo) over Christmas and New Year 2010. Neither myself nor my husband had been to the Maldives previously and were attracted by the average temperatures there in December (particularly when the weather at home was atrocious).
With so many islands we really didn't know which one to choose but were really happy with J Resort, Alidhoo. The island itself is quite small but despite this my only disappointment was that there is no lagoon, something we should have looked into ourselves before booking. With no lagoon to protect it, the beach was being eroded and moved around the island, something which was evident even in the two weeks we were there. However, free daily trips to a local sandbank were laid on for all guests. Once there you could not only sunbathe on an uninhabited stretch of sand, but could swim or snorkel in the lagoon. We saw lots of fish and even shared the water with a baby shark briefly!
The accommodation on Alidhoo was a little tired looking in places, but we were advised the resort had just been taken over by new owners and by the end of our stay maintenance around the island and renewal of furniture was well underway.
We booked a fully inclusive holiday and were delighted with the standard and choice of food available. We are both quite fussy eaters but still found lots of choice at each meal. My only negative comment would be that the times for breakfast (between 7:30 and 9:30) was a little early when we were all on holiday. But the standard and variety of food was amazing. In fact between main meals and the snacks available at the bar, along with doing very little for two weeks, I'm surprised we didn't come home much bigger than we did!
The resort was obviously geared towards diving, but unfortunately I was unable to take part after developing an ear infection. My husband did his first ever dive towards the end of our stay, and was so enthusiastic about it we are planning a return trip so he can go diving in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean again and i can try it out. Diving off the coast of Britain just doesn't hold the same attraction for me for some reason!!
As you have read we had an incredible holiday. The thing that makes this holiday stand out for me though was the people. The staff were all so friendly and seemed genuinely happy to help. We've been to many places over the years and have to say the hospitality shown to us in the Maldives was second to none! Nothing seemed to be too much trouble, day or night and any small issues we did have (such as not being able to get the jacuzzi bath to work) were dealt with very quickly once reported.
A special mention has to be made of the two doctors on the island. I ended up with a fairly serious ear infection due to not drying my ears properly after swimming. I was relieved to find out there was a doctor on the Island, but a little apprehensive having never had to consult a doctor whilst abroad. However, the treatment they provided was second to none and nothing was too much trouble. Despite being on call 24/7 and being kept pretty busy by both staff and guests, both doctors were always friendly, taking the time to put me at ease and ensure i was happy with all that was going on. One of them even escorted me to a hospital on a nearby island when i needed to see the ENT specialist! I would happily be treated again by either doctor again, although i do hope this will not be necessary!
All in all we had a fantastic holiday and whilst we may or may not return to Aildhoo, we will definitely return to the Maldives.

Room Tip: Fab place, great food, hospitality second to none!

My partner and I have just returned from an 11 night stay at J Resort (formally Cinnamon Island, Alidhoo). Due to an administrational error on the part of First Choice, we were placed here instead of the hotel we had originally booked, so had no prior knowledge or expectations of the resort.

We were pleasantly surprised upon arrival - the staff were friendly and our duplex apartment was fantastic - situated on stilts in the water. The daily excursions were very welcome as there could be a tendency to feel slight cabin fever if you were unable to leave the island for a week or so. Sand banks is a brilliant free daily trip - perfect white beach and calm turquoise sea. We took this trip a few times and during the boat ride there saw dolphins each time (no need to book the $40 dolphin watching excursion as we did - bit of a rip off). The spa is definitely worth a visit too - a real oasis in the centre of the resort. Snorkelling is also particularly good on the house reef - free equipment hire via the dive centre which seemed extremely professional. We took a snorkel trip which was the highlight of the holiday for us, and saw 6 huge manta rays, a turtle, moray eels, loads of beautiful tropical fish and even a shark. Pool is a slightly strange colour, but well situated and rarely overly busy.

Onto the cons... The resort is very noisy. If you want a quiet, relaxing holiday, this isn't the place for you. Bliss bar insists on playing music until after midnight 7 days a week. The volume is incredible - there really is no need for it to be that loud - and when asked to be turned down the reply is, 'Other guests enjoy it'. That certainly wasn't our experience as nearly everyone we spoke to felt the same as us and had to shout to talk - it felt like being in a bizarre mid-nineties night club. The DJ plays dated tracks which only one or two members of staff sporadically dance too - the dance floor is otherwise dead. This really was a let down for us as our duplex was fairly near to the bar, and shook every night with the bass from the bar (as well as the waves). We felt like our options were either to drink in the bar and shout to talk, or stay in our room and listen to the music from the bar. Really, really disappointing and extremely frustrating at times. This is definitely the main con for us.

Smaller niggles - The restaurant generally offered a varied selection of food each day on a weekly cycle, and the chefs work extremely hard. We arrived on 'British' night and were offered roast beef and yorkshire pudding which wasn't really what we expected from an island so close to India and Sri Lanka. Salads were always relatively good and the lunchtime curries also lovely, but we were at a bit of a loss in the evenings at times. Vegetarian mains practically non existent unless you want pasta every night.
It seemed to be a bit hit and miss as to whether your mini bar would be refilled, which also got a little annoying as from the point of calling reception to getting the drinks could sometimes take an hour.
On the whole though, this is a good resort with good facilities and the location is great...The noise just put a real dampener on it for us and meant it wasn't the relaxing holiday we had hoped for.
