Chalet St Martin
Reviewed April 9, 2013

The chalet itself is simply beautiful with smart modern décor and a warm atmosphere, we felt at home there and able to relax whether in the privacy of our comfortable room, in the library, on the sofa in front of the fire or round the table for Emma’s homemade cakes.

The small village of St Martin is a short walk away with good local shops and a couple of family friendly bars where we spent one or two evenings before dinner listening to live music and swapping stories.

Emma and Griff are great hosts, nothing was too much trouble for them and they made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. They had advice for the experienced skiers in our party on the best snow and conditions and they helped the novices get the most from the trip making sure that they rented the right skis and advising them on where to find the slopes most suited to their level.

The food was incredible, Emma is a great cook and the menu and presentation would put all but the best restaurants to shame, our hosts dined with us, kept us entertained with great conversation and filled our glasses with limitless excellent wine that had clearly been carefully selected to complement the food.

Even on their night off they drove us to a fabulous authentic Savoyard farm restaurant in the next village run by the friendly farmer Bernard and arranged for Bernard’s wife Josette to transport us back at the end of the evening.

I can’t praise Chalet St Martin highly enough, we have booked for the same week next year already and we are counting down the days.

We have stayed in several catered ski chalets with a mixture of styles and ethos, and this is by far the best on every front. The big distinguishing feature here is that this is Emma and Griff's own home, built by them, and you are treated like an old friend who has come to stay rather than a paying guest. Other reviews have praised the food and wine and I can only agree with them. Your hosts have incredibly high standards but the atmosphere in the chalet is very, very relaxed - it's perfectly ok if you're in your PJs at breakfast!
The Three Valleys is a fantastic ski area for all levels and St Martin de Belleville would always be my preferred place to stay. Griff and Emma will point you in the right direction to suit your ability and will often ski with you themselves so you can relax and have fun without worrying about getting into difficulty. Plus your skiing will inevitably improve. 'Proper' off-piste needs expert local knowledge: Griff took my husband (a very experienced skier himself) down a route which he would never have attempted solo and he was on an adrenalin high for days afterwards. As others have said, nothing is too much trouble and it is all done with great energy and humour.
If you are a passionate skier you will find kindred spirits at Chalet St Martin!

Room Tip: The bedrooms are all very comfortable and Emma will advise you on which would suit you best. The bu...

Chalet St Martin is the best chalet I have stayed in. Emma and Griff are perfect hosts, for whom nothing seemed too much trouble. The chalet is situated a shortish walk to the nearest piste, and Griff and Emma are happy to suggest areas to ski each day and good value places to eat.

By far the best place to eat though is the chalet itself. There are even two types of porridge available at breakfast, along with croissants hot from the oven and a full cooked start to the day, if that is what you need. Emma is a marvellous cook who produces meals which are wonderfully presented and which taste superb. Griff’s selection of wines to go with them is as astute as it is generous. The home made cake every afternoon, the soppy dogs, and the friendly atmosphere every evening were extra pleasures when we stopped ski-ing for the day.

The room – the whole place – is comfortable, relaxed, homely, mainly because it is Griff’s and Emma’s family home. They care about their chalet and they care about you and your holiday.

Room Tip: Go in front door and take what you're given; it'll be fine!.

Griff and Emma, our hosts, have thought of everything for the perfect holiday. The very comfortable chalet, the extremely high standard of food and accompanying wines and the excellent skiing made for a wonderful holiday. What could be better than coming back after a day on the slopes to drinks and nibbles by a lovely log burner followed by stunning food. Heaven!

We had such a fantastic stay here.. Beautiful chalet and our hosts, Emma and Griff were so lovely.. Nothing was too much trouble. The food was scrumptious - choice of cooked breakfast with fresh bread, croissants, yogurts and cereals; homemade cake each afternoon and a delicious 4 course meal each evening with carefully selected wines. The chalet itself was very welcoming with a relaxed atmosphere. It had everything we needed and more. The ski area is perfect for all standards and the first lift is a short walk away. Après ski is a very short walk from the end of the piste - we were recommended to go to the Piano Bar which always gave us a warm welcome and Griff came to collect our skis and boots each day, leaving us with our walking boots to stroll back to the chalet after a couple of vin chauds - we were very well looked after! Griff is also a qualified ski instructor and both he and Emma kindly gave me some very helpful tips to improve my technique (which is a bit lacking!). The one evening when we went out to dine was also special, Griff drove us to another local village to a farm restaurant which used their own produce, fantastic value, atmosphere and food and the owner kindly drove us back to St Martin afterwards! We cannot recommend this chalet highly enough and will most definitely return next year - cannot wait! Thank you!
Incidentally, we (my partner and I) bumped into our friends at our local airport and would you believe it, (we couldn't!) they had also booked this chalet at the same time, so it was even more fun to share this amazing week with lovely friends! :D

My wife and I stayed here in January this year and had a great time. Griff and Emma provide stunning service and gourmet food, even with all the skiing I still managed to put weight on during our three day visit, and it is all the little touches that make the Chalet so warm and welcoming, I particularly liked the boot warmer. The rooms are well appointed and the lounge with its log fire is ideal for chilling after a day on the slopes.
The chalet is a very short walk to the slopes and then full access is possible for the 3 vallees area.
The nicest touch after a hard days skiing in new boots was to find that our walking boots had been delivered to our favourite watering hole and the skiis and boots etc had been transported back to the Chalet, Thats service. Many thanks to Griff, Emma, Rosie and Lily. We will be back
